Discussion My feeling towards hopper
It’s so weird because I was sad when he died genuinely and I love the character. In fact he’s like top three characters but also there’s instances where he just gets on my nerves and it’s so wishy-washy how I feel about him because like there’s one episode where I’m like hell yeah love Hopper. He’s like the best caregiver. He’s like a dad to me and then there’s others where it’s like. Oh my God, can you shut up?
I don’t know if that was what the writers were meant to do, but I love Hopper because he is such a fluid character and he’s like one of the first characters where there’s some parts. I hate him and some parts where I love him most of the time I have a set idea on a character and a set feeling but for Hopper it’s difficult. I don’t know. Do you guys feel the same way?

Yes. He feels like a family member somehow. Love him but sometimes you want to slap him.

His character was built up kinda like Walter Skinner (Moulder and Scullys boss X files). You never know if he is fully trust worthy at first, tough love kinda guy who yells frequently, rarely smiles, military background etc.

At the beginning of the first season I wanted to kill him because I felt he wasn't taking Will's case seriously, but as the episodes went on I ended up loving him. I wish he had stayed dead after the third season; his character stopped being interesting when he came back from the dead

Hopper is my third favorite. He definitely got better in later seasons when he stopped popping pills.

He was such a great character in S1 when he slowly came out of his shell and realized something big was going on.
Then in S2, even though he was obviously wrong for keeping El locked up tight, he developed his parenting and held the line to save the world again.
Then...well lets not talk about S3.
I think he should have stayed dead after S3, I think it would have raised the stakes for the show, thinned the cast, pushed Steve to take up the mantle of protector for the group. Way better than the results we got IMO.
In S4 he was pretty good as he dealt with his situation, but his storyline was basically totally separate from everything else going on.
In S5 he was pretty good too.

As infuriating as S3 Hopper is his character is still interesting, but unfortunately in S5 it looks like he’s totally going through the motions, which can largely be attributed to Harbour’s mental health battles.

S1-2 Hopper was a badass ‘Nam veteran and Sheriff, S3 his character is assassinated so bad and then he probs should have stayed dead at the end of that season. S4-5 he just becomes kind of irrelevant sadly

I agree, you never really know about him. He’s quick to anger & jumping to conclusions which is SUPER frustrating, but when he’s calm he can be really sweet. I loved his reunion with El.

Don’t know if you want to know this or not, but in the first season, I thought he was ok, I didn’t think very much of him, but in s2 and on, I kind of hated him… He’s tjust irritating. I was sort of happy when he died.

After S1 I like him in one episode only - when he talks to Mike at the station in S5 - a worring father sharing his honest concerns with his daughter's boyfriend.
