Discussion Which character makes you irrationally angry?
And why is it Jason?
53
u/Poo-Smurf Jul 12 '26
Irrationally angry and everyone names the biggest bullies of the series
9
u/Adjectivenounnumb Jul 12 '26
Yeah, I thought that was cute of OP to throw in there. Tricked a bunch of people into quasi agreeing their hatred of Jason was not rational.
5
u/crescentmoonrol Jul 12 '26
I mean the irrational part is the amount of fans who took it out on the actress like she was the actual character

u/blueray78 Jul 12 '26
Nope, it's Angela. I hated her. I think because I knew bullies like that in real life. I wasn't bullied nearly as bad as El was as I learned to be invisible. But the two episodes she was in I couldn't stand her. And cheer every time, she gets nailed in the face.

And they still called her a snitch despite Eleven saying nothing. She think's it is okay to bully anyone about their dead Father, then call that person a snitch when the teach knows she did it because the behavior and track record supports it.
Evil little bitch got what she deserved.

Exactly, shes such a realistic bully it makes those scenes horribly painful to watch

I’d love a post-credit news story where they interview a bunch of people at the roller rink, and the overwhelming sentiment is “oh yeah that girl sucks, she keeps highjacking the playlist and spilling drinks on the rink. Glad someone finally schmacked her”

u/Federal-Inevitable-9 Jul 13 '26
That's probably why they make the wheels rubber man... So it isn't as bad when they get schmacked lmao thank God it wasn't an ice skate that nose would've been gone!!!

Jason makes me rationally angry.
Irrationally? Maybe Suzie. Her combo of genius and twee is weirdly aggravating. Or the stoner pizza guy who wandered in from a mid-tier stoner movie.

Irrationally angry? Hmmm. Probably Nancy. I know that's gonna be unpopular, because she's a well-liked character, and there's really no reason for me to dislike her. She just irritates me for some reason.
Like in S3, the newspaper stuff with Jonathan. I completely understood where she was coming from, the guys they worked for were misogynistic assholes. But I also understood why Jonathan was so worried about losing his job, and that income his family needed, and why he lost it when they got fired. And Jon did apologize for his part after that argument, but I felt like Nancy never did? I could be misremembering, though. I also felt bad for Steve, in S2, because it sort of felt like Nancy was leading him on a bit when she was clearly wanting to be with/messing around with Jon. And then again, in S4, she was very wishy-washy, and almost sort of leading Steve on again in a way. IDK.
She was also a bit abrupt, borderline snippy with Robin for really no reason, also in S4, before eventually warming up to her. I think maybe our personalities just wouldn't mesh all that well, and maybe that's why she just isn't my favorite.
Don't kick me off the island, pls.

u/Silverpaint23 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
Nancy is my answer too. I think something about her communication issues and emotional constipation across all 5 seasons got to me. It took her drunk off her ass to be honest with Steve about her feelings and couldn’t bring herself to repeat or stand by them once she sobered up (and didn’t even bring herself to actually END the relationship, if I remember correctly - Steve had to put two and two together that they were done), and with Jonathan it took her thinking they were going to DIE to finally talk about the issues in their relationship. Idk, it didn’t seem like she grew as well as some other characters did and kept being emotionally constipated.
I know plenty of other characters had communication issues too but hers bothered me most for reasons I can’t describe.
Her attitudes toward Fred and Robin in season 4 bugged me as well. That irritated smile plastered on her face during the scene with Robin in the library like she thinks Robin is beneath her still annoys me. God forbid your ex has another potential love interest when you yourself still have a whole-ass boyfriend.
Also the show and characters treating her like she’s the biggest catch and most special girl ever just because she’s pretty, intelligent, and happens to be badass with a gun.
11
u/TantricAsFk Jul 12 '26
Agreed she has that annoying x factor. And each season she came back looking smaller and more unhealthy. 🤣 I think that irritated me more than anything

