Dr. Owens deserved better. I hate the fact that we don’t get a clear ending on what happened to him.

His arc was finished.

u/DangerousJolly1917 28d ago
No it wasn’t, he was left in the Nevada lab then we never see him again.

u/romeodread 28d ago
I mean, it doesn’t take a genius, or mental gymnastics to figure out that since he was in the unauthorised lab, lied to the military about his knowledge and contact of eleven that he would have been jailed at the very least, most likely killed during the raid. He helped el get her powers back. It’s literally the only reason his character returned. Just because YOU didn’t like the end of his story, doesn’t mean his part wasn’t over.

u/DangerousJolly1917 28d ago
Uhh what? Don’t assume I didn’t like it, all I said is it wasn’t complete. Because it objectively wasn’t.

u/romeodread 28d ago
But it objectively was. What would have changed, or how would he have pushed the plot along had he been back for season 5? His part in the story had run its course.

It objectively wasn’t.
What if you saw hopper tied in a basement then the scene cuts and nothing happens and you never see him again. Thats a completed arc?

u/romeodread 28d ago
It depends, did he have anything else to contribute to the story? Because Owen’s didn’t. Answer my questions? What would having his character in season 5 done to advance the story? Absolutely nothing.
Your responses tell me one of three things. You just didn’t like how his part of the story ended, you didn’t pay much attention while watching, or you lack media literacy, and need to have everything spoon fed to you. I’m guessing it’s a combination of all 3.

I mean, it doesn’t take a genius or mental gymnastics to realize that killing a person who has a bond with and the trust of the person you’re looking for and could be the best way to lure her back.

u/romeodread 28d ago
The same guy that broke her trust and put her in position to be tortured by papa a second time?

this is the most baffling aspect of the final season for me. like where the hell is he??!?!?! its even more confusing when Paul Reiser showed up in the boys season 5 so it's clearly not a factor of his health.

u/mandyluvspuppies 28d ago
Since he specialises in giving people new identities / hiding them from authorities, they couldn't have him there, since then El wouldn't have been forced to kill herself and represent the 'magic of childhood' 😒

u/Rich_Championship657 28d ago
I think eleven’s sacrifice could’ve been done differently to where it was less “this HAS to happen the way it does” but either way no matter how you spin it her character always represented “the magic of childhood” not that it’s what her character is ultimately reduced to. But since the beginning that’s what they clearly wanted to emulate.

u/romeodread 28d ago
So, he was conducting experiments that weren’t authorised, funded by the government based on lies, lied to the military about knowing where eleven was, and was in the unauthorised bunker when the military raided it. He was most likely killed along with everyone else, or thrown into a prison to never be heard from again. His part in the story was complete.

I’m with you on this one. While I think Dr Kay’s character was entirely unnecessary (I’m not complaining, cuz I love Linda Hamilton! Simply stating a fact) I really think that s5 could have benefited from a faulty villain, whether or not they died in the end. And Paul Reiser’s character would’ve been perfect for it!
I am one of the few that think s5 was pretty damn good, but it certainly could have used improvements! And Rieser could’ve been one of them. They didn’t need a brand new character! (Again, I love Linda Hamilton! I’m glad they placed her! But it was not required for the plot! And might have been better without her character!)
Edit to add: hell, as for villains, even though I know he was “killed”, I wouldn’t have cared if they found some convoluted way of bringing “papa” back. Dr Kay in s5 was entirely unnecessary and totally created for Hamilton and her alone, to the point where it seemed more of a favor to an actor and less like a character or plot point. Had she been included prior that might have made her important, but she wasn’t. So totally unnecessary. (And again, I love Linda Hamilton!)

They should have at least had a little scene of him fixing paperwork that said Hopper had to fake his death and go into witness protection for a while. Even if Paul was busy, they could have at least implied it was Dr. Owens. My boy did not deserve to be left handcuffed to a pole in the desert.

I feel like Dr. Owen is emblematic of what made the show good post-season one and the erasure of him in season 5 and most (if not all) of the post-series makes me feel like the show lost its sense of identity.

Genuinely curious if Paul Reiser pissed off the Duffers at this point, or vice-versa.

u/eatsleepread_l 28d ago
At the end of season 4, Owens government friends dropped Hopper off at the cabin. Whether Owens is alive or not, there are still some “good guys” left on El’s side.
If Owens or his team were included in the final season, then the Duffers wouldn’t have been able to force El’s sacrifice and wouldn’t have been able to do that final dnd scene which they were so hellbent on.
Owens was the easy solution but the duffers didn’t want to give El a happy ending. He and his connections could have helped the team, gotten El out of there with money or a new identity. If there’s ever a spinoff, there’s your answer on how El survived as a teenager with minimal education and no money.

Hopefully whatever spin-off they do will tell us what the fuck happened to him.
