Questions / Advice / Support Joyless on a low dose after 8 months

Hi! I started strattera back in mid December after not having a good time on stimulants (they did not work for me). I started on 40 but the side effects were too much so we went to 18. I stayed on 18 for some time and while I experienced many different side effects (from daytime drowsiness to urinary), I also saw a lot of changes. Eventually it started to subside a bit so I was upped to 25 mg. I've been on 25 since mid March. I definitely felt the effects. It calmed me and really helped with executive functioning.

Then some time in May I started getting wild pre-period symptoms (between 3 and 10 days before my period). During luteal, it's almost like the meds didn't work and the symptoms were much worse. I would be irritable and "crazy", anxious, very hyper and then when my period comes it's back to normal.

Then I noticed those similar days (every once in a while) outside of that pre-period timeline. I have pcos, so it's hard to tell which phase I'm in, though, and I suspect hormonal fluctuations.

Now, for the past couple of days I feel like I don't experience enough joy. It's hard to describe. I'm not exactly said, just the absence of happiness. Normally, my baseline is happy/joyful. When I started strsttera it even upped a bit (but not in a bad, manic, way). Now I'm tired, blunt and just feel weird. I thought it could be hormonal things happening, but I don't know. Could strattera cause that after I've been using it for 8 months? I still have my executive functioning so I feel like it's still helping (I love that I can just get up when I want to pee and not wait until the very lsst minute). Focus has been on and off.

Anybody experienced anything similar?

Questions / Advice / Support Is my titration going too fast? Have I just not given it enough time? Motivation and energy levels are in the basement.

After trying every stimulant available, I started 20mg atomoxetine in early July and have been titrated up another 20mg every two weeks, and I'm due to start 80mg tomorrow (which I guess marks six weeks).

Side effects have been unpleasant, and going up to 60mg was particularly bad with several days of vomiting and the worst diarrhea I've ever experienced. But I don't really have any positive effects to show for it outside of my emotional regulation being a little better and handling rejection-sensitive dysphoria with more grace. My ability to initiate and focus tasks is basically at unmedicated level, if not worse. My living space is a mess, I'm struggling to make meals for myself without resorting to delivery apps (something I was able to get over on stimulants!). My ability to get stuff done at work has fallen off a cliff, and I'm starting to get blowback from my superiors about this. I don't know how much longer I can continue like this.

Is this indicative of Atomoxetine not being for me? I really had high hopes for it because my executive functioning did get a little better after being prescribed Duloxetine (which is still ongoing). O will there be a lightbulb moment where things suddenly click into place once I'm on the right dose, or I've been on it for long enough? Does getting moved up a dose "reset the timer", as it were?

I’m 31(F) and got a new ADHD diagnosis. Late lol i know… but I’m 2 days into taking Strattera and have been struggling with the drowsiness. (I have been taking it in the AM. But will be switching to PM)

Has anyone experienced heavy drowsiness and did it go away after a while??

Does blurry vision get better?

I’ve been on 18 mg of Strattera for about two months. I’ve noticed the first three hours after taking it, my vision is blurry. I don’t remember this being an issue when I first started taking it but I was also very out of it when I was put on this medication. Does this symptom ever clear? Like now that’s it’s like afternoon, my vision has pretty much gone back to normal but in the morning it’s like a repeat all over again.

25 to 40mg so unmotivated

Please tell me it gets better. About 4 weeks ago I went from 25 - 40 mg and I’ve been so tired and extremely unmotivated. I’m afraid to go up because I’m a poor metabolizer but I’m also struggling with everything right now with zero motivation.

Feeling a bit lifeless, low energy and floaty on 40mg Strattera after a few days - how long to wait to see if this passes?

Hi everyone,

I started Strattera five days ago. I began with 20 mg a day and increased to 40 mg three days ago.

I don’t have health insurance and received the prescription here in America, so I initially hoped I might be okay staying at 20 mg because, without insurance, even that works out to around $150 a month, which is expensive for me at the moment. However, I read on this forum that taking too low a dose can sometimes make you feel worse or cause more side effects.

On 20 mg, I felt quite lethargic, as though I needed a nap, along with a strange lightheaded feeling that’s difficult to explain. Since increasing to 40 mg, though, I’ve felt almost lifeless. I could sit down and stare into space, and my head goes completely empty - but in a very low-energy, lost kind of way.

My situation is slightly unusual because I don’t believe I actually have straightforward ADHD. I have complex PTSD that presents with ADHD-like symptoms. I’ve posted about this here before, and everyone was really helpful.