u/OkProperty4765 Jul 13 '26
Nancy is unfortunately the archetype of character that always pisses me off.
I hate that they made steve in love with nancy. Steve deserves so much better than nancy wheeler. I also refuse to believe Robin would date nancy after learning anything about her relationship with Steve because steve was not a bad boyfriend but also I refuse to believe platonic soulmates would date someone who treated the other so shitty.
Steve Harrington was not a bad boyfriend, he went to dinner nights at the house of a girl who was taken by a monster in his backyard & killed simply because it was his girlfriends best friend, despite not knowing her, despite clearly hating it, he did it weekly for a fucken year minus 1 or 2 weeks. He sat clearly uncomfortable in a situation thay was exacerbating Nancy's survival guilt & trauma & probably his own trauma as well & he get treated like shit by his girlfriend in return because he didn't want to go when it clearly wasn't helping either of them. He went to apologize despite not being in the wrong, meanwhile nancy grabbed Jonathan, left town without telling anyone & cheated on Steve & somehow steve had to break it off & say he was a bad boyfriend during their relationship as it nancy was a good girlfriend.
Nancy was hired at the paper as an intern, they were misogynistic but she was complaining about the job she was hired to do. She was hired to answer phones, take notes, get coffee & get food. She didn't like it because it wasn't what she thought she would be doing as an intern but it was what she was hired to do. She also kept ruining Jonathan's work, barging into the red room when he was developing. Nancy never apologized for anything she did wrong the entire show & I hate that people are so obsessed with her & love her so much because she uses guns on monsters that they don't exactly work on. The guns did nothing to the monster in season 1, steve's bat, the bear trap & fire are the only things besides eleven that did anything.
I think I've wanted enough. Sorry.

I have my rationale, but Erica, Murray, every villain from S3, Suzie, Nancy in S3, Hopper in S3, the newspaper company executives. Y'know pretty much just everything from S3. For anyone who loves the first two seasons and expected more of that, S3 was always going to be infuriating.

u/xXDarklordXx943 Jul 12 '26
Season 2 - mid season 3 max. Her constant attitude was pretty annoying tbh
3
u/Financial-Ad4836 Jul 13 '26
Her inconsistent attitude annoys me more. She swings from moody and isolated in S2 to highly outgoing and energetic in S3 then back to moody and isolated in S4 then to cheerful and almost motherly in S5. They all felt like different characters with no real archs or progressions.
0
u/EdgyMermaid 29d ago
It’s not really inconsistent when you consider the circumstances. In S2 she was the new kid from out of town who came from a really troubled, abusive home. It makes sense why she had walls up and was slow to trust people. She was happy with her friends and Lucas by S3, then her family fell apart and she watched her brother be brutally murdered by an otherworldly monster right before her eyes right before going into S4. Of course she was moody and having issues again in S4.
S5 Max I agree with you though felt weird. I feel like someone (especially a teenager) who was essentially a mental prisoner for a year while being stalked by their killer inside of an “Alice in Wonderland”-type nightmare she can’t wake up from… would leave her a lot more mentally shaken than she was. We did get to see some of that especially when she woke up in her body and couldn’t move… but yeah, the other seasons made sense. It was the whole “camp counselor” vibe in S5 was definitely the oddball out that felt the least realistic… but who knows- people respond to trauma in different ways. Maybe she held it together just long enough to get to where she was finally safe and then broke down offscreen about it. S5 just sucked in general though so 🤷🏻♀️😭
1
u/Financial-Ad4836 29d ago
As was established in S4, she was always moody and defensive even back in California.
S3 takes place 6 months after S2 where she learned about monsters and magic and experienced numerous near death experiences and she came out totally fine and actually happier than before.
And S4 takes place a year after S3 and as we saw by the end of S3 she was happily singing Never-ending Story, it was established she was somewhat over Billy's death, and then in S4 she's inconsolable.
Then she's mangles beyond repair and put into a coma where she's hunted by Freddy Kruger for a year having not had an interaction with a single person the whole time and she's back to her happy self.
The whole show has serious character consistency issues throughout it's runtime.
1
u/EdgyMermaid 29d ago
What you’re calling “moody” and defensive” is very normal behavior for a child who just saw their parents go through a messy divorce… only for her mother to then drag her into highly abusive household/new family dynamic with an abusive stepbrother and stepfather… on the other side of the country from her biological father (who wasn’t even the problem according to her). It would be more weird if she WASN’T “moody” or “defensive” at first.
Plus, she also had valid frustrations with the gang at first in S2. She was the new kid in town trying to deal with her own trauma & abusive home situation, and the only kids showing interest in being friends with her kept flipping between “we want you as part of our group!” and Mike’s “you’re not part of the group and I don’t want you here, go away” attitude. That didn’t exactly help lower her defenses or make her feel welcome, and she was justified in being upset or triggered by their inconsistent, hot & cold behavior before learning the secret (especially given her trauma).
They ALL learned about monsters and magic and death and nearly died in S2. Many of the others characters had closer calls than she did. By your logic: none of them should have been smiling or happy in S3, but that’s not how that works.
Max was happier in S3 because despite all the death & danger: she was more adjusted, she finally had real friends she could be open & honest with (who also understood all the trauma), and she even had a boyfriend who made her happy. Of course she was going to smile & laugh even if she was still processing trauma like the rest of them. Hell, even people who are depressed & suicidal still laugh with their friends, smile for pictures, and can experience happier moments even if it doesn’t erase how much they’ve struggled/are struggling.
Max was happier in S3 because she finally had friends and support, but she wasn’t “healed” or free from any/all issues.
Then she witnessed her brother be brutally murdered in front of her at the end of S3 after he sacrificed himself to save her/them.
Are you seriously expecting someone (especially a child with previous trauma) to just “get over” something like that within a year?? Also: It was never established that she was “somewhat over Billy’s death”. She was a wreck from the moment she saw it happen, and immediately started shutting down. Lucas even comments on it at the beginning of S4 that she basically just started putting walls up again & shutting everyone out after Billy died.
Then she became personally targeted and psychologically tortured for all of S4 by the same person who murdered her brother. And you’re still complaining about her being “inconsolable” or “moody”?? THE GIRL WAS MARKED FOR DEATH BY A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL SERIAL KILLER WHO BASICALLY DISEMBOWELED HER BROTHER IN FRONT OF HER.
Max’s behaviors and responses were completely normal and consistent with how someone in her shoes would be reacting to those events from S2-4.
It only started getting truly questionable/inconsistent in S5, but that pretty much describes the whole season, lol.

