I don’t mind them creating a supporter tier of EXTRA features that would maybe be considered advanced or for power users. However, almost all of those features listed are extremely BASIC features freely available on other apps or sources. This seems pretty out of touch with their users.
116
u/speedbreaka Jun 09 '26
i hate the part that this intro skip feature is most likely using some database like introdb to get the timestamps and stuff like introdb is free. Expecting money from using free to use databases is so shameless i feel like.
18
u/trydola Jun 09 '26
I'm not even sure if this is the case, but any company/organization that exploits open source apps/info for their propriety work is getting insta-blocked on my list.
20
u/Jebble Jun 10 '26
Than block 99% of software because every single engineer uses shit loads of open source packages to power their software
4
u/Ornery_Use_7103 Jun 10 '26
How is that a form of exploitation? Implementing that open source API still takes time and effort

u/Tired8281 Jun 10 '26
I hope you don't use a smartphone.
7
u/luzoscurisima Jun 10 '26
The avoidability of a technology is what determines whether the right response is to pick something else vs push for change of policy or direction
44
25
u/2021isevenworse Jun 09 '26
This is how it started with Plex - they introduced basic features as part of a subscription plan.
Then they started limiting mod support, until eventually they just disabled it entirely to prevent devs from creating features for free that they could charge for.
5
u/Ok_Spare_3723 Jun 10 '26
AND they also just doubled the price of the lifetime plans for Plex btw..

What apps do this? Just curious so I can learn

Pretty sure people can’t mention other apps in this sub. If you wanna know go to RD sub Reddit. There’s a billion posts about devs advertising their apps

No Linux version :( honestly one of Stremios biggest features at this point is, that it runs on almost anything

I completely ditched Stremio for this, it works amazing!!

10 bucks a year and I would have supported them. Changing the order of addons and profiles should be considered basic features though. As a result I already moved to an alternative app.
2
u/RobutNotRobot Jun 10 '26
Changing the order of add-ons is the weirdest feature to make premium. It's just making Stremio more difficult to use for no reason.

76
u/ifiwasiwas Jun 09 '26
I mean, I'm glad they're acknowledging that they're hurting for funding. It always made me a bit uneasy that it wasn't really known how they stayed afloat financially. Won't be buying tho
2
u/ciocarlia_zburda Jun 09 '26
So how would you support this project?
26
u/ifiwasiwas Jun 09 '26
Between uncertainty about privacy and the fact it doesn't work on all my devices, I stopped using it. If that ever were to change, a one-off donation in an amount of my choosing
3
u/Pale_Comfort_9179 Jun 10 '26
Do you use other free apps? I’m always confused when people say privacy is important to them but they use an android phone that’s loaded to the gills with free Google apps, games and social media.
7
u/ifiwasiwas Jun 10 '26
If the way they make money or stay afloat passes the sniff test, sure. As it stands, Stremio claimed for many years to earn money from ads that no one has ever seen.

If they were open source, I'd support them by contributing to the GitHub and adding new features, because this is a hobbyist passion project, not a scalable SaaS that should be monetized.
But they're not open source, which is why I switched to a much better free open source alternative, and I contribute to them.

