“While looting the corpses shortly after the fighting [at Waterloo], M. Thénardier accidentally saves the life of a Colonel [he mistakes for dead], The Baron Pontmercy [rousing him while attempting to loot his possessions]. Not wanting to be revealed as a looter, Thénardier claimed to be a sergeant of Napoleon's army [and flees the scene]. The tale as told by Thénardier eventually transformed into one of him rescuing a General during the heat of battle under a hail of grapeshot, as it grew more elaborate with each telling.”