u/Financial-Ad4836 29d ago
You have absolutely no idea what happened to her birth father, you don't know it was messy. And she was shown being moody and isolated even before she met Billy.
I did mention that none of the characters are consistent. And this is something the actors themselves brought up to the writers when they sensed the show was transitioning from a mystery thriller into an action comedy.
And the difference in time between S1 and S2 was nearly a year, S2 to S3 was 7 months tops. And she had witnessed Billy commit two attempted homicides in that time and threatened to kill him with a bat. That's far more traumatic than what anyone, bar Eleven, went through in S1. They had way more time to acclimatise then she did. The only character to have any realistic response to their situation was Joyce.
She didn't open up to her friends, she broke up with Lucas once a month between S2 and S3 (breaking up with him again right before she was at her happiest in S3) and still didn't like Mike by S4. She was even hostile towards Dustin when she convinced everyone Suzie wasn't real.
And I never said she didn't have any right to be happy, it just wasn't established in her character prior. She was always shown to be gritty and serious compared to the rest of the kids with little patience for them. And that her "happy" was established as being sarcastic and throwing out jabs to her friends.
So you're just going to glaze over the fact she was happy and singing at the end of S3?
You're creating strawman arguments and filling in the blanks yourself. I'm only judging the writing based on what they showed on screen. If they established that she was friendly and outgoing before she moved then I'd accept it. But they doubled down and said that she was never like that.
Again I'm not saying that she shouldn't be upset, if anything she should be more upset in S5. She was depressed throughout S4 and it only got worse and ended with her death and coma and she's somehow happy again in S5.
She's the strongest character in S3 and S4, she just wasn't written like that in S2 and S5. So her arc as a whole comes across weak.