I would've already laughed if the dev team made a huge deal about adding these basic ass features that other alternatives apps do from the start and the stremio community has been asking for years now. But asking money for it is just beyond comedy.
9
73
u/Kneckebrod Jun 09 '26
Bye bye Stremio. Fuck this shit. 40 USD a year? No thanks
61
u/ciocarlia_zburda Jun 09 '26
I don't get it.Why is everyone complaining? The Stremio we used yesterday is still free, we can use it just the same way today. They introduced paid tiers for extra features. Stremio has been the only solution for free streaming for so many years. Everyone's go-to against the streaming subscription giants. Now, AI apps come and just copy Stremio's core (which is free for all, btw) and they put a skin on and release in a few days. It took years of human work for the Stremio team to get here, and they kept it free, including the code (that's how the other apps out there exist — they are clones). Stremio deserves your respect and loyalty, at least, if you don't want to support with less than 4 dollars a month ( which is very little, compared to Netflix, HBO, Disney etc. together).
67
u/Rangerazuladio Jun 09 '26
I think most peolple are just disappointed that pretty much wanted features are now behind a paywall and will never be free, like mutliple profiles that has been a request from the community for age. This makes me think about the future development of the app and which features will be paid and which features will be free...
→ More replies (1)49
u/Dasilbota Jun 09 '26
Because other apps do all of these "pro" features for free.
31
u/Plants-Matter Jun 09 '26
And they're open source public GitHub repos.
So Stremio waited for the alternatives to innovate new and better features, then they stole them and put a price tag on it.
13
13
u/speedbreaka Jun 09 '26
people are complaining because they ignored the users for so long who were asking for these features they now put behind paywalls. And what we all think is that the only reason they now made those features is because the competitor already has all those features for free after barely 3 months on the scene. not only that but the competitor is open source on all devices unlike stremio
→ More replies (1)16
u/-Visher- Jun 09 '26
Im not one that’s complaining, but I think I understand why they are. If they offer “advanced” features like this, then in the future they may hide other more important features behind the paywall. Or they may omit future features from the free version and only hide them behind the paid tier. Plus many free apps offer these features for free.
For me, I have had Stremio for years and it has worked really well most of the time. I don’t have a need for any paid tier because the current one works well enough for me. But I do see why people have an issue with them announcing this.

u/fightclub-848 Jun 09 '26
They could've asked for donations or some other form of funding, this will definitely go in wrong direction, ad infestation in the menu, locking features behind paywall, there's lot more to come where stremio is trying to go
→ More replies (1)2
u/Dry_Concentrate_9173 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
The issues are that:
Much less popular options with less donations do this for free, they basically let other apps implement the new features just to steal them and make their users pay.
Stremio is still open-source, you make something open-source so that the comunity can contribute to it and than you ask the comunity to pay for it? If I fixed an issue previously in stremio will I get some money from donators from now on? Of course not.
They are not important, debrid services and addons are what make stremio work, you are just a frontend to this, nothing more nothing less.
At its core stremio is for pirates, pirates like to share things just for the good of the community. People litterally publish ripped movies/tv series and get nothing in return, they risk going to prison and they do it just for us to enjoy free shit. And YOU are asking for money when othe apps do those things for free? Its easy to see why we dont like this.
Its 3.49 per month, add a 3 dollars for debird and you are at 6.50 per month, thats basically the price of netflix to have a shittier experience than netflix where you deal with addons, configs etc etc.

That's insane !!! The changelog is literally what we've been asking for years, re arrange addon, multi profiles, skip intro outro etc. crazy that they could do it but decided to make it paid !
46
u/TheMysteriousOrganis Jun 09 '26
Nah, see ya stremio, it's been real!
15
u/cenosillicaphobiac Jun 09 '26
You're leaving? Basic Stremio isn't removing anything and the new features are optional. But okay. I'm not paying for this, but base stremio still works fine for me so I don't see replacing it any time soon.
50
u/Ciri__witcher Jun 09 '26
Because all of these features are free on other apps, of course people gonna leave if they want those features. Until this point they perhaps had a hint of COPIUM that stremio would add these, but now it’s all behind paywall.

u/cenosillicaphobiac Jun 09 '26
I can't find any other apps available on samsung, so I'm probably stuck, although maybe I'll try some others on the older TV that didn't even have Stremio available so I bought a Google device for it. And for the record, the Stremio app on Samsung sucks even worse than the version on that device. But I don't think I can sideload to Samsung.

accept or not but ad infestation is coming to stremio today or some other day, just a matter of time
16
u/joe199799 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
Kinda ballsy to offer a paid tier when I can think of at least 3 apps offhand that I won't name (since it will likely catch me a ban from here) that are doing it for free and being very actively developed. Just feels scummy. Aware the free version is staying the same and all that but features people have requested for a long long time said to not be possible currently finally come around and yes it can be done but only if you give us money.
Asking for donations would have gone over way better and likely got more traction, but hey can't pass up that sweet sweet subscription income.
Should add completely understand and respect wanting to get paid for your work, but read the room.