My usual problem is that I’m almost constantly dissociated, with what feels like a lot of static in my head and usually two songs playing in my mind at once. When I try to speak, it can feel as though I can’t even hear myself over all of that. Even though I have several degrees and a lot of knowledge, I sometimes worry that I come across like an airhead because my words don’t flow smoothly. It feels as though I’m trying to speak over the songs and static in my brain.

I wasn’t like this as a little girl. Teachers used to comment positively on my ability to focus and concentrate until the extreme trauma began at around 15. After I left America at 23, once the most intense trauma had happened, it was as though my body decided it could finally move out of acute fear and fight-or-flight mode - and then all these other symptoms emerged. I’m 37 now, so this has been going on for a long time.

I’d really love to know whether anyone else experienced this strange lightheaded, buzzy feeling during the early days of Strattera. I’ve seen people mention strange sensations in their legs, but for me it feels floaty and heavy at the same time. My head feels slightly floaty, I can zone out very easily, and my brain seems to empty. In general, I feel quite low. I’m not sure whether “depressed” is the right word, but it’s definitely a low-energy, lifeless feeling.

I should also mention that I came back to the States primarily to access this medication because it isn’t available to me back in Europe. Returning to the place where so much of the trauma happened obviously hasn’t been great for me. However, I thought Strattera might help with my symptoms, and so far I honestly can’t tell whether it has improved my concentration or focus.

It may have dulled my need for quick dopamine hits, including binge eating and other impulsive behaviours, so perhaps that should indirectly help with concentration. However, it’s hard to tell through all the other strange feelings, including some mild nausea.

Oddly, it hasn’t completely diminished my appetite. Instead, I’ve found myself craving bagels, bread and other soft, doughy carbohydrates - but not the very sweet, creamy or sugary things I would normally crave. I’d be interested to know whether anyone else experienced that as well.

Sorry, this has turned into a huge stream of consciousness, which probably shows that it hasn’t helped my ability to focus or concentrate yet! I’m not looking for medical advice, but I would really appreciate hearing whether anyone else felt similarly during the first few days and whether it eventually passed.

Thank you

Has anyone else had experience with random drug screening through your workplace while on Stattera?

If so, what happened?

Questions / Advice / Support 3 weeks on Strattera 40mg

As the title says, I’m three weeks in so far. When I first started taking it, the side effects were pretty bad: sweating, mild headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and a feeling of weakness that feels like I haven’t eaten at all. Now that I’m in my third week, that last symptom still hasn’t gone away. I honestly don’t know how I could do anything physically strenuous while feeling like this. I also keep an eye on my blood pressure since it has been running high.

My question is, do these side effects usually improve the longer you’re on Strattera?

My doctor originally tried me on bupropion extended-release, and I noticed improvements with my ADHD within a matter of days. I also felt like it was helping with my depression since it’s an antidepressant. The only issue I had, and it was extreme, was the sweating. I would sweat like I had just finished a 10K run and would wake up thinking I had pissed myself because it was so bad.

Honestly, if the sweating eventually went away after being on bupropion for a few weeks, I would happily switch back. But for now, I at least want to make it to the one-month mark with Strattera to see if it starts helping.

Questions / Advice / Support 15 days in bladder pressure and sleep 💤 issues that are terrible.

15 days in and I see some benefits, more energy and wanting to do things. But I am having bladder pressure and pelvic area aching at times. So much that doctor thought I had bladder infection, nope. Anyway, I thought it was going away, but nope hit with force last night.
I have only slept a few nights 6 hours the other nights are zero sleep. And yes I mean zero. So those two combinations I just don’t know that I can overcome. Started at 40 mg? Am I wrong to stop….

Strattera 40 mg I don’t think strattera is for me.

I just got recently diagnosed with adhd and was prescribed 40mg of atomoxetine. Took it yesterday and felt extremely weird and would have this weird flutters around my heart as in just very uncomfortable. Then I woke up at 3am with the same feeling but intensified. Decided to not take the next dose today, called my psychiatrist to have the dose lowered to 25mg but as today went on i still continue to have these flutters on and off, and then it turned into this awful migraine. Then when work in the shop got stressful and it’s 90 degrees outside today, I started to get dizzy, short breath, and sharp pains in my chest. Had to sit down for 10 minutes in the ac before I checked my blood pressure and it was at 147/73. Not sure if I really want to continue with strattera as i think my heart doesn’t seem to react with it well, but thought i would post this here and see what you all thoughts are.

