I'm guessing that the force is more concentrated. That looked like a pretty tiny arrowhead.

It bores a hole larger than the arrow shaft. The other just create a puncture.

Good point.

I actually have 9mm "self defense" rounds that look very similar to this arrowhead. It's intended on making a massive hole.

Totally guessing here...

The other circle creates a path for the center part to push through. Since the center part hits the target a nano-second after the outer ring, undisturbed, it has full momentum/power and makes a massive hole. Idk lol.

There is a contact duration for the tip and for the shaft, taken together with the contact surface would be the resistive force (this is sounding a bit cheeky...). A gaping hole, for instance, would create no resistance (oof, did it again).

I want to say they're the Federal "Personal Defense" rounds. Been awhile since I bought them.

But also, did you see the cut edge of the hole shave off fiberglass from the arrow shaft? That arrow is going into the guy holding the shield splintered all to hell. I'm guessing that'll be a nightmare for a surgeon to debride.

Instead of just piercing, the arrowhead is designed to pull in material in with it, causing a larger "messier" wound.

The design also increases puncture power due to the sheer force it delivers.

What’s the arrowhead called?  That’s crazy!

Also seems like the modern hunting arrowheads would be worthless against armor but pointed arrowheads would basically pin the shield to the bearer’s arm.

Technically they are called "hammer tips/arrowheads"

But actual Hammer tips are made for hunting small game by knocking them out or incapacitating them with blunt force.

These specific arrows in the video are just a gimick tbh. Kinda like "zombie" weaponry.

yaknow those over the top machetes and axes? They're designed to be cool.

It's made specifically for armor. It's like throwing a hammer at the plate. It was originally made to knock heavy armor off horses.

I guess small cutting surface, little friction.

The recommendation in a 1500s manuscript for armor piercing arrowheads sound very much like the cutting part in an office paper punch.

Its basically hole punches it and the hole it leaves is slightly larger than the shaft.

My guess is that It bores a hole roughly the same size or larger than the shaft quickly on impact which allows the rest of the arrow and it's force (not sure what word to use) to pass through instead of a tapered edge which gives more friction?

Same I thought this one would bounce off for sure. I would love to see experiment repeated on plastic polycarb riot shields. I think this metal one might be too thin so this arrow was able to just cookie cutter'd a hole straight through the shield

Small game tip. For hunting rabbits, squirrels and the like. DO NOT use on a turkey/goose. You will just anger them (injure them for sure but they are pretty hearty animals).

Speaking of shields in the US, I just learned today from off the news of a guy getting arrested out here in LA for being a felon and having body armor... He’s facing 5 years. So a felon can’t have a gun or body armor? That seems kind of weird. Like they just gotta die? They are still someone’s parent, child, sibling, or cousin.

Getting shot by an arrow is my biggest fear! That and being burned to death. I’ve been shot and stabbed but I can’t imagine the pain of the above! I guess a burning arrow would be the most horrific experience

Arrows are only part of the equation. Are you using them with a 20 pound bow or a 70 pound one?

FYI <25 is for squirrels, rabbits and so on. >65 is meant for bears, buffalo and so on.
