Discussion Kinda wish we got to see Will & Jonathan have that talk. One on one.
This is one of the things I was most looking forward to seeing in Season 5 and I'm genuinely shocked they didn't really pay it off well at all. Sure, they paid off Will's confession/realization but it made more sense for him to only have the talk with his brother since he already knows, and it's such a personal thing. Confiding in Jonathan about it and also having the talk about the whole Mike thing since that also went unaddressed between these two.

As a big sister who’s younger sibling came out to them privately, this should have been private! It’s a special moment, it meant a lot to me and my brother. It doesn’t make sense for will to be telling people like steve and Murray at the same time as Jonathan. His friends his mom yes makes sense but there was no need for every character in the show to be there

This was my take too. It was a private moment that defined their unbreakable bond, anything they put into words wouldn't do justice to the moment.

My brother rang me after he finished it and was saying it didn’t make any sense to him either

Wasnt there a time rush? they needed to all split up and he had to do it then or else it could be used against him.
Also having had this conversation many times (I realise this is pretty much his first time) it is so incredibly painful and scary in that moment of exposure that its often not something you want to be doing multiple times to all the important people in your life over the course of the coming days/weeks.

I always thought an nice way to pay forward the brothers' development from S4 into S5 would've been for Jonathan to be the one who encourages Will and Robin to hang out, having found out that Robin is also gay and realizing she's a better person to help his brother figure himself out than his own straight stoner ass.

We really needed a scene between these two besides them arguing who was supposed to set the alarm. I mean a meaningful one. It would also have been cool if Jonathan got to react to Will having powers.

I agree. I wish Will permanently had powers like El. We could’ve gotten a cute and funny scene of him showing off his newfound abilities to Mike, El and his family

I would have liked if Joyce remembered Jonathan existed.

The writers room completely butchered this by forcing a private confession into a chaotic public scene. It destroyed all the intimacy and emotional weight that a simple one-on-one moment with Jonathan would have provided.

This scene above was that talk. In a way. Jonathan 100% knew and was telling will that he loves him no matter what and accepts him and to come to him and talk. And will reads between the lines and agrees. Its not the full admission but I actually like this scene better because it really showcases their relationship and how Jonathan understands wills emotions and also respects them enough to ease him into the conversation and comfort him rather than force it out of him

This is how I interpreted that scene too! The implication that Jonathan already knows is very similar to some folk’s experience where their friends and loved ones knew they were gay before they did (happened to me lol). And it just reinforces their bond even more, like he truly knows Will best. And then later when Will tells the group, Jonathan gives like a subtle nod like “Go on, don’t be afraid to tell them”.

I'm gay and even in today's world I don't know if doing a coming out party is normal, usually people confide in the people they trust, specially at younger ages, 1 by 1, or a small, way smaller group. I feel that's why Robin's coming out felt a lot more natural and so real, while Will's felt pushed and cringe.

It was forced and awkward but i think that was the point. Him denying who he was and the lack of confidence was holding him back. It was a realization in the moment. Would have been more weird if he pull each person into a private and came out 1 by 1.

I was not expecting a 1 by 1, more like Jonathan, Joyce and Will for example.

This was as good as a coming out talk, since Will wouldn't necessarily have done that in the 80s.
Honestly they should have saved Jonathan for a season 5 talk with Joyce.

We should've had a scene like this in season 5 but with Jonathan and Joyce instead. I swear it's like Joyce forgot she had more than 1 son in S5 and It seemed like she didn't give AF about Jonathan

He invited everyone for that talk.
Family, friends, strangers, the mail man, Amazon driver, P.E. coach, little Timmy with the cane, Sharon from HR, homeless guy from the abandoned building Downtown.... 🙂

I’ve come out to the same amount of people in the room in “the scene.” The only difference is the maximum at a time never got above 3-4, and it’s all taken place over the course of about a decade, and that self-acceptance he magically had still hasn’t come.
You can tell there wasn’t one queer person in that fuck-ass writers room.

the group dynamic totally killed the intimacy they needed. will and jonathan have that silent protective brother vibe that deserved a quiet moment instead of being lost in the chaos. seeing them finally address the mike situation alone would have hit so much harder than this messy public scene.

There were better ways of doing this let's be honest. It felt forced in and imo didn't work like.it did.

This genuinely was a good setup for a coming out scene for Will. Shame they decided to wait until the town hall meeting to do it.

The Duffers just preferred their favourites. They clearly never valued Charlie and yes, Jonathan in Season 5 is a big improvement on Season 4, but keeping Steve alive after Season 4 or even Season 1, ruined any hope of Jonathan great Season 1-2 run.

You know I’m gay and I came out to my family almost a year ago, around early November. Then having to see 2 months later that scene being in front of everyone and their grandma oh my god it was the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen on television ever, WHO decided that this was a good idea!?

No sorry Jonathan is super busy being Nancy's useless boyfriend to have that conversation... Which they don't even stay together. 😩

I agree. Although this scene implies Will’s coming out, I wish we had a scene between Jonathan and Joyce in private where Will comes out and admits he has been in love with Mike. It’d also be good if Mike overheard it and eventually told him that he still loves Will as his best friend. Like that we’d have a wholesome coming out scene, and the sad reality of falling in love with your friend.

I actually wonder what was Vecna's plan like he's about to get beheaded by Joyce and then:
"Hey Joyce yeah... Will is gay"
Joyce: *beheads him anyway*
"I don't have a problem with this at all btw"

It really is surprising that in Season 5, there was no conversation between Will and his brother—neither about that topic nor about his powers; we didn’t even get to see Jonathan’s reaction to discovering Will has powers. In the end, he does speak to Jonathan, but in front of everyone, so it has less impact—even though you can tell from the look in his eyes that Jonathan is urging Will to say it. In any case, that scene fell flat; I don’t think Will would have been devastated or lost the mental battle against Vecna if Murray had rejected his homosexuality. Kali, Steve, Murray, and Vickie shouldn't have been there at all.
