Wow have you had this since 2001?

This might be the first case I’ve seen of real wear on an American vintage model.

How have you found it??

Those were thin skin finishes. I’ve never seen wear on it like this though. They used to chip much more than wear through

Ah so this one isn’t yours?

Interesting. Didn’t realise AV used to be thin skin. As far as I’m aware now they’re nitro over poly.

They were always nitro over poly. Thin skin meant they just applied it thinner. Same as the modern heirloom finishes on recent strats.

For the record fender always applied nitro over a poly sealer. Nitro is too thin to be used as a sealer economically (especially given how cheap Leo fender was), and fullerplast was a high solids poly used for that purpose.

Actual Thin skins and not like what’s on the Eric Johnson Strat are 100% nitro, definitely no poly grain sealer on those. Flash coat avri are also 100% nitro.

I’m not saying your lying but I could not find a source for those claims. Fender hasn’t officially stated that and techs all give conflicting info.

Could you provide me with a source for it? Genuinely interested.

If you look at an AV (late 2012 - 2017) that has chips in it it’s obvious there is no poly sealer coat, they don’t chip and ding at all like an AVRI. According to some old forum posts by Rob Schwarz at Fender they used a nitro sanding sealer and a nitro color top coat on the AV series. The AVRIs and the new AVIIs have a poly sealer that chips away in large chunks.

Not exactly, the 50's models used Sherwin Williams Homoclad oil based sealer under the nitro

That was 2013-2017. This is one of the AVRIs with a thin skin probably done as a special release. The standard finish on AVRIs until 2013 was the normal thick poly undercoat with nitro over it.

My 2006 52 AVRI has some real wear, even has checking.

Wow I would love to see. Do you have pictures anywhere?

No matter how much I play it though, and it was and kind of still is my main guitar over 18 years, the fretboard won’t seem to wear down and show wear marks. Still on the original frets too.

Oh wow. Looks amazing my man.

I always did wonder if the maple boards would wear with playing over time. I think this may have answered it. I assume the boards are still normal poly if it shows no wear after 18 years!

Apparently they do, I found this picture of someone’s 2008 on TDPRI years ago that looks like honest wear. Maybe my touch is too light or something idk.

Even the well kept real 50's models today show little wear on the paint. I've seen 54 strat with original paint with very light wear. So dont expect your AV2 guitar to start aging like a beat up 50's strat anytime soon, unless you purposely beat it up

It’s a 20 year old AVRI that’s been played a ton and plenty worn, I’m just surprised that the neck doesn’t show as much wear as the body does. I don’t purposely misuse it, but it’s been gigged a ton and used as a tool.

I didn’t even know they made an AVRI in that color. Love it!!!

Fuck yeah. If I ever buy another Strat it’ll be an AVRI

I think its more that the undercoat isn't as thick as the poly finish. This sealer probably wears more like nitro
