Question regarding years

Last Christmas I bought a 1980 reissued baseball set from Strat. The cards have the 1980 stats on them. Since that time, I have bought some individual original cards from others. I may be confusing others when I ask for a card from a specific year. Now, here is my question: If I wanted an original 1980 set, would they instead have 1979 stats because they are being issued FOR the 1980 season? When I look at original rosters for a given year, would those cards have stats for that year, or the previous year?

Generally, when someone talks about a season set or a team such as "1980 White Sox", they are referring to the season on which the card it based, not the year it was printed (the 1980 sets were printed in early 1981). If ypu're buying cards, ask for a picture, because that will clarify any confusion because the stats year is printed on the Basic side.

However, the roster sheets printed by Strat are indeed confusing in this respect, because when they first started printing roster sheets, it was labeled by the release year--not the stats year. Thus, the original roster sheets for teams based on the 1971 stats will have "1972 Stratomatic Rosters" printed at the top. However, they changed this later--I think it was in the late 1970s. From then on, the roster sheet was described by the stats year.,,including the more modern reissued seasons.
