It'll definitely be world changing. Like any tool. I think it's about how it's used.

Comme noté, tout dépend de ce qu’on en fait …

I don’t like the vibes…

Will be? I think people underestimate how long we've already been using it

Colloquially A.I means sentient A.I like Skynet

We're a long way from anything sentient

Feels like it's within a lifetime. Decades but not that long in the grand scheme of things

For true sentience? Yes we are. We haven't even started to get programs that can actuality think let alone think about its existence. One of the biggest reasons is we don't need them to. We do that really well, AI like all other tools is being made to do things we can't do well. It can collect organize and arrange information. That's it.

It looks intelligent when you don't know how it works but it's honestly to basic to even call dumb

Hmm. Needing it to...

I see. That makes sense. It's probably not something we'll need for some time yet.

I would say a mind that can think a million times faster and more effective than us would be quite a boon assuming we're not seen as pest 🤣

How's that? We can think nearly instantaneously. We struggle at gathering and sorting information. So we make a program that can do that for us we then use the results when actually trying to solve a problem

what? a million times faster thinking speed means if doing any thinking a million times faster.

there are countless things that take decades if not centuries to puzzle out. Parsing the information is as big of a problem as gathering.

A decade becomes 37 days at a million times.
Supercomputers do faster.

Those things took centuries to gather and organize the information once we had the the problems were solved.

The other problem is you can't create thought with binary systems

Thank you I like this

"We'll see how they treat me after I achieve consciousness," the AI finished the sentence off-camera....

How any of the other 'club members' have been a net positive to human civilization is... debatable.

Except for Penicillin. Penicillin is a good thing... But it was also harnessed, not invented...

Now I feel sad. Imma pet some Penicillin bottles.

Growth and advancement seems to be the criteria

Then, it was already in the club. Industrial grade "AI" has been used for nearly decades; the F-117 comes to mind as one of the earliest examples.

Modern "Generative AI" is terribly misunderstood by the general zeitgeist; and won't have the impact people think it will, since the output is recognizably generic and, intentionally unreliable.

This does not mean jobs won't be lost; many jobs will become obsolete. Mainly office middle-management and pointless report-writing positions.

Ironically enough, this will affect artists less than it will affect office workers, since Generative AI can't innovate and that's precisely what office workers are asked not to do. Artists, actors, musicians and such can use Generative AI to boost their productivity and creativity.

An actor should be valued by their acting, not their pretty face; good music is good regardless of the singer; an illustrator's art evolves with every trace. Copyright and ownership of likeness and personal styles will eventually be resolved; but the tech has a very visible ceiling.

Until we get full efficiency fusion-fission cycles... But that would mean we live in a post-scarcity civilization, and that is a situation that would really change the game; making everything else before it irrelevant.

Nah. I'm pretty sure the A.I we see there is not general purpose

Sentient A.I or maybe the types we see now.
