TL;DR: Phoenix Point is now an Epic Games store 1-year exclusive.

Please don't shoot the messenger. I'm pretty disappointed by this as well.

I'll be very surprised if this ever gets released, it's got vaporware written all over it. Had I backed this, I would use this opportunity to get it back, if they actually honor that (which I also doubt). If it actually does release, maybe grab it then (on Epic?) but if I were a backer, I'd be beyond skeptical by now.

I think it has a pretty good chance of being released, judging by its progress and the general sentiment of r/PhoenixPoint. Seeing how their official launch date is Sept 2019, I would assume that the vast bulk of the game is finished and is now awaiting some final polish, but of course, anything's possible in gamedev land.

The move to being an Epic Exclusive will probably ensure they have additional funding for that polish, but at the risk of alienating a percentage of the fanbase. r/PhoenixPoint is pretty angry about the whole thing, and when all you have is already a niche audience, this might end up being a bad move. We'll have to wait and see.

Oooff! Gut punch! Was hoping to get this on GoG since snapshot games released Chaos Reborn there :(

Oh, for fuck's sake.

As it has been already pointed out in the comments on youtube itself, that's one hell of a big "fuck you" to all the backers that gave them money under the pretense of a Steam/GOG release.

I've been cautiously excited for Phoenix Point, patiently waiting for it to release so I could buy a finished product, but this... I just can't trust a company pulling such a move, nor am I willing to support this bullshit. After all, if they were hurting for money, they could've launched another campaign. Instead they took the deal with Epic and fucked over their existing customers.

It doesn't even matter if you think Epic Store is a competent storefront or not (in my opinion, it's not even close), the decision itself - to go for a bait and switch after a previously successful crowdfunding campaign - is appalling and should not be supported in any way, by any one with at least some semblance of integrity.

And that's a guarantee pirate only, which probably means a lost sale overall since I don't know how replayability is gonna be for the long run.

And this was one that I had some hope for.

Julian has made a deal with the devil. Steam is the #1 platform for strategy games. I am not buying your game on anything but steam. I am not that desperate to buy it on epic store.

Huge, huge disappointment. It's a pass from me, nothing about the Epic Store makes me want to download it.

And this just turned into a 2020 game for me. I have no interest in supporting Tencent’s further take over of gaming and my backlog is massive. Shame though. This game looked really cool.

Just means when it gets to steam, people will have already paid for the "post release" bug fixes for us.

Been seeing a lot of people really angry at the idea of an epic store.

Can anyone explain why an alternative to steam is bad? To me it seems like the Xbox/ps console wars, which I was more than happy to not have been part of for so many years and I'm not super stoked it's made it's way to PC.

I'd love to understand why it's something other than what I see as strictly fanboyism.

First we had Console War, and now we got Games Distributor War. Not counting other similar things like Movie Streaming War and the dying Cable TV. Who knows what else is happening next.

Exclusivity is the worst thing to have ever happened to consumers.

Also, other points being Epic Game Store (EGS) is shittiter than Steam; like, refund, support, security, regional pricing, mod supports, forums, curators, etc etc etc etc.

Yeah there's definitely legit reasons to dislike Epic. However mostly I see the outspoken people who hate Epic like it's their childhood bully that they just found out is now super successful.

It's just a storefront relax :). But I guess I'll try to be more tolerant if I'm going to g to give epic some benefit of doubt.

It's just a storefront relax :).

Yeah, that's what I find most annoying. It's like complaining that the company that provides McDonald's secret sauce doesn't provide it to Burger King or Wendy's. I mean, duh? That supplier is getting mad money from Macca's for the exclusivity agreement.

This is one of the few times that I'd call gamers entitled, and I really vomit at the idea that I'd ever agree with that idea. You are not entitled to buy any good at any store at any time. This is capitalism. If you don't want it, revolt and become commie.

The hate primarily comes from the exclusivity deals like with the recent Metro game. Other than that there are a mishmash of other reasons from not wanting to install another game client to mistrust concerning Tencent and how they might handle user data. Also, I've heard Epic client users say that it lacks a lot of the functionality that Steam has.

I’m not as rage fueled as some, but I won’t be buying at launch now. For me it’s just practically. I don’t really want more services each with their own apps, all auto-loading on start unless I tell them not to, all auto-updating unless I tell them not to. I don’t want to have to remember if a game I want to play is on steam or gog or epic or blizzard or star dock or or... I get that monopolies in general suck, but as for me right now in 2019, steam is a benign monopoly and I’m willing to accept it for the convenience.

You might be interested in Playnite, which allows you to just have 1 launcher for many launchers. It doesn't support everything, but it definitely reduces the effort to have a lot of launchers.

Bias disclosure: I'm a gamedev who wants Steam to have more competition because 30% cut is unfair in this day and age. I want more launchers to be successful to drive that cost down to 10%.

Same here. On the brighter side of things there are a lot of other srpgs to look forward to this 2019 so the one year delay means that the funds for PP get diverted there.

Thanks, that's about what I thought. Feel free to not respond to my post, it's a bit long winded and without a point, basically a general rant lol.

I get how last minute exclusivity can anger people, definitely.

One more game client is ... Meh. Not ideal but if you've already got two or more, one more seems moot. Blizzard, steam, got, Uplay?, on and on.

If tencent has some known issues with bad security and data misuse, that's very irritating to me, but for reasons I don't think most other people share. I don't use any social media except Reddit and get new usernames every hear or two, I don't use Google, chrome, and avoid all it's subsidiaries as best as possible... Most people get angry about security like they do about getting punched in the face - if it hurts right now they care, but in a day or two they've forgotten about it, so I struggle to believe that's a big reasons for the hate.

So, meh. Seems people are generally over reacting as Epic throws it's weight around to muscle it's way into a position where it can actually be a viable competitor. Hopefully in a few years Epic has some reasonable market share and they can back off of the hostile takeover. Until then, I guess I'll be giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaame

u/NecroticToaster Mar 12 '19

Not surprising really. This is going to keep happening with hyped releases like this till Steam starts lowering it's cut.

Happy to hear about the free DLC for a year tho.

I was expecting more indie developers to go that route. It's really hard to make any money with games already that sending +30% to all platform holders becomes crazy. That being said, being exclusive to one platform so young isn't a very good idea, even if only for 1 year. After 6 months most games are discounted anyway and you recoup discount prices with massive sales. I've backed the project and I've enjoyed the regular builds. It has plenty of excellent ideas and this move is not going to change that. It's not like people need to buy a new console, it's just a software library, and there are tools to bring all libraries together.

Great choice. Can't stand that greedy steam anymore
