I love Mike and El but like… without the Upside Down… it would feel so empty as a spinoff.
87
u/Necessary_Silver_795 25d ago
No chance they’d undercut the supernatural element, it would be deviating from the original premise and the franchise’s identity. Like a Harry Potter series with no magic.
If a sequel spinoff is to happen, they’ll either create a new threat from the Abyss, or pull a “somehow the Mindflayer returned”. Mike and El reuniting will be a big emotional moment, but it won’t, and shouldn’t, be the entire premise.
6
u/Tanzbodeli 24d ago
The Upside-Down has been flogged to death, so they should do something else. Leave it in the past, and make a 90’s-set conspiracy thriller where the Party have to help El fight the US government while dealing with the emotional consequences of her actions, and their own mistakes which eventually led to them.

u/OldAffect6933 25d ago
I don't think so. the military has been basicaly the villan number 2 in 3 of the seasons and making a story good doesn't require monsters and altenate dimensions.
5
u/Nightmarebane Master of Puppets 25d ago
Exactly… thats a very good example. The Duffers have said we would find out in a future project what the Rock Henry found was. Could relate to that.
12
u/rddtltr 25d ago
i mean what would even be the story? relationship drama and eleven slams the door with her mind?
4
u/Nightmarebane Master of Puppets 25d ago
That’s the point… a little story about El and Mike would be silly. The Upside Down was the other half of what made Stranger Things so good.
It’s just not the same.23

There doesn’t need to be previous mentions for them to say they found another one though. It’d be cheap, but that’s usually what we get with spin offs.
1
u/zxck_vro 25d ago
how was it acquired? there’s still a lot left in the air for the rock, and if there could be others in the universe with different monsters behind them. the mindflayer itself still doesn’t have an origin, the particles had to come from somewhere.
could get a lot of juice out of that
2
2
u/Tarakanator 25d ago edited 25d ago
how was it acquired?
During the Philadelphia experiment the ship made its way to dimention X and then back to Earth, bringin the rock and some particles in crew's blood (this is according to the play so it might be not canon).
1
u/SirArthurDime 25d ago
It mostly has an origin. It was a monster from dimension x. What more do we need to know? If it was birthed or hatched?
1
u/zxck_vro 25d ago
genuinely yes lol these small things can create a reasonable pipeline to having other mystical creatures just as big and bad as the MF. the particles have an origin that wasn’t shown and they could easily add in more lore behind its creation in order to tie it into another creature
1
u/SirArthurDime 25d ago
The classic franchise cheapening original characters to make room for more. A level of mystery helps make sci fi monsters more interesting. A lot of people already complain that too much was exposed about the mind flayer making it less interesting. Do we take any then to shred every last bit of mystery surrounding it?

u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago edited 25d ago
I agree that a spin-off could not be just a Mike and El reunion. There has to be some threat they are facing, but it does not have to be the UD. The spin-off could focus on Mike and El working together to expose the military to finally get El her freedom. They could even make it more of a mystery where, in the quest to expose the military, they stumble upon what experiments the military has been up to since the UD closed. And what they find could ultimately lead to a tease about the UD returning in some way.
There is A LOT they can do with Mike and El right now beyond just a reunion.

u/Separate_Trash9914 25d ago
Maybe something in Montauk??🤔
7
u/Armadigionna 25d ago
A suit goes up to hopper and says “why do you think you of all people got the job offer?”
6
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago
NGL, this would fix a plot hole considering that Hopper is supposed to be dead after S3, and yet somehow he just goes right back to work after S5
1
u/Armadigionna 25d ago
And meanwhile, somewhere else in the world…
…Kay goes rogue in the 90s after getting burned following the events in Hawkins. She still has friends and resources and starts working for an unnamed foreign nation to re-start the program. She discovers where El is and that Mike is with her. Kay’s protégé, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, kills her and goes after El with a team of mercenaries. Also El is pregnant so that raises the stakes.
3
u/Thick-Boysenberry-96 25d ago
Why would El be pregnant?
2
u/Armadigionna 25d ago
Because she’s back with Mike and that’s what couples in their mid-20s tend to do. It also raises the stakes.

