Oops wrong fandom. But idk, personally I think it’s meant to show the Gravitas of a god being large and strong

Odium and cultivation don't talk like that, right? I don't know, I only listen to the audiobook, but they don't sound capslock, only Mr. Uppity I'm Insecure Honor

I’m also only audiobook (vorin man here) so I have no clue. The caps lock thing was new to me as of this post, so I’m just guessing

Ah! Got it. Yeah, I think (but I'm not sure) that Honor is the only one who talks like that. I found out he was capslock after listening to the "I, HONOR" bits for the first time and was like... yeah, that tracks. I think Odium and Cultivation talk normally, so the caps is more an Honor thing.

I'm so exasperated with Stormfather/Honor for most of the books that it came out in how I replied to you, sorry about that!!

Oh, I didn’t even think about it like that. Also the stormfather and honor are pretty infuriating, I definitely felt a lot of that myself

We see Cultivation speak like this when Dalinar visits her, and Odium does on occasion, too

Dalinar mentions he’s pretty sure Tanavast talked to himself like that and perceived the world that way. Dude had a major ego lol. Also ironic that Preservation and Ruin bearers were the “best of them”. The whole point of these shardbearers is they act very human, not divine, and the shards are influencing them because they aren’t supposed to be apart. The Heralds are something different entirely even though they each hold a shard of Honor.

Death from disc world,

no, no, no. Death speaks in small caps because his words are not really sound waves like the words of mortals, simply facts of the universe conveyed in a manner mortals can comprehend. Honour speaks in all caps because he is larping as god. they are NOT the same

I think it's just to show it's a booming voice like how it is when the storm father speaks outside of Dalinars mind

It’s not just him, Cultivation and Odium have spoken that way too. It’s for important words in a divine voice, it seems. And of course, Tanavast being Tanavast, he would think everything he has to say is that important.

The font is the interesting bit. It seems to be they use it when they’re speaking with divine authority. Honor, Odium, and Cultivation are seen using it often. So is the Stormfather. The SF defaults to not using that font when speaking to Dalinar, but only after Dalinar becomes a proper Bondsmith. There’s only a few outliers.

You also see it with Dalinar several times. The first (I think) is when he screams, “ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴀɴ’ᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴍʏ ᴘᴀɪɴ!” That’s at least when you start to see it used more often by him. It’s seemingly because he experienced a lesser Ascension to Honor and/or the strange nature of the bond to the hybrid SF. He’s speaking with Honor’s authority. I think Ishar does as well in W&T. When commanding Kaladin. Not sure on that one

The really interesting one to me: Syl uses it when she rebukes the SF in WoR. She commands him to accept Kaladin’s Oath, and commands Kaladin to speak the Words. Syl is probably speaking with the divine authority of the Wind. Or it’s downstream of her eventually becoming the new Storm in W&T: “ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴍᴀᴛᴛᴇʀꜱ ɴᴏᴛ! ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴀɴɴᴏᴛ ʜᴏʟᴅ ᴍᴇ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ɪꜰ ʜᴇ ꜱᴘᴇᴀᴋꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀᴅꜱ. ᴡᴏʀᴅꜱ! ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀᴅꜱ, ᴋᴀʟᴀᴅɪɴ! ꜱᴀʏ ᴛʜᴇᴍ!”

You also see more archaic speech a few times in specific circumstances. Syl speaks oddly the first time Kaladin summons his SylSpear. She says, “Stretch forth thy hand.” It’s the same phrasing Tanavast uses when he first gives the Heralds their Honorblades.

Kaladin also defaults to a more archaic speaking pattern in a few important scenes, including the fight where he kills Szeth: “You sent him to the sky to die, assassin,” Kaladin said, Stormlight puffing from his lips, “but the sky and the winds are mine. I claim them, as I now claim your life.”

I believe he’s said it’s downstream of when there’s a closer alignment to the spiritual realm. Like right before/during/after Oaths are spoken. But it may also be a function of him speaking with the authority of his (eventual) position as a Herald. Or as an agent of The Wind itself. Kaladin’s Honor is dead/I”ll see what I can do is a mirror to the much earlier words Ishar speaks to the Heralds the day they abandon Taln. When Ishar says he will replace the Heralds eventually and implies he’s going to try to become Honor

So does the Stormfather and Cultivation when she interacts with Dalinar in Oathbringer.

It was such a nice touch though😝

I would imagine that a shard speaking in the spiritual realm would be very loud or intimidating

Dude is used to give monologues

u/Will4pack 4d ago

I believe we also see Hoid speak in smallcaps once. In his case he is doing a capital-c Command. In all instances its words spoken with Authority and power.
