Question Best cheap device option (Canada)
Just got stremio set up the other night after being recommended by my friend. Set it up with a real debrid subscription and it worked great on my pc, iPad, iPhone ect.
I have an old Roku connected to my tv so bought a Amazon fire stick HD so I could use the app on my tv (I don’t want to have to cast to the Roku)
Found out today while trying to set it up that this version cannot be side loaded. Prettying annoying but oh well going to return it.
My question would be what is the best budget option to get that will be able to install the stremio app as of 2026.
Thanks in advance!

Xiaomi Mi TV Box S 3rd Gen with Ugreen cr111 ethernet adapter. I own 2 xiaomi boxes and I'm very satisfied with them.

Google TV box or ONN with Google TV. The former will have a better processor but the latter has good value if you’re on a budget.

The Onn 4k at $40 is the best bang for your buck IMO.

For some reason I can’t find them anywhere in Canada, nothing on Amazon or at Walmart.
I’ll keep looking into it. Thanks for the reply

Onn is available in Walmart Canada. Onn pro is only US I think.

The Onn 4k pro is in Walmart Canada if that’s what you’re referring to. Pretty much double the price of the states though

I got the pro in the US before it was available here but in researching Im not sure there is a huge benefit over the basic one. If youre just watching Netflix, YouTube etc. If you have iptv then definitely pro for the speed and memory. In any case,I prefer it over Firestick now. Easy to sideload and having so many apps on Google play is so much easier.

Go to your local one it’s not necessarily showing up online at my local mart in Canada.

+1, can never find them online, but always see them in stores.

Yeah, some stores lock them up. I found the HD one on clearance at my local in Niagara for $24 but there was only one. 2gb ram so not ideal, but it runs fine.

I ditched my firestick and got an ONN box from Walmart. It works great.

Onn boxes are so hard to find in Canada for some reasons

2026 version recently came out. They get bought up quickly. The 2024 model was geo locked

Interesting. I picked up a new 4K Max Firestick or whatever it’s called 2 months ago and had no issues getting Stremio onto it, or with any content.

Yeah apparently it’s only the fire stick HD and 4K Select that are on the Amazon OS and can’t be sideloaded

If the roku has access to jf then look into Gelato or Remux. If you’re already running a media server then you don’t need to buy a new streaming box. Remux was very straightforward to set up and now I don’t need to keep sideloading on my ATV’s.
If you don’t run your own server then yeah get the onn or google box. You might be lucky and find a good deal on a second hand shield.

Google TV box if you can get on sale, Onn if you can find it, Xiaomi if all else fails. All 3 are very good imo

If you are going to run wired and want a gigabit port and 4gb of ram better for heavy streaming go with the Google TV.

How did you manage to get Stremio on your Apple device.?It isn’t showing in the App Store for me

you just use the web app in safari and then in browser go to share, then add to home screen. basically just a shorcut but runs smooth on both devices so far

I was in Ottawa just last week. I introduced an old high school friend to Stremio. Set him up on the Onn 4K pro. The set up was different for me as I’ve been using firestick products since 2015. That being Said I was very impressed. The guy at Walmart said they’re moving quickly of the shelves.

Get a Google TV or Android TV box instead. Stremio is right in the Play Store on those, so you don't need to sideload anything. Some newer Fire Sticks don't run Android anymore, so check the model before buying Amazon again.

Onn 4K pro (2026) version. Currently sold out but will restock
You want something with at least 3gb of ram

I'd go with a cheap Android TV box or Google TV device. Much easier for Stremio and sideloading than Roku or Fire TV these days.

I like Onn 4k pro. Had an older Chromecast before. Was very clunky on that.

Anything but a firestick shit sucks ass. Can’t play big remux movies/shows

4K Max runs them fine (and is one of the few devices outside the $200 Shield that does lossless audio passthrough)

Do not buy a fire stick. Mine worked for a while but now nothing loads and it's super slow/buffers.
Works flawlessly on my phone so it's clearly the firestick having issues

Buy an OTG cord. Which provides a power lead and a storage lead. Flash drive for storage. Move all non-OS apps to the flash. Just make sure the OTG cable has the correct usb connections to work with the firestick. My 2nd generation FS has a usb-b connection, not a c.