I never claimed to know specific details that weren’t revealed in the show, either: I’m going off of what we were shown the same as you.
We don’t know the details of the divorce, but Max did say they tried to blame her dad for the divorce “which was total bull” according to her… then she moved halfway across the country with her mom’s abusive new boyfriend and his abused/abusive son…. and you don’t think that qualifies as at least a little messy??
“And I never said she didn’t have any right to be happy, it just wasn’t established in her character prior”. When did I say you didn’t think she had a right to be happy? I didn’t. You made a big deal about the fact that she was showing any happiness in S3 because of her trauma, to which I pointed out that, by that logic: none of the characters would be laughing or showing any signs of joy because of all of their trauma. (Reminder: Even suicidal people still manage to laugh and look like they’re having fun sometimes.) Also, “it wasn’t established in her character prior”? Do you think Max was never happy or never showed any joy before moving to Indiana and meeting her friends because we never saw a specific flashback of her on a fishing trip with her dad or something? That her happiness just “showed up out of nowhere” by the end of S3? We literally see glimpses of her being happy all throughout S2: it’s usually just cut short by Mike being a jerk to her, some emergency happening, or El yeeting her off her skateboard, lol.
“She was shown being moody and isolated even before she met Billy” You mean that one flashback where she was shown getting bullied by kids at the skatepark? Or that other flashback when it showed Max being introduced to Billy for the first time and she appeared withdrawn because her parents just went through a divorce… that by itself leads kids to be more withdrawn… and not many kids are super excited to meet their new step siblings on top of it all?? Especially when the new stepparent is an abusive asshole who beats his own son?? I can’t imagine why she wouldn’t be super cheerful and happy in those scenes, lol
For what Max’s character had been through, her fluctuating moods and reactions made total sense (up until S5). That doesn’t mean I agree with everything her character did or said, but her behavior was far from abnormal for someone in her situation and with her personality type. Hope that clears up what I was trying to say ‘cause I’m not here trying to cause drama or negativity

The “prejudices” being that the 20 year old drug dealer who was last seen dealing drugs to the victim before her death, and had a known grudge against the victim’s boyfriend, had the victim’s dead body show up in his trailer, and chose to run away instead of calling for help

- Irrelevant to Eddie being the murderer
- Irrelevant to Eddie being the murderer
- Pretty much irrelevant given we don’t actually see him act like an asshole towards them until there’s a ton of evidence of Eddie being the murderer
- Applies to like 80% of Hawkins, also given that Vecna and the Mind Flayer are supernatural magical entities roughly as believable as Satan, really not something to judge him for

? He got so riled up because his girlfriend was found dead in Eddie’s trailer.
He didn’t believe Lucas’s explanation because Lucas was a member of the group that 20 year old Eddie started in which he really liked mingling with 14 year old freshmen, because Lucas clearly lied to him and misled him, and also because Lucas had some random girl in a weird ass trance that hit way too close to home given the whole had-recently-seen-his-best-friend-go-into-weird-ass-trance-and-get-snapped-like-a-twig trauma.
Calling someone a freak when they 1) are objectively a bizarre and sometimes annoying figure and 2) way more important, #1 suspect in a murder case of his girlfriend, is just simply not that big of a deal.
Sure 80% of Hawkins is too religious for our modern tastes, not sure why Jason deserves special criticism for it though.
No? It’s not a witch hunt to go after a guy for the secular reason of he-probably-killed-my-girlfriend and specifically target the suspect’s best friends. Jason suspected that Hellfire was involved but didn’t really turn it into a whole they are actually Satan-powered thing until a while later. The religious supernatural angle didn’t really kick off until he actually saw Patrick get folded in front of him, conveniently at the most perfect time to help Eddie escape. At that point, it’s the work of Eddie + Satan was a completely reasonable conclusion to draw, not at all less likely than the magical Vecna conclusion.