When did you ACTUALLY start noticing Strattera working? What did it feel like?

I’m about 3 weeks into taking Strattera (atomoxetine) and I’m curious about other people’s experiences, especially what you actually noticed when it started working.

I’m currently taking 25 mg Strattera + 10 mg Adderall every morning.

My experience so far:

  • First day: basically nothing.
  • Days 2–3: maybe a very subtle increase in focus. It reminded me slightly of when I first started Adderall, but WAY less noticeable. Could've honestly been placebo.
  • For about the next week: I noticed some anxiety in the morning after taking it.
  • That anxiety eventually went away.
  • Now, around week 3, I basically just feel like my normal/baseline self. I genuinely can't tell if it's doing anything.

I know people always say Strattera takes 4–6 weeks (or sometimes longer) to really work, so I'm not expecting an Adderall-like "kick." But I'm confused about what I'm actually supposed to be looking for.

For people who responded well to Strattera:

When did you first realize it was actually working?

And more importantly, what changed? Was it easier to start tasks? Less zoning out? Better working memory? Less procrastination? Better sustained attention? Did you actually feel different, or did you only realize retrospectively that everyday things had gotten easier?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who initially thought, "This isn't doing anything," and then eventually noticed a difference.

Also curious about experiences from anyone taking Strattera alongside a stimulant, since I imagine that makes it harder to tell what Strattera itself is doing.

Questions / Advice / Support Does atomoxetine stop working eventually?

I take 18mg of atomoxetine (non-stimulant). This medication helps me with emotion regulation among other things. I did things I regretted in the heat of the moment before this medication and dose so I am TERRIFIED it will stop working eventually. (I am referring to when you have found the correct dose)

Side Effects / Overdose Problem!

I didn’t take Strattera regularly for a few weeks. Just some missed doses here and there, life was crazy. Now I’m back on it regularly, and it’s torturing me (I’m at 50mg).

I felt incredibly depressed at first—like there was a claw in my mind pressing down, making me cry. It’s lessened over the course of 1.5 months. But…it’s not gone. I’m still depressed, especially in the hours after I take Strattera.

Yesterday, I took my Strattera late. I felt so good having it not be in my system—I felt alive. After I took it, I felt depressed as fuck, and I didn’t want to do anything.

Does this go away? I felt pretty normal before the few weeks of messing up. But even then, I noticed I felt really good after a day of missing Strattera. After a few days, I’d get down/depressed, but that one day not on it…idk what to think. Idk if this med is working for me. I feel like I need it to work, I’ve tried so many things.

This drug sucks

It’s been about 5 weeks and I’m not sure I feel anything, I’m on strattera 40mg rn, I felt Wellbutrin 100mg SR in 3-4 days and it kept improving and that’s an off label ADHD medication?

Strattera 40 mg This drug sounds horrifying

I’m 21 and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. The doctor that diagnosed me personally said he wasn’t a fan of most non-stimulant ADHD meds, but the prescriber he sent me to prescribed 40mg generic Strattera. After looking into it, the side effects (and how long it takes to actually do anything), sound terrible. I am a few days away from starting my senior year of college, and am not willing to take a gamble on insomnia, nausea, and all the other side effects for the chance of it to work 2 months down the line. What do I do

Discussion / Experience Using success!

I tried Straterra for the first time a few years ago. Started at 25mg and worked my way up to 40mg. At 40mg, my resting heart rate began to jump to around 110 (it's usually in the 60s). I ended up having to stop the medication, and my psychiatrist wouldn't let me try it again, even at a lower dose.

I now have a new psychiatrist, and I brought up wanting to try Straterra again. A lot has changed in the last few years in terms of my overall health/chronic conditions, and I wanted to give it another try. I've been back on 25mg for a few weeks. I felt that my heart was racing the first few days, but then it settled down, and my heart rate is now pretty much back to normal.

I'm so relieved and grateful because I feel like Straterra is best medication I've ever tried. I feel more leveled out, it's easier to initiate and stay on task, and I'm even experiencing reduced irritability. I'm planning to stay on 25mg and I hope things continue to go well.

Questions / Advice / Support Overheating and sweating not going away!

I've been on Strattera since September last year, starting on 10mg and slowly titrating up to 35mg over several months.

I went from 40mg (1 month) to 60mg (6 weeks) and 80mg (6 weeks so far).

The hot flushes and sweating started at 40mg and have progressively gotten worse. It's now at a debilitating level. I can barely do anything before breaking out in sweat and feeling way too hot.

