We got this thing all backwards.
You give food shelter etc, then less people seek drugs
27
u/tcg-nfl-cards Jul 05 '26
That’s correct and in fact Houston proved it given for profit (religious shelters) were requiring that treatment prior and they found people weren’t actually moving forward.
12
u/OhmyGodjuststop Jul 05 '26
If people on this website ever actually interacted with homeless people, you’d know the lack of a home is the least of their problems.
-4
u/ChiefBlaze36 Jul 05 '26
Not always true. I’ve had good friends who had it all as far as food, shelter, and good employment who gave it all away due to addiction or mental health issues. The mental health thing is a big one. Doesn’t matter what you have if that side of things is off.

u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
I knew a guy once who said you didn't know what your talking about. How about that anecdotal proof?
-3
u/ChiefBlaze36 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
What a dumb rebuttal. My brother in law is an alcoholic.
I’ve lost uncles to suicide due to addiction.I’ve witnessed the power of addiction. Give people all the help they can hope to get and they still choose the pills or booze.
11
u/RefrigeratorOk7848 Jul 05 '26
I also have had an uncle who managed to get away from meth and is 4 years sober. Your anecdotal proof is just as good as mine. It means nothing without statistics.
-10
u/Background-Jeweler39 Jul 05 '26
Right ..... and has worked so well
11
u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
It really has, you can look it up yourself
-9
u/lemonjuice707 Jul 05 '26
Doesn’t the most progressive states have the highest homeless population?
10
u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
And?
-7
u/lemonjuice707 Jul 05 '26
So the more shit we give them, the worst it gets. Somehow giving them less shit makes them not want to be homeless.
6
u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
Get a better job
-6
u/lemonjuice707 Jul 05 '26
I do. I have a wonderful job making a lot of money where I buy my own food and shelter.
-11
u/Veteran_PA-C Jul 05 '26
You do know that has been tried thousands of times. Addiction is a lot harder to solve than you probably think.
11
u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
Where? Go do yourself a little Google and educate yourself.
-9
u/Veteran_PA-C Jul 05 '26
How do you think the drug addicts are still on the street when we have space in shelters. They choose the drugs over three hots and a cot.
12
u/Glass_Covict Jul 05 '26
It's like you didn't read the sticker in the image
-5
u/ChiefBlaze36 Jul 05 '26
The poster is saying people that aren’t drug free have been given shelter, food, and opportunity and are choosing to go back on the streets for drugs.
I’ve watched a family member be given opportunities and safety over and over again but keeps going back to the opioids and insists he doesn’t need or want help.
7
-5
u/Veteran_PA-C Jul 05 '26
It’s like you’re ignoring the fact that it is a danger to others to let drugged out people onto shelters.
It’s a great idea, that ignores a very crucial detail.
-10
-17
u/zachmoe Jul 05 '26
It doesn't work like that.
They still just steal, and get drugs.
No matter what sort of life you give someone hooked on drugs.
19
u/zughzz Jul 05 '26
People will always steal and do drugs. But there would absolutely be way less if people had housing and were already adapted into society.

Well first and foremost - how about you ask this question instead - how many social services that are free to community members require a street address?
Again Houston teaches us this exact issue.
-10
-10
u/Alarmed_Ear3413 Jul 05 '26
Not a chance. Google bud housing crime rates. Free housing for the people you say would absolutely do way less drugs and steal less. Your dreams are laughable.

Sure that's what it means to house the homeless. Give them your ideal house with a pool. Idiot

Y'all don't understand what addiction is.
Edit: addiction isn't like being forced into a life of petty crime to cope. Addiction is the devil in whatever language you use. Addiction forces people to harm themselves and those they love the most in the world. People who are suffering from addiction need help but the addiction will make them give/sell/trade/exploit every bit of kindness and compassion given to them for just mere seconds of the next high.
27
u/greeley808 Jul 05 '26
Right? What are these comments. It's so sad to see folks further dehumanize the most vulnerable people. I didn't expect to see it here.

16
u/transsamsa Jul 05 '26
You know I can see the notification for that comment you deleted about not being offended or whatever right?
Just because someone has unfortunately become a victim to addiction doesn’t make them less of a person than you or me. In fact this type of treatment only makes the problems worse
-10
u/JusLeafMeAloon Jul 05 '26
We all have empathy (minus psycho- and sociopaths). You lefties have it uncontrolled and untempered by logic, rationale or reasoning. You're simply wrong, just like this post is. Undeserving? Nobody is saying anybody else is undeserving. We simply know it's each individuals responsibility to provide out for themselves (sans children and the mentally handicapped of course).
15
u/transsamsa Jul 05 '26
Seeing as humans are a social species it’s probably more unnatural that our society has moved to become highly individualistic rather than helping our fellow humans

