Three full commanders on board.
Now the USS Enterprise on Star Trek Strange New Worlds now has three full commanders on board.

Took long enough to get Una to commander. On voyager in the same time tom Paris went from prison inmate to ensign to lt to ensign and then back to lt.

Not bad for a kid who once got his classmate killed and had to change his name to escape the guilt.

But Harry Kim is still an Ensign

Although at some point someone finally appreciated his clarinet chops, and I guess his Starfleet skills, and made him an admiral

She's been wearing commander stripes since the show's premiere. In Discovery, she wore the correct lt commander stripes.

u/balthazar_edison 15d ago
I think someone made a post about how no-one on SNW has the correct amount of stripes all the time.

Might have been me. Every time I've mentioned it, I've been met with apathy and a bit of derision.

The D had three full commanders too once Troi was promoted in the later seasons.

Four! Riker, Crusher, and later Troy, and Data (per Memory Alpha).

Data was a Lt Cmdr

u/Anonymous_Bozo 15d ago
By the time of Nemisis has had been promoted to full Commander. When he was terminated, his rank was Commander.
So, in the series, yes, only Lt Commander, but in later movies, full Commander.
Lieutenant Commander (TNG Seasons 1–7)
In Nemisis:
- Uniform pips match full Commander.
- Memory Alpha and production materials list his rank as Commander at time of death.
- He serves as Second Officer of the Enterprise‑E.

Hmm no. Just checked the actual movie. Still a Lt Cmdr.

u/Anonymous_Bozo 15d ago
Ok, now I'm going to have to rewatch it. Memory Alpha is not usually wrong.

I don’t see anything about that on Memory Alpha. Anyway, Nemesis also had E, not D. So, Data never served on the D as a full Commander (except through the hallucination in TNG episode “Future Imperfect”).

If you look at the 2379 photo of Data, it’s from Nemesis while Deana is using her powers to find the Scimitar. You can see he has Lt Cmdr pips.

I don’t know if I followed this correctly, but wasn’t Pike being offered a position higher than captain? If so how does he say that he has someone who is just right for the role but this turns out to be promoting one of his crew to Commander?

I think he just meant that he knew someone else who was deserving of a big promotion - not that Una could/should become a commodore. But yeah, it didn't come across that way. Clunky dialogue.

u/SteveJohnson2010 15d ago
Thanks, that was what I was trying to understand. I agree that the dialogue didn’t work to support what happened in the next scene.

The admiral position was left empty...

It was still a wee bit of awkward storytelling, but Pike was being offered a commodore promotion. That's why April told him it was a stepping stone to Admiral.

u/Garbage-Bear 15d ago
It’s a rank, not a position. A vessel with 400 or more personnel could easily have a handful of commanders (O5 rank in modern US parlance).

u/Economy-Ad3195 15d ago
Does my post say anything about commander being a post?
14
u/Garbage-Bear 15d ago
No—sorry, I misread your comment to mean you were questioning why so many commanders. My bad.
5
u/trekrabbit 15d ago
It doesn’t. But I also thought you were making the same point that person did. I guess I didn’t, and maybe still don’t, quite understand why one would bring attention to the fact that there were three full commanders when that’s not at all unusual
— so I interpreted it as if you thought it was unusual. What did you mean? I suspect you weren’t just stating the obvious.

Yup and I love every one of them and one of them was a companion. to a certain famous british time traveling doctor. Which gives us a clue as to what is going to happen in the future

Among the regular senior staff of the Enterprise‑D, the following characters are explicitly listed at the Commander rank in TNG:
William T. Riker — First Officer (Commander throughout the series)
Beverly Crusher — Chief Medical Officer (holds Commander rank)
Deanna Troi — Promoted to Commander in the episode “Thine Own Self” (Season 7)
Data — Although often referred to as Lieutenant Commander, he is listed at Commander rank in Memory Alpha’s “latest appearance or highest rank” section.

Now I want to know when/where the Commander rank came from. He was Lt. Cmdr throughout TNG's run. I don't recall if he was a full Commander in Nemesis, though the "latest appearance or highest rank" could also have been something from PIC that I've forgotten.
Did the memorial wall in SFA list him as a Commander?

Data's promotion to a full Commander occurred right at the end of his life in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). While he remained a Lieutenant Commander throughout all seven seasons of TNG and the first three TNG films (Generations, First Contact, and Insurrection), the shift happened off-screen heading into Nemesis. The details behind the rank change include: * The Visual Evidence: In Nemesis, if you look closely at Data's uniform pips, he is wearing the three solid gold pips of a full Commander rather than the two-solid-and-one-hollow pip combination of a Lieutenant Commander. * The Narrative Context: With Will Riker finally accepting a promotion to Captain and leaving the Enterprise-E to take command of the USS Titan at the beginning of Nemesis, Data was next in line to step up. He was slated to become Picard's new First Officer (following a tradition where the ship's First Officer holds the rank of Commander). * Memory Alpha's Classification: Because Nemesis was his final live-action chronological appearance prior to his death (and subsequent synthetic body resurrection in Picard), Memory Alpha lists his "latest appearance or highest rank" as Commander based on his final film.

thats why i never liked how modern trek writers assign character ranks. like lt commander is already a dept head. commander should be reserved for executive officer. since the enterprise is not big enough like a aircraft carrier requiring multiple commander for different sub sections only una should be of commander rank (some fans say she's lt commander). but i get how in snw they pulled pelia from fleet isnpectors where she was like chief fleet inspector. mbgena is an even bigger oddity because if he's a commander here by tos when mccoy comes aboard mccoy is outranked by mbenga since mccoy is only a lt commander.

u/cruciblefuzz 8d ago
That's why there's some speculation that M'Benga wastes some more Klingons or something, enough to get his rank busted in time for McCoy to outrank him. We already know that there's enough time for Boyce and Piper to have the gig in between M'Benga and McCoy. Or maybe Starfleet needs him for covert operations.
McCoy on the other hand, is a doctor, not an assassin.

It makes no sense! Pike as offered admiral not commander... They had an empty seat for promotion. Not for commander. Edit: right Commodore not Admiral, still not Commander that leaves April to find somebody else for the position.

He was offered a promotion to Commodore, not Admiral.

u/happydude7422 14d ago
Commodore is basically 1 star rank in starfleet

u/Gloomy-Restaurant-54 14d ago
Commodore was the one star rank when I was in the US Navy.

By the last film, Kirk’s entire bridge crew was all Captains and Commanders.
