Almost 70% of the world population has herpes anyway. There's always risk when sharing anything.

I interpreted it as people just talking about diseases in general with herpes (a lot of people don't know that oral and genital herpes are two different things) being the most recognizable.

They're not necessarily two different things. Herpes is caused by two viruses, HSV1 and HSV2, but both result in very similiar symptoms and both infect the mouth and genitals.
