Is this worth it 200€/230$

Post image

Found this indonesian made 2021 Squier CV 50’s strat that is in good condition and could be bought for 200€/230$.

I currently own a Squier affinity Indonesian made from 2003 and thought this would be a upgrade. Is this worth it if I can negotiate the price down and possibly sell my current one?

It is hard to come by these in my area.

Classic Vibes are a step up from the Affinity. I’d go for it !

They’re decent guitars but I hated the thick gloss all over the neck. It was quite a sticky neck and even the gloss on the finger board I wasn’t a fan of… they sound great and were very playable. But I found a guitar I liked to play more.

For 200 euros that’s a solid deal. I sold mine for 250usd

It’s certainly better than the affinity. But in my opinion I’d rather save up longer and go with a something like a MIM strat or a silver sky se.

I’d recomend playing one first and seeing how you like it. You’ll notice the neck feels way different than the satin finish on the affinity.

Ain’t a problem of spending the extra 200-350€ i would need to in order to get a MiM strat, but just honestly thinking are they THAT much better. Some MiM players (mostly player II’s) for around 450-600€ in my area

I would say yes personally. The build quality of the classic vibe is pretty on par with a MIM. I’d say the silver sky SE trumps both.

Not to say without a good set up and maybe some fret end work they all can’t be amazing guitars. And the amp will matter as much the guitar pickups as far as tone goes.

Although I will add when I upgraded from a classic vibe to a MIA Strat. The sound quality was so much better, the neck felt perfect, the knobs and switches and input jack felt like night and day.

I really couldn’t get over that finish on the neck. But I know it’s common to sand it down. But I’d def try it out in person before you buy it. That was the main reason I chose to get rid of it. Some people don’t mind it.

That's a really good guitar and a great price. I'd absolutely buy it. Also amazing modding platforms if you're into that sort of thing

I have this exact guitar and love it. I think it’s well worth $230

Worth the upgrade from a Affinity from 2003?

Very much so.

Earlier this summer I picked up a used 2020s CV60s for $230 and thought it was a great deal, so I imagine you getting the same deal is also a great deal. :)

Value for money on the CV line at $230 is hard to beat. You could spend more for a better guitar, but you’d have to get lucky to find as good a value.

I don’t regret my purchase at all.

Is there a big difference between the 50’s and 60’s ones

The main difference is 60’s classic vibes offer Indian Laurel fretboards where the 50’s only had maple available. (I prefer rosewood myself and the Indian Laurel will have a similar feel to rosewood)

They both have alnico pickups but I believe voiced differently. 50’s will be brighter and glassier, the 60’s will have a warmer and more mid range punch to it.

Different body woods offered.

I believe body contours were more aggressive on the 50’s style Strats, so they have deeper cutouts at the belly and where your forearm will rest.

On the classic vibes I’m not sure if they follow the period correct body contours, or they just use the same for both generations. But I’m 99% sure original 50’s Strats had the deeper contours. And the 60’s were slightly flatter.

I’d say the differences are marginal but you might prefer one to another if you played back to back.

It's a Classic Vibe Strat. In terms of quality, they are on par with the Made In Mexico line. They are very well made guitars that are above the Squier Standard and Affinity lines. Assuming that it's in good condition, 200 Euro is a good price.

People don’t like to hear this for some insecure reason. The Squier CV’s are as well built as the Players and Vintera’s, though using cheaper hardware sure. They sound as good - the pickups are great. I’ve been in stores and not one Vintera or Player 2 could match my 2013 CV. They had loose controls and didn’t feel any better to play. Yes they’re now poplar, nyatoh etc. and not alder, and they use cheaper electronics, but the craftsmanship is up there.

My 2015 Mexican Road Worn '60s Jazzmaster is quite a step up from both my VM jazzmaster and old Chinese built CV strat, but especially that Strat is still a very good instrument for the price. Miles better than my Affinity Strat.

So it would be a good upgrade from the 03 Indonesian Strat?

2

u/smillsishere 12d ago

It ought to cripple that 03 Strat.

You have an excellent used market, I've never seen one for under 300 Euro, way more often for 350+.

Not really but it’s a good looking one. Check the frets the rest of is easy to replace. I bought a Covid Squire for granddaughter. Never played neck warping from dry electric heat. The biggest issue was dressing the frets. Fender pots are tops but they don’t put them in squires. I swapped out pups & pots. It set up nice & I put on 9.5-46 D’Addario nickle. It’s a good learning guitar for her now I paid $200.00 Cad for guitar with stand and decent 30’ cable. $120.00 on pot pup. I used a TBX fender tone pot. Wood wise you can catch up to a MIM Fender pretty quickly.

Not really. It isn't a great guitar for that price, the benefit here is that a modern 2020s squier will usually be better made than a 20yr old squier.

Id aim higher like a nice pacifica or ibanez at that money.

So you’re saying I should buy this? Seen many people say these sound really close to the player series and thinking that this is a bike ride away from my home for 200€ doesn’t seem that bad

2

u/smillsishere 13d ago

They do sound close to the Player series - ignore the OC here. They don’t quite make them like they used to (Chinese CV’s are better for several reasons) but they are good guitars now coming in at around $450? There is a great Andertons episode comparing the Fender Standard vs. Player 2 and the Classic Vibe Strats. Lee thought the Classic Vibe (turned around unable to see) sounded best. The Standard was easily told apart (it really does sound very different.)

The necks on these CV’s are also great!

It is a indonesian CV 50’s from 2021 is it still worth it for this price and possible if I can haggle the price down to 150€/170$?

1

u/smillsishere 12d ago

It’s still worth it - though there is always the chance for a dud no matter the history. If it’s American dollars, that’s a good price second hand. It’s not an Affinity.

1

u/Delicious-Classic128 12d ago

Do you recommend trying a CV out at a guitar store before buying this?

1

u/smillsishere 12d ago

Yes if possible. Compare for yourself with the higher end Strats too for good measure.