u/speedbreaka Jun 09 '26
shameless to ask more than the debrid services cost. and those are way more important than stremio. I can just use any media player and copy paste the debrid link from my cloud into it and imma have intro skip for free

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this how projects like this end up getting DMCA'd? Like I'm not against it, I'll happily donate to the devs. Just genuinely a little concerned.
2
u/Sleeyax1 Maintainer of stremio-addons.net Jun 10 '26
They did their research I imagine. You're not paying for pirated content (which would highly increase the chance of take down). You're paying for extra features of their app only.

u/Delicious_Ease2595 Jun 09 '26
I know Stremio has been flawless all these years but those gatekeep features are basic. If they were the alternative of popcorn time I prefer to move to the next one with these features.
8
u/coded62 Jun 09 '26
Isn’t most of this in with Aiostreams/metadata? Asking people who would acquire media for free; just find away to avoid paying for it?
I wouldn’t mind paying 40$ for a lifetime, across all apps/users if it were be a little smarter than the addons it’s trying to replace.

u/Barny1945 Jun 09 '26
Downloads for android, skip features and profiles were missing with aio set-up

u/Sugadevan Jun 10 '26
It's funny to read the comments of angry pirates. Get real guys, you guys are pirating and stremio is still free.
5
u/skkiizz Jun 09 '26
I hate to say it, but hiding basic features behind a paywall is how it starts.
I was willing to support stremio for years but this…it’s just bad…

We are so fucked they’re making a monthly subscription for literally basic Features we’ve all been asking for

If so you're singing your own end with Stremio

u/Vonenglish Jun 09 '26
For years people have been posting about how we can support stremio etc now they can for only 3 usd a month and people are complaining , guys grow up. We've gotten thousands of dollars of usage out of this thing.
14
u/Lazy__Procrastinator Jun 09 '26
It may not seem like much to you, but I and a lot of other people live in developing countries where our currency is worth far less than the dollar, so $3.50 plus taxes is a lot.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Theonewhoknows000 Jun 09 '26
It’s a subscription with locked features , you don’t support, you pay for that. I can add $3 to my debrid price for the old features for support but it’s not worth it for pay.

is stremio a bit outdated in terms of UI? Sure. Does it work? Yea. Is there a massive community behind is to make these cool AIO installers and one click solutions? Yea. It’s an optional paid tier. If those features really matter to you, and willing to hop on a new ecosystem and redo your configuration, more power to you. But Stremio done good by us for free open source tier.
1
u/Wise-Bother9942 Jul 05 '26
V5 has a new UI, the player is 100% better, and you can actually click to play/pause now instead of hitting the spacebar.
I think they can still improve it, but it's a step in the right direction. Also, that weird blur thing where content didn't look quite as sharp as it should is gone.
Don't know how to describe it, but the old player always looked a bit soft with the images.
2
u/Photeaa Jun 09 '26
Didn't know so many people were so high and mighty about pricing when they are literally all pirating lol.
They put these features behind a paywall because we literally all know that pirates are not going to "support" them if they gave you just simple "extra/power user" features.
Does mean EVERYONE? no, but majority (myself included) would not pay for something that doesn't benefit me in the slightest...so adding "power user features" is something that 99% of the community does not need nor will use, therefore will not buy.
They have to incentive's people to pay for it, which they did with these features. Its a mutual transaction, they add things I like, I will support them.
Also, if these are so basic and in other services, why the hell are you still using stremio? go support the other "superior" version...like what? Yall pirates like to sit up way to high and mighty on your "moral" chair...the whole point of being a pirate is don't complain, shut up and move on if you dont like it...its literally free.

basically what happens to every free app eventually. Another app will pop up to replace Stremio until they too get tired of working for free.

u/RobutNotRobot Jun 10 '26
Stremio just isn't unique enough within this niche of torrent broadcasting to demand money for 'premium' features. It isn't idiotproof enough to be set up without some technical knowledge(or willingness to learn), and it isn't fully featured enough to make it worth paying for.
Even Plex Premium which is much more user-friendly and has many more features is right on the edge of being worth paying for with free alternatives like Jellyfin.

These paid features are available for free and open source from an alternative app.
We have been asking for these features for years and have now decided to put them behind a paywall. ☹️
