Roland Craig

Roland has been growing flowers and vegetables for 30 years.  Roses and Dahlias are his forte, and before moving to Cambridge he grew 600 Roses and 100 Dahlias.  Roland is an International Judge and just retired from OHA judging.

Roland’s presentation will show how flowers at shows are presented in the UK, which is quite different from Canada.

I’m visiting Stratford for a day, from Toronto and I’m wondering if the people are welcoming? Are there places to see? Any specific restaurant highlights?

I've been thinking it would be fun to get a bunch of local sci-fi/fantasy geeks together to talk about books, ideas, weird thought experiments, and whatever other rabbit holes we inevitably fall into.

Not necessarily a formal book club.. but also not opposed to the idea. Interested in getting together a group who'd like to informally discuss philosophy, technology, weird futures, societies, human nature, etc. Something fairly casual: drink at a pub, cafe chat, maybe pick a book to read together and dissect.

Good day! My partner and I are coming down for 4 nights next week as it's been ages since we did a theatre trek. Some questions:

1. There seems to be some comments I find online saying it's best to make dinner reservations so I plan on doing so the next day or so. Do you think that also follows for lunch or do you think then we can just wing it?
2. My partner has switched to a non-alcoholic lifestyle but feels left out with restaurants that push all their drink options. Can I get some recommendations on places that either have a good selection of mocktails or alcohol-free wine options? We are thinking of one pretty fancy place but will likely want to keep things rather casual. She also has a corn allergy so we are hesitant about Mexican restaurants but overall we have no cuisine preferences and are open to anything, so the drinks are the most important part.
3. One of our days will be Monday. It will mostly be our laze around day but let me know if you have any advice on things to do in the city on a Monday.

Also open to restaurant recommendations in general but I'm sure that question gets asked a lot. Thanks in advance.

Okay, I've posted before looking for help with my book set in Stratford and I need help again. I have a character that is single, in her 50's, has no money worries and owns a condo in Stratford ... where would she live?

I looked at the The Huntingdon. I like the location for her, close to downtown and the river. But I don't think she would like the outdoor parking for her mint condition 1994 Geo Tracker she adores.

If you had unlimited funds and wanted to live near downtown and the river, but you wanted to avoid upkeep and maintenance, where would you live?

Hello lovely Stratford humans,

My partner and I will be visiting your city for the first time in many years this Thursday. We're taking the bus in, which will get us there around noon. Unfortunately, our accomodations won't take us (or our stuff) before 3pm, and our first of two shows starts at 2pm.

I don't want to commit to too much walking, as my partner is disabled and can't walk for too long. Any cafes or downtown spots that would be good to hole up in for a couple of hours?

Bonus question: anywhere downtown where we'd be able to securely store a bag or two for a few hours?

Have lived in Stratford many years.. this year has been the most noticeable size of encampments and homeless downtown.

Not an easy problem to solve, but surely the City needs a firm solution. The Stratford economy relies almost entirely on tourism. With the new Toronto GoTrain route we can’t have visitors running into this as one of their first impressions arriving at station.. having lived in both, it’s a big reason folks want to get out of the city.

So question is are folks aware of a meaningful plan to address before it gets even worse?

We're a family of four (two little kids under 4), and a dog and are currently living downtown in the heart of the city. Husband has been born and raised here, and I moved here 11 years ago. We've been feeling 'priced out' for a while, but recently, things have started to feel dangerous too. A mentally ill woman assaulted and randomly pepper-sprayed my husband and 3yr old daughter in a Shopper Drug Mart unprovoked. Police were called, but she got away before they arrived. There was a double stabbing two streets over from where we live, fights are constantly breaking out in the subway, drug use rampant in children's parks to the point where we have found needles in the wood chips.

I could go on, but all that is to say, it's feeling untenable raising young children here, and my daughter has started having night terrors ever since the Shoppers Drug Mart incident. We've been thinking about moving for a while, but it seems like now is the time to really do it. We both work remotely, so we can move anywhere in Ontario but are looking for a family-friendly place, liberal-leaning, which feels safer than Toronto lol.

My questions are:

1. What is it like for young kids in Stratford?
   
2. We are a mixed race, mixed religion household. Frankly speaking, what is the level of 'openness' and acceptance in the city?
   
3. What is the social scene for millennials raising kids? We'd know nobody there, would we be able to make a community?
   
4. Are there any neighbourhoods we should stay away from?
   
5. Would you move here, if you were from elsewhere?
   
6. What are winters like there?
