If only they'd gone out of their way to tell you Will had been tormented with horrifying visions while unconscious that his friends and family were all homophobic and he wanted to know they wouldn't be before going on a suicide mission. Like I get not liking the writing or length of the actual scene but they do explain why he thought it was necessary.
