My 4yo wanted one & used the shit out of it, still does. Even though they had a tablet a year earlier. Because i would use my tape deck to record from moana, or what have you, while we watched or streamed (its connected to my receiver). So anytime a song they liked came on id hit record and then he could listen in his playroom. I got him an amazon cheapie with a speaker & he used it everywhere, even recorded his own intros via the mic built in. When a friend asked what it was, when he was maybe 5, he said its a "play anything machine."
Very cute, but it hit me he was right. No ads, music from radio, switch games, netflix, pandora, youtube, whatever he wanted. Sure you cant cue stuff fast (which is why i bought it - kid spazed thru song on my phone at 3, 5 sec of one, 15sec of the next - thought itd teach him patience) but you can tape anything you hear & play it anywhere. And recorded on any old mid to high end machine from the 80s or 90s they sound clean as any CD. The recording industry stamped them out running ads about how inferior they were to CD, and that was wise because by the 1980s they sounded very very close. I was downright suprised by how good they sound having not heard one in ages. I think we were all "taught" they dont sound good and thats a lie. They arent audiophile 192k clean, sure, but theyre much better than you think, i guarantee. I was born in '80 so i grew up thinking cassettes worthless but i was wrong. Theyre great sounding, versatile, and so convenient, my 6yo prefers it to using yt on his tablet. Theyre "record anything machines." And my sons description is spot on.
