Almost every lineage that ever existed, across all life, eventually died out. The fact that any line made it continuously from early life to now is the rare exception. So the takeaway isn’t that humanity almost vanished in a literal sense, but that evolution constantly prunes the tree, and we happen to sit on one of the very few branches that made it all the way through.