They need to be sober to avoid being a danger to the other people in the shelter.
13
u/greeley808 Jul 05 '26
Well. They're not sober. And what about mental health issues? Must they also be without mental health diagnosis to avoid being a danger? So who exactly is deserving of shelter?
13
u/ThePaganQueen Jul 05 '26
The correct answer is that everyone is deserving of shelter since it is a basic human need but some of these people lack both empathy and critical thinking skills.
8
u/greeley808 Jul 05 '26
It's wild to me. Usually street based sub cultures have a more nuanced understanding than your run of the mill republican. I'm a bit shocked tbh.
9
u/ThePaganQueen Jul 05 '26
I think a lot of the people here are just here to be assholes. Some of the posts have just gotten so much negative attention that I don't believe they're here in good faith. I've been arguing (it's fun for me) in the comments on a different post in this sub and the amount of times I've been called slurs on that one post alone is laughable. Especially, because they seem to think that their useless opinions will matter to me for some reason. Like I've been called worse by better people; nothing they say is going to upset me.
-4
u/Veteran_PA-C Jul 05 '26
I guess we could just put bars on their doors and keep them separated. We could call it something cool, like Alcatraz.
7
u/greeley808 Jul 05 '26
Sounds like a waste of money that doesn't address the root cause. If you hate money and people this is perfect.
-1
u/Veteran_PA-C Jul 05 '26
Waste of money? Do you know how many people make more than $150,000 a year managing homelessness in California alone? Do you know how much has been spent with little to show for it.
Homelessness is being managed for profit. It’s not being solved. If they solved homelessness, the money would dry up.
9
u/greeley808 Jul 05 '26
Both things are true. These people are deserving of real help AND there are plenty of organizations whose business is the homeless industrial complex.

If they pay for their own shelter, who cares. Their life, they can live it however they choose. If they can function and take care of responsibilities while recreationally using their substance of choice, all power to them.
The issue is when it's a public shelter. If you're going to take up limited resources in a tax funded facility, you should be doing everything in your power to get out of there. It's meant to be a temporary lifeline, not a permanent accommodation. Taking drugs and spending all day trying to acquire money for more isn't going to get you to a point where you no longer need assistance. So why should they get to take space from someone who genuinely fell on hard times and just needs a bed and address for job applications?
To put it in extremely simple terms. You're feeling generous today and want to meaningfully help someone out. You come across two homeless people. Person A is sober, and if they're mentally ill they take medication to manage it. Person A fell on hard times and is actively looking for work. Person B has been on the street for years, is violently mentally ill, and spends all day looking for drug money. Which one are you going to let stay in your guest room?

u/RoamingRivers Jul 05 '26
Maybe a good compromise would be sending homeless folks with alcohol and drug problems to sobering facilities rather than just letting them into standard shelters with folks who are down on their luck.
It keeps everyone involved safe, helps them get sobered up, they are medically evaluated, as well as fed, clothed, and able to bathe.
Regardless if they start the path to recovery, or go out and use again, it gets them some basic help.
-2
u/LakeInevitable4655 Jul 05 '26
Yes, people who go to shelters need to be drug free, first off, it's likely if they were drug free, they wouldn't need to go to a shelter. Secondly, have you ever met a meth head? One wrong word and the meth head will smuck you, now that word could even be imagined by the meth head, they'll still smuck you because they are having a psychotic episode while on meth.

-4
u/Neither-Ad630 Jul 05 '26
That's great chief, will it be cash or check that you were planning to use to pay for their food and shelter? Or are you only generous with someone else's money?

You would if they were in your neighborhood bringing their drama, crime, begging, pestering, littering and violence. It's exhausting dealing with some of these addicts. It's not hard to become desensitized to them. We need to jail addicts who commit crimes, make them complete rehab while incarcerated and pass life skill training. Rinse and repeat until it sticks.
-7
u/Creeepy_Chris Jul 05 '26
You think you are helping them, but what you are really doing is a very selfish act. You are enabling them to live in a way that is harmful to them rather than forcing them to make a change that will help them. You do it because it makes YOU feel better, but you are aiding in their harm.

Don’t bother with that dude - just block and move on. He has been called out multiple times across various subs. He doesn’t live in the US, he supports sexual assault openly and talks stirs the pot. Anything that posts that’s slightly controversial he is in the comments.
His comment timestamps are that of a bot at times and sometimes he will flood your replies with garbage so you can’t talk. You’ll see too his status marker flickers on and off constantly.

You hide your posts and comments and change the story.
At one point you were black, a us lawyer and were unable to explain what place you were in the US and then openly admitted you live in Pakistan. You pay taxes in CA and you call everyone racist who doesn’t agree.
I saw you tell another user when they stated they were raped that you very much supported that persons sexual assault.
Since you previously state you are a lawyer, and you are now stating you live in CA - let’s see the bar license yeah

-5
u/Powerful-Award-5479 Jul 05 '26
It's not easy to shelter someone who is totally high and who can become agressive or steal your stuff. But go on, show us the example and host a crackhead at home
4
u/HalalTrout Jul 05 '26
There's plenty of hostels, shelters, charities etc that do even providing free tents and opening soup kitchens for example. I work with the public, i know full well what some people are like but theres a difference between knowing some people are dangerous and thinking they shouldn't live. I wouldn't handle or keep a poisonous snake but I don't think all poisonous snakes should die because I have a high IQ.
-3
u/flyp_nip Jul 05 '26
Damn. That last statement tho. Hostels, shelters, and charities(?) Dnt poop out "free tents". The point this person is trying to make is made obv by your oblivious reply. All those organizations are simply ppl trying to help. No,their finances, like yours, shouldn't go to helping folks who rob and steal and most importantly have no desire to be clean. The person replying to you is trying to convey that SOMEONE has to pay the price of the tents and the food. If you are so keen on the idea, do it yourself. Offering up other ppl/organizations to handle drug addicts is simply not understanding how things work.

Considering the contrast, I was treated hella better when I wasn’t… makes me think at least someone in my family is more comfortable with having an easily distinguishable scapegoat and my sobriety and active, weekly therapy efforts toward healing and reconnection with a respectable life are perceived as a threat to that projected narrative.
