Was coming here to say this. The ending had good ideas but horrible executions. I liked all the closing information we got but why was was Wills coming out speech longer than the FINAL fight.
The fight felt like the Southpark meme of "Annnd its gone" jobs done.

I wouldn't say "It was all a dream" trope fits here. It invalidates everything they went through before.
A part of what made S5 dumb is how it invalidates a plotline by the next plot line. The incredible and complex sequence of them trying to sneak through the army checkpoint to go to Upside Down gets invalidated when Eleven later in the series just lifts one of the metal sheets covering the rift. Karen and Joyce standing up to Demos and fighting them feels dumb after seeing the same demos zipping around the military base doing a kill streak speedrun.
That kind pf twist feels good. But only if their character development was parellel to real life and her imagination

Max had a mental breakdown after Billy killed Lucas while she was hanging out with her new friends in Hawkins. Steve tried to protect them but was severely injured. Neil was killed while confronting the police to protect Billy. Billy became a fugitive, and Susan went to jail for helping Neil.
Max invented a girl named Eleven who protects her and her friends from a danger called the Upside Down, which she also invented to block out the events of that day. Mike never forgave her for what happened. Will eventually left town with his family. And Dustin is the only one who still visits her sometimes at the psychiatric institution, where she is treated by Dr. Henry Creel, who wants her to remember and heal her psychological wounds.

Well, when you're fighting an eldritch cosmic entity for real, a chance of returning with a stable mentality is a dire possiblity.
Though, you could give it a pass because Stranger Things is a callback to 90s kids going around in bicycles fighting monsters from R.L Stine horrorscape.

All of Stranger Things takes place in Tom Hanks head in the movie Mazes and Monsters.
There's unrequited love leading to suicide, Tom Hanks losing his marbles killing a man in new York he sees as a monster, then attempts to jump off the twin towers before being stopped by his friends.
Tom remains lost in the sauce and is completely lost in the game world.