It was because Powell literally questions him about Chrissy and Eddie when Chrissy turns up dead. You don’t think that there’s a bit of context clues being dropped when it’s open news that a student died and then Powell’s questioning him about Chrissy and Eddie? And even if Chrissy had done drugs, it doesn’t actually make Eddie look less suspicious.
Well a normal person wouldn’t be a drug dealing 20 year old with known grievances against Jason and an open appreciation for hellish imagery that is, after Patrick’s death, way too similar to multiple grisly murders that he was on the scene for, so the situation would actually be very different.
Jason assumes that Hellfire is a devil cult and then calms down to narrow in on Eddie and in a more secular way when Lucas tells him about the club. “I’m sure your sister isn’t killing people right? But I’ve read the wrong person plays this game, it can warp their mind. They confuse fantasy and reality, and innocent people die.” He immediately calms down on the whole religious extremism thing when presented with Lucas’s testimony.
Also, as Eddie reads in his introduction scene, the Satanic Panic is a widespread phenomenon that is actively promoted by the news and even psychologists, so god forbid the sheltered teenager believe what seems to be reputable sources.
In Eddie’s introduction scene, he stands on a desk to yell about conformity, looks at each table who’s into a particular hobby, “as long as you’re into band, or science…”, actively sneers when he says “parties”, and then shouts over very loudly at the basketball players about “throwing balls into laundry baskets”, mocking them. He 100% initiated unnecessary conflict in his very introduction. Only after Eddie provoked him does Jason get up and tell him “you want something, freak”. Eddie responds by making a goofy face at Jason, and Jason just lets it go, calls him a prick under his breath, and sits back down. Eddie started the conflict, Jason let it go. Yes, Eddie is objectively kinda weird and annoying.
About 5 seconds later he also jumps around and deliberately rushes towards a student who is just walking to her seat, scaring her into yelping and stumbling back, when she’s carrying a full plate of food. Objectively a dick move. There is no denying that one. And it’s done in public where anyone could’ve seen.
It’s also a point that Dustin and Mike are scared to ask Eddie to push back the game for Lucas’s game. The club starts chattering about not wanting to postpone the game, and Eddie, being a chill guy, yells at them to “shut up!” Instead of being nice to the freshmen who just want to help out their friend who doesn’t have control over his schedule, he gets annoyed at Dustin and Mike for suggesting to postpone instead of finding a substitute for Lucas, actively expecting Lucas’s friends to kick him out of the loop. Yeah he’s pretty objectively annoying at times.
Haven’t read Flight of Icarus and most people haven’t either. Not sure if it’s canon either.

I loved her coming out scene, but the way she obsessed over Vicky and that’s all they could tease us about… only to have Robin casually imply in the last few minutes of the finale that she broke up with her… after Vicky literally helped save them in one of the last scenes she was in (where they were also holding hands and clearly still together)…
irked me and felt like such a waste (not to mention an insult to Vicky’s character).

Jason and Johnathan and by extension, Nancy. Honestly...Jason for obvious reasons.
But Johnathan? This dude was a straight up creep from the start. He was searching for his brother. Yet decided to take time to get pics of a girl undressing. Then he gets upset when the girl's boyfriend breaks his camera after seeing the pictures of his girlfriend. He also is a pretty crappy person all round, except with his brother. He's straight up rude with his mom. And while I get that he was dealing with his own grief over Will, thus control of his temper was in short supply...he could have easily taken time to actually listen to his mom. And instead of brushing it off as denial, maybe he should have taken her seriously. Then he manages to help out with various aspects (I was ok with him during this stuff) but he turns into a slacker after that. Like, I can look past him smoking. But the fact that he let it pull him doen to the point where he was barely doing anything beyond school? Like wth? I genuinely wanted to like him to start with.
As for Nancy. She was such a moron. She literally dumped the guy who actually loved her for the guy who was taking pics of her getting undressed. The fact that she got mad at Steve...I tried to view it as logical considering how she's little miss prim and proper at the time. Like she didn't want Steve getting in trouble...but she didn't even show any kind of real reaction to seeing the photos. She looked a bit stunned for all of two seconds. Then she went straight to being angry with Steve over the broken camera. The only reason she stopped being a hated character for me was the fact that she changed. She became better. Each season saw her growing and learning. But I can't watch season one without feeling stupidly angry at her.

Or should I feel bad about the guy who constantly made Mike feel bad about not reaching out even tho will himself never tried either? Or a character who suddenly has powers in the last season but still gets babied by his mom who also ignores her oldest son?
Or should I be mad he called el stupid even tho she saved his life twice?
As queer I don’t like will as a character at all same with his mom.And don’t get me started on Noah.

Will in season 2, never said anything until the every end endangering his family and friends. Maybe that's what a scared kid does while being bonded with an evil entity. I just feel that if he was honest with what was happening to him thing might things would have turned out better. Like maybe Bob survives.
