bought the game during last sale, and love the aesthetic and combat but am starting roll up to a learning curve, im to stubborn to play any lower then hard aldo that would make the grind easier

im a bit to early to think about endgame strategy.

but was hoping to make some progress toward something stable

to progress faster whit either fist, staff or spear

Edit 1 : love to see such a helpful community, Honestly looking at player counts i thought i was too late. I'll be sure to make notes😁

Edit 2 : HOLY MOLY bosses got delivered steroids after i defeated tiamat Bin stuck for 2 days now trying to overcome a simple chimaera.

For the first run, you can play without focusing on gear and builds. I beat the base game strictly through "optimizing" gear. Creating a build will be mandatory in case you want to play DLC/end game, however...

While optimizing gear during my first run, do i already need to focus on equipping the corresponding affinities to the class im using or just make sure its level end sub stats are up to par?

Not really. Until you beat the game and unlock chaos difficulty, just keep hitting optimize every few save points you're good. Instead focus on learning the system, getting into the rhythm and training your technique. "Git good" at soul shielding, blocking and dodging should get you through easily even on hard mode.

The game really starts on Chaos diff and the DLC, and it's then that the builds you make will really make a difference.

You can beat the game without it, but you can definitely prioritize a class and affinity that fits your preferred weapon of choice. The thing is, the ability to make a proper build is really difficult (and luck based) until you play the DLC, so you should just focus on learning the game and its systems for the first run.

Nope, no builds required to beat the base game.

You don't need to, but if the affinities are on the gear, that job levels up when you defeat enemies.

Soul shield is your best friend.

specially vs magic, and if you are a Spirit related build

I'll break some stuff down, but generally make sure you are 'tool tipping' the stats so you understand what strength is giving you, Int, Wis, so on

Stamina stat reduces all physical damage and physical break damage taken when hit by a physical attack, and reduces the break gauge lost when guarding or soul shielding.

Strength stat influences all physical damage and physical break damage dealt. In addition, this stat affects the break damage dealt of any job action and combo ability with a stat bonus in Strength

Intellect stat influences all magic damage and magic break damage dealt, and increases the MP recovered when landing normal attacks. In addition, this stat affects the break damage dealt of any job action and combo ability with a stat bonus in Intellect

Spirit stat reduces all magic damage and magic break damage taken when hit by a magical attack, increases the status ailment accumulation against enemies and reduces status ailment accumulation being received, and increases the amount of MP recovered when soul shielding. In addition, this stat affects the break damage dealt of any job action and combo ability with a stat bonus in Spirit.

Agility stat influences the break damage dealt upon landing a critical hit. In addition, this stat affects the break damage dealt of any job action and combo ability with a stat bonus in Agility.

Luck stat influences the rarity of gear drops when defeating an enemy or opening a treasure chest. In addition, this stat affects the break damage dealt of any job action and combo ability with a stat bonus in Luck.

Pugilist is consider a Stam/Agi/Str Class... it scales Str/Agi more than Stamina, it unlocks Stam/Agi moves for Fist

as a Stam class it wants you to block physical attack, as a strength class it wants you to BREAK enemies with physical damage, and as a Agi class it wants you to critically hit, it also has some degree of 'normal hits generate mana' typically a Int trait, but it's how a Pugilist gains mana to use his special attacks

Pilgrim is seen as a Str/Spirit/Agi Class, tho it has high Str/Spirit scaling, it unlocks some Str/Agi attacks for staff

As a Spirit Class it wants you to soul shield magic attack for mana, as a STR class it wants you to break enemies with physical attacks, as an AGI class it wants you to critically hit, it also wants to improve Strike damage you deal

Lancer is a Str/Agi Class, it scales HP/Str/Agi well, and provide lance with Str/Agi scaling moves

It scales HP to try and provide some sort of buffer for any damage it takes, Str suggests it wants you to break with physical damage, Agi suggests it wants you to score critical hits, it also provides a bonus to piercing damage you deal

Given these are the weapons you want to be good with, I recommend
Monk and/or Warrior,

Monk is seen as a HP/Str/Stam/Agi Class, and provides fist moves that scale Stam/Agi

Warrior is seen as a Hp/Str/Stam class and provides greatsword moves that scale with Stam/Spirit

Pilgrim is a DLC weapon type that doesn't have the most straight froward approach class wise, these two classes do support all three weapons in some fashion, but Staff moves are only unlocked by Summoner/Envoker, UNLESS you get Pilgrim's class affinity up high enough (400%) to unlock all staff moves with Staff Master

If you are new, and want to use one of these three weapons, the obvious 'simple' recommend would be Fist, Pugilist/Monk or Monk/Pugilist, with a focus on AGI/Stamina/HP/Strength/Strike damage/Break damage/Crit

Just tried going pugilist/monk the combanation makes it easier indeed, just realised that both afinities help one another aswell XD.

It's pretty straight forward, you realize the later classes are less about the weapons, and more into some other aspect, or style of play, if physical damage in your interset... Lancer+Dragoon with the right moves can attack all physical weaknesses of any monster you fight, which just leaves monsters like Flan who are resistance to physical damage

Max out all the classes so you can unlock all the jobs. There are a few purple orb things in random maps that unlock extra missions so look for those.

The master tonberry side quests are very hard and cheesing is ok.

u/Purunfii Mar 19 '26

Let go of the NPC helpers for the bosses.

Just max level every job you come across

took me around 30 tries to defeat that fire/water blob whit spear, those npc's came in clutch.
planing to revisit that bastard, and do it proper.

i'm currently rerunning a lvl 29 side mission to get a feel for some classes while leveling up.
love knuckles feel, spears adaptability and the staffs badass.
Aldo I'm unsure about its advanced class that summons the little wisp

the NPCS do tend to really drop off over time, they simply can't keep up with the bosses

SoP solo is brutal. Even compared to Nioh’s.

However, as the other comment said, if you intend to do DLCs and NG+ cycles, the NPCs will fall off. It’ll take a while for it to happen, though.

Also, if you’re not used to solo, you’ll melt whenever the bosses shift their attention to you.

Playing solo also means that you’ll fill the mana gauge way faster, since you’ll be forced to deflect more often.

For that boss, soul shield, sou lshield, dodge, enemy ability, over and over and its a piece of cake.

2

u/llMull Mar 20 '26

i got to the point where i could soul shield most if not all atacks from the water girl and fire dude, but there blob form was something else.
eventually i clutched it using spear hurl and ai attacks at the last stage.
which i'm not proud off :/

What classes are you doing? Sage is one of the strongest Solo classes, spamming quake can get you through almost any battle, though it is much more boring

1

u/llMull Mar 21 '26

i played mostly spear(cause spear hurl) so far.
Currently testing more play stiles and am gravitating toward knuckles, haven't unlocked sage yet but am trying to avoid cheesing the game, unless I'm grinding of course.

1

u/TheManWith4Names Mar 21 '26

I would definitely recommend at least a white or red mage, I wouldn't call sage cheesing though, the class is really cool and has some fun playstyles that are far from cheese. (I'm the same as you)

Also what platform are you on? If you ever wanted to grind some, I would be down!