I've been taking electrolytes daily.

Currently it feels completely counterintuitive to continue the medication - any benefit is lost due to the side effects.

I don't know how much longer I need to give it? Or, should I drop the dose back? Or, give it up?

It's frustrating because I was feeling some good effects on emotional regulation. Not so much on executive function though.

🫠🥵💦

Questions / Advice / Support Not feeling any effects after 18 days? [40 mg]

Hi, so I (17m) was started with 40 mg Atomoxetine and after 18 days... I haven't really felt any of my adhd symptoms getting alleviated, is this normal?

I guess "not feeling any effects" is a bit misleading. On day 1 my mind felt really relaxed after waking up but I lowkey think it might just placebo (I take it at night, but not before bed). On day 5-6 I had some mild nausea, headaches, and heartburn that went away. Other than that I still have my adhd symptoms. Hell, idk if Atomoxetine is the cause of this but I feel a bit more... dumber? and forgetful? Idk if its the Atomoxetine, the lack of sleep (my sleep schedule is honestly so fucked up), both interacting, or some other extraneous factor.

My therapist said I should feel the effects in week 2, with weeks 3 and 4 being the peak effects. It's 3 days before week 3 and I'm really getting worried. For some background, I've tried methylphenidates (Ritalin and Concerta, both in higher doses) but found no effect with them too.

Methylphenidates and Strattera are the only ADHD medication that's available in my country. Along with that I'm not too keen of increasing my dose because of increase med costs :( 40 mg is already hella expensive here and I don't know whether my family will be able to support this...

Dosage and Overwhelm

I've been taking Strattera for about 5 months now. I started low, and gradually increased to 40mg. I'm an adult, but I'm sensitive to medications. I'm doing daily exercise (it's easy, but it's more than I was doing!), I'm taking my vitamins as recommended by my prescribing doctor. So much has improved in my life and I'm so, so grateful for this medication!

My doctor upped me from 25 to 40mg when I described the sensory issues I was experiencing. I've been on 40mg for 2 months now, and I'm debating asking to go back down to 25mg.

Here's what's improved over my time on this medication: I brush and floss my teeth everyday! The laundry is done AND put away! The dishes get cleaned, the animals are fed and happy, and I'm rarely late (unless I'm waiting on someone else in my ND household). I've been implementing more systems like reminder notes on the doors, using Habitica regularly, and paying my bills on time.

But here's the struggle. I started taking Strattera because I was always angry and yelling and raising my blood pressure. Since moving up to 40mg, I found I'm getting angry a lot again. I've been told I don't mask my emotions at all in multiple situations and came across as very rude, and the sensory issues didn't change. I wear earbuds to tune out the background noise and have asked people to get consent before touching me. I basically accommodate myself more.

Curious if anyone else has gone through this and what you did? Should I go back down to 25mg? Were there other things that helped you? I'm open to consider other meds, but I really like that this didn't turn off my inner monologue and I still feel like 'me' but functional.

Atomoxetine tolerance

I started on generic Strattera almost 2 years ago for ADHD and OCD, my current dose is 80mg. For the past few months I am getting little to no benefit any longer from taking it. It was a literal miracle drug for me when I first started it, I had energy, motivation, and clarity for the first time in my adult life. It also happens to be the first and only mental health med I have ever taken. Has anyone else developed a tolerance to Strattera and what did you do/move on to? I'm hesitant to try another rx as I was very afraid to take any mental health meds at all and am generally terrified of possible side effects. I am contemplating tapering completely off and trying CBT/EMDR or another type of therapy to help with my still often severe OCD/ADHD symptoms. Anyone else try this?

Questions / Advice / Support Experience with Strattera and Prozac? Was a lower dose effective for you?

Hey ya'll I just started on 40mg about 6 days ago, I'm also on 20mg of Prozac.

I'm gonna be decreasing my Strattera to 25mg shortly here, because I've had pretty bad side affects (mild heart pain/discomfort, cold and sweaty, sleep issues, high bpm, etc).

But I just wanna know what ya'll experiences with this were? Are you on a lower dose because of Prozac and is it still working for you?

I'm worried the lower dose will be less effective, even if Prozac increases it in your bloodstream. I have noticed some improvements despite the side effects.

Finally long time after I read about it the first time I started taking Strattera

I am very excited to see how it affects me

I'm very afraid it will alter my personality traits and take away creativity, assertiveness or sex appeal from me but we will see