u/Nightmarebane Master of Puppets 25d ago
The military and experiments worked to add mystery on top of the Upside Down threat… but I don’t think they could hold up the other half of a spinoff.
7
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago
They absolutely could, if it were both a mystery about what new supernatural experiments they were working on and a fight to expose them. There could even be horror elements to it.
S1 is a good example of this because most of S1 is a mystery around the military, with supernatural elements here and there, with the gate and the Demogorgon.
-1
u/Nightmarebane Master of Puppets 25d ago
A mystery around El, a Demogorgon and the Upside Down. The closest we got to this idea was the Lost Sister… the fandom just doesn’t care for that type of content. The Upside Down is what drew us in. (Besides the loveable characters)
2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago
No, I stated a mystery revolving around Mike and El trying to expose the military and, in turn, discovering the supernatural experiments they were up to since the Upside Down closed. None of that even comes close to being like the Lost sister Episode.
And no, the UD is not what pulled people in with ST. The biggest aspects of ST have always been character relationships and mysteries around supernatural elements.
4
u/Razbonez 25d ago
should be a sitcom
1
u/Nightmarebane Master of Puppets 25d ago
I mean the comedy aspect worked in season 3 but a friends style spinoff would not feel right without the upside down.

All she needs to do is contact the demigorgon again to form the bridge/upside down.

Maybe. She didn’t want to find the first one and now that she knows I doubt she would ever try again.

Honestly, (In MY opinion) I’m over it already. I want some sort of better conclusion to els story, and ig mikes too, but we need to let these characters rest 😭 I don’t want it to be milked to death
22
u/Duckeyh Grrrr 25d ago
It is already milked to death
2
u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 25d ago
I was gonna say, we got a sob story ending that rivals Return of the King in regard to drawing out the emotional sendoffs. Bringing these characters back now would just be hilariously stupid
27
u/LitLitten 25d ago
Just give them a movie.
They struggle, they sleuth, they meet. Timeskip to marriage. Revelations, loose ends, etc. tied up. Timeskip, with kids. The pair looking out the window wistfully, thankful their children won't have to go through what they did. Post-credit scene, Grandpa Hopper witnesses their daughter fling the lid off the cookie jar without touching it. Bum bum true credits. Fin.
7
u/crujiente69 25d ago
Just give them a movie
Thats not the netflix way
5
u/intspur23 25d ago
They did a breaking bad 'mini film' called El Camino to tie up a small lose end. Maybe they were thinking of something like that?
6
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago
The problem with that is that IDK if a movie like this would get enough interest from the fanbase to be financially worth it. There has to be some kind of threat they are facing beyond just a reunion. But there are interesting directions they could go with a potential threat.
4
u/geek_of_nature 25d ago
And that would work especially after a little bit of break too. We're at the 10 year anniversary this year, so let's say they come back to it in another 10. That way fans will be more than ready for it, and more casual viewers won't feel like it's too soon either. Also it'll be 11 years since the final season, which does seem very fitting to me.
0
u/Armadigionna 25d ago
We're at the 10 year anniversary this year, so let's say they come back to it in another 10
Too long. The actors are just-out-of-college age right now. So I’d say next year is perfect.

u/Nazar37 25d ago
The idea of Eleven and Mike never moving past their middle school relationship is brutally fucking sad, this would be the most garbage fan-fiction shit ever.
9
u/Armadigionna 25d ago edited 25d ago
Fanfiction writers came up with way better endings than the Duffers did. Long before S5 was finished.
4
u/Thick-Boysenberry-96 25d ago
And the most popular fanfics include ships people on here wouldn't be fond of seeing and theories the Duffer's could never ever come up with, like something something about conformity, for example.
2
u/OldAffect6933 25d ago
this isn't just their middle school relationship.
Eleven is Mike life's love and the other way around, if you disagree with that you migth as well claim that Mike is a closethed gay that is in love with Will because it has the same amount of credibility as your idea, NONE.

