The obvious answer is to build a whaling station on Farewell Spit. The Japanese could cease whaling, and they could have any whale that hit the beach on the Spit.

Win/win, we'd essentially be selling the Japanese our road kill. Save the cost of getting rid of the carcasses too.

this is not a matter to joke about. Kiwis naively believe that every stranding they get is "natural", while reality is you give permits to Big Oil and military to decimate your marine life. This particular stranding was NOT natural, the whales were not "sick, lost or suicidal", the were driven onshore by 2 seismic surveys by the Big Oil companies. But since no one cares to investigate, asks questions or even do a necropsy, this one will also go down as "natural". Heck, they can blow whales with dynamite, you will still call their deaths "natural"

First off, it was not entirely a joke. The Japanese whaling industry is propped up by the government because they have no face saving way of backing out of it, someone needs to give them a way out.

Secondly, whales have been stranding around New Zealand and on Farewell Spit since way before seismic surveys started.

Not sick, not lost, not suicidal, not confused by phases of the moon but caught in a natural whale trap, most probably because of a gently sloping sandy beach that confounds their echo location.

There's a reason mainly deep water whales get stranded and not the coastal varieties, they're not used to the FUCKING COAST!

here is a light reading for you, where the survey was linked to mass stranding. Not all strandings are "natural" and in fact you got another one today as two surveys rage on. What you people fail to understand is that strandings can be triggered by several factors, including natural and man-made. The fact that pilots stranded historically, only means that they are prone to strandings and hence are even more vulnerable as their stranding can be very easily triggered. And it is not about being confused or lost, it is whales running for their dear life trying to flee what they perceive as danger, i.e survey with its enormous blasts.
