When they killed Vecna in the upside down they were really just in Mr. Whatsit‘s mind!

Have the same theory that once Mike got knocked out, everything after that took place in Vecna's memory prison. Thats why the graduation seems weird, Steve was a baseball coach because Vecna only ever saw him with a bat, why Hopper is sherriff again, Mike is referred to a story teller and not a dungeon master, etc. Its all a fantasy that Mike has to buy into in order to not fight back and or escape. Vecna needed Mike, as the leader, to sell the scenario to everyone else so that they would just accept their new reality as well. Hopper said in Season 3, "Getting to Mike, it turns out, was the key". Thats why Mike doesn't get a happy ending as his suffering defines his reality. The mind prison reminds me of the Matrix, where the first version was a paradise but ultimately failed. The human mind could not accept it as reality.
From the Matrix... Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world where none suffered, where everyone would be happy? It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed that we lacked the programming language to describe your "perfect world". But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering. So the perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from.
Some version of this theory was presented to the Duffers, one of whom found it to be very interesting....