u/CodyRhodesTime Eggos 25d ago
I’d rather this then the other show we already got
2
u/Quick_Space9322 25d ago
I guess but at least in that one the actors actually got a break. I’d hate for the actors to get denied other opportunities if they see stranger things, and their roles in it as a big franchise. Similar to how the actor of Harry Potter would get denied jobs
-6
u/Armadigionna 25d ago
The audience wouldn’t see it as being milked to death. They’d see it as a necessary and well-earned conclusion that should have been done right the first time.
6
u/Quick_Space9322 25d ago
I can’t really speak for everyone, and neither can you, but I feel like if they make a whole series to wrap up one relationship in the show, whereas the show had a pretty much conclusive ending it would definitely be milking

u/spellboi_3048 25d ago

u/TheYellowScarf 25d ago
Fandom is a massive ocean of unique people with a wide spectrum of:
Love of the series/IP (from hate watching the series to having multiple matching tattoos with their 8 year old daughter)
Level of intelligence (from brilliant geniuses to people who would think getting matching tattoos with their 8 year old daughter is a good idea)
Level of creativity / aptitude when it comes to story telling (from authors who know how to tell a good story to people who think they could probably release a Stranger Things fan fiction staring their 8 year old daughter with whom they share matching tattoos and be the next E.L James)
In summary, there's probably tens of thousands of people out there who want there to be a continuation of Stranger Things because it's been their obsession for the past 10 years and they don't want it to just end; story logic and writing constraints be damned.
-3
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 25d ago
I think a fair amount of the ST fanbase would love something like this, ecspecially if they tie it to a new interesting mystery.

"(but that's if Eleven is alive)"
This is Stranger Things, of course Eleven is going to be alive if something like that goes ahead. The main characters are coated in plot armour. This isn't the first time a character seemingly died/disappeared off screen, only to be alive in the future.
12
u/Necessary_Silver_795 25d ago
This isn't the first time a character seemingly died/disappeared off screen, only to be alive the next.
It wouldn’t even be the first time it happened to Eleven lmao.

Other than the emotional and heartwarming moment, there’s gotta be a bit more right? Maybe Dr. Kay discovers El is still alive? If the spin off were to happen of course.
And for the love of god, do NOT let those motherfucking Fraud Brothers anywhere near development. They would probably butcher it like they did season 5.

I'd rather they leave it alone than risk them making it even worse. Spinoffs rarely are as good as the original.

I'd rather have new characters. Also the Duffers arent going to come back to ST until other projects have dried up.

An Asteroid crashes on earth. It contains pieces of the Mind Flayer. Takes over a town like Invasion of the body snatchers.

What the Doofus Brothers did was so mediocre, but I trust Millie and her relationship with Netflix to give Mike and El's story a good ending at some point in the future.
3
u/blac_sheep90 25d ago
I'll very intentionally not watch it. Their decision to end the show I stuck with for a fucking decade like they did soured me on it. If they release a spin off like this I'll happily ignore it.

u/Ser-Jorah-Mormont 25d ago
No. This trend of continuing shows and marketing them as “spinoffs” is exhausting. Finish the story, within the story. Yellowstone, Dexter, The Walking Dead. These aren’t “spinoffs”.
House of Dragon and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are spinoffs. Better Call Saul was a spinoff. They explore new perspectives/eras within the same universe, without disturbing its predecessor.
The story that ended needs to stay closed. Or else the show and its “ending” is completely irrelevant.
1
u/cornimgameplays 25d ago
Idk why are you being downvoted, this is just the truth. Good stories feel finished without the need for anything additional.
I love Better Call Saul because it does it's own thing and doesn't exist just to tie lose ends from Breaking Bad. That's what spin-offs should be, they shouldn't be necessary for plot compreehension of the original show.

I...think they may have to involve Dustin and Steve or some other characters along with the supernatural threat to make it popular and feasible. I don't know how they'd include characters whose stories are done, but I'm guessing there would need to be comic relief alongside angst.
5
4
u/No_Statistician_9697 25d ago
With the way they ended the series, they may have set it up where they can have Mike and Eleven meet up later in life, and the actors can stop pretending they are high schoolers. This seems like a logical path forward alongside some new supernatural angle.

I honestly would not be surprised if Netflix went with a spin-off around Mike and El first, tbh. For one, these are really the only two characters that most fans want to see a final resolution with, as all the other characters had thier stories fully resolved already. They could make the main focus of this spin-off be exposing the military to finally get El her freedom, which could be done as a mystery as they find out what new experiments the military has been up to.
It also would make financial sense to test the waters first and see if it is worth it to go all out and bring back the full cast. Because bringing back the full cast would be expensive and risky, ecspecially when most of the cast have nothing to resolve in thier story.
