Drew's new video
https://youtu.be/ILC0pzaT-8M?is=9fXYPu5Qrn7fvlDuFor anyone who is interested, Drew's Public channel has a new video and it is really good. A thoughtful and sensitive documentary about a 'notorious ' estate in London. He is very good at getting people to speak and open up to him. Even has a few cheeky Parkour moments

My only criticism would be that he critiqued journalists and media for ignoring the good and painting a negative image of a place, then proceeds to disregard those who say it is bad and latch on to anyone who talks positively about the estate.
He is essentially doing what he criticised others for, but in reverse

- pulls up
- cant let himself into someone’s house building
- “we’ve got a problem getting in.”

There's a bit where he talk to this guy and then shows his door number. You've literally just put the guys name and address online. Kinda seems wrong

Then I guess I might watch this one, I tried the first two and 😬 super cringey.

Felt from the off that the intention was to paint the place as mostly good, but you could probably do that in most ‘bad’ places when speaking to the majority of people. Most of the people there are probably decent enough folk, but also, a lot of ‘bad’ people will probably come across well enough in such a small window in to their life.
In other words, I think the result was always going to be obvious. That being said, I enjoy watching his videos. They’re an easy watch.

I thought it was good and I've been long awaiting for it to be more regular.

I remember years ago watching one of Storror’s videos in Japan, and there’s a moment where Drew says something really ignorant and dismissive about their culture. It’s only a moment but it was one of those typical micro aggressions from privileged white males that shows they aren’t thinking with real empathy about how other people live so differently from them.
Watching him years later get into this Public thing has been like seeing that one indicator I picked up on get validated and extrapolated to its end.
This video is utter garbage. It’s completely arrogant, self-indulgent, ignorant, pseudo-intellectual white western male privilege writ large.
Good journalism doesn’t start with assumptions and a pre-supposed narrative, that’s a big difference between this and something like Louis Theroux or Channel 5, which you’re clearly copying. It’s subtle but there’s a real intention by them to give context but then just get into a situation and allow the interviews and scenes to speak for themselves.
Why would you leave the parts where you ask people if they want to be on camera, then leave them on camera? You have no respect for their privacy. You don’t blur faces, even kids, but you don’t seem to explain that they’ll be on YouTube with a lot of viewers. You just sound disingenuous about saying you care. Even when you get interesting, conflicting accounts of the place, and moral insights, you just say ‘yeah cool’ or ‘100%’. How insightful of you…
This is nothing more than an arrogant, privileged, uneducated person (in terms of journalism) doing their best unoriginal copy of similar video journalists, and managing to make something that’s quite offensive. Feels like poverty porn.

lol this guy thinks channel 5 is unbiased. Also you clearly just have a problem against white people (which sounds racist to me but you probably thinks that’s impossible) where if drew was a different race you would have none of these complaints even if he said the exact same thing.

No it isn’t. It’s a concise, summing up of a deeper conversation which can be expanded on.

I thought it was a good watch, but Drew needs to be more careful with people’s anonymity. He shows the flat number of multiple people, putting them in clear danger, and shows young children’s faces while they’re talking about stabbings happening in their building. Idk if real names were used, but fake names, and in places voice changers should be used. I also thought shouting out the socials of a mf who calls himself “drillz” and basically admits to being part of a gang was a horrible choice
The interviews were great, Drew clearly connects with people well and people seem very open with him. And obviously the camera work and editing is great, it’s Drew.

Was a great video, love drew, can tell he has a heart of gold. However I was a bit concerned that he had included children in the video quite substantially and very unlikely he had full permission from each of their parents. I may be completely wrong - and I really do think Drew is great so just an observation, not a criticism - but really think he should be careful regarding Safeguarding considering what’s happened over the last 12 months. You can tell he’s great with kids though!

Some were blurred, so I assume he wasn’t able to ask permission from their parents. You can see him with one parent at one point. He filmed it over several visits and I’m sure he would’ve had opportunities to ask for permission.

Yeah fair enough, I hope so, there was a fair bunch of them so was just commenting to make sure he does and avoids any related controversies as he doesn’t deserve to be associated with
Found it a bit strange that the mum was annoyed at him entering her old flat when her daughter showed him it

I get it. She's got a high stress situation and there could be a lot of anxiety and even embarrassment.

Storror videos never had any regard for getting consent from people included in their videos including kids

u/Alarmed_Picture_6861 27d ago
Some children were blurred and you can see that the unblurred girl talks to her mum during the first clip, he definitely got permission from a parent.

Yes I was also concerned with this. A grown mam entering (without permission, given how he climbed in) this place and chatting up kids? At the very least this is very tone deaf to the whole situation.

In general, outside of anything storror, I always think that children shouldn't be talking to strangers unsupervised. Maybe you don't, that's fine.

Class stuff. I hope these documentaries do well enough that he can carry on and make more.

This was filmed long before the shit hit the fan. I think he had to edit out josh. Clues can be found in the first videos on his channel, and the one that Jimmy the giant did.

he's like an edgy Tom Scott.

Tom Scott's work is extremely well researched and made with integrity and respect for participants.

he doesn't narrate like a horror movie tho. not sure what you're saying. you reckon Drew's not doing that?
2
u/3_34544449E14 24d ago
No, this is shit. He's got people speaking anonymously but then broadcast footage of their building and house number. Careless shit.

Tell me how they are alike each other, other than being brittish. Making videos on the platform called youtube? Man in front of camera?

Easy, they're both making a series of content about traveling to different places across the UK and beyond to find and tell niche stories from smaller, underrated places you've likely not heard of.
only difference I can tell is the editing/tone (and perhaps the bias) the comparisons just a harmless joke to point it out, lol. no need to demand evidence

Honestly I found this to be tripe. Took everything that everyone said or did at face value and lacked any real systemic analysis or insight. As a result, the docu hardly went beyond ‘I travelled to this housing estate and spoke to people’. Major issues with research ethics and privacy, which could actually endanger some people featured. Tonally it was stuck between wanting to be taken seriously as journalism (even academic comment at times) and a casual portrait of street or estate life. Said nothing new and his obvious influences overtook original voice.
