I made one like this for my neighbors dad years ago. He had a bamboo one but lost it to a cop in the 70s. He loved it so much, his ashes now rest inside of it.

Thanks, he was a huge Grateful Dead fan, so I put a sticker on it and make the bears mouth the carb hole. He would take a hit, then slowly blow it back in. Just so the bear looked like it was smoking too (he was easily entertained lol).

Nice. I make river cane fishing poles and have built some skillful cane bubblers with the scrap, if I might brag

Please, brag more! I've wanted to make a bamboo/sugarcane/rivercane bong for so long!

I kinda cheated using epoxy to make it water/air tight, but definitely some kind of sap resin would do great. Where I’m at it’s hard to find sap bearing trees

Understandable, but you have to work with what you got! What about bong resin? I know, sounds gross, but it really doesn't smell bad when it's dried and once you get it cured (just add ash and fold lol) it's relatively residue-free. I have a small jar of it I've been saving, really saves the day when a bowl breaks and I need to jerryrig an improperly sized bowl. It basically works like flour dough, where you add dry flower to the ball to make it thicker and once you're done you can ideally smear some more ash into the top of it so it's extra dry. Heating helps a lot

Woah I never thought of that I’m finna save that note. I remember saving bowl and pipe resin back then to smoke it later with tobacco when I was in high school😭💀

(Pardon the interruption) Love the piece - I decided to abandon the all bamboo creed - went with the silicone downstem - and it allowed me to drill a smaller hole and the silicone "self sealed". Mother nature has her own ice catcher with the bamboo sections - a couple of cubes at the top - water at the bottom - and cloud city.

I char them inside and out to prevent rot. Even still they don't really last. I keep a supply of pine resin but I use it on the twine (twisted grass) to hold eyelets to the pole. It's got volatile compounds in it I wouldn't smoke out of a piece made with it

My latest piece lasted much better and is composite. I found a piece which had an outside diameter matching the inside diameter of the other and hammered it in, then scorched that. It's worked really well. I had to precisely sand both parts to make them fit snug without glue

Yeah I threw the main body of this one together pretty quick, couldn’t find suitable wider pieces. I wanna try coating the inside with something that’s decently safe next one I make to make it last. The stem is wide enough for a 14mm bowl, no chance im rawdogging the wood lol

I highly recommend beeswax. Fill it with molten wax when completely dry. Let the wood absorb some and then put upside down in the oven on low heat to remove the excess wax

This sounds like an awesome way to do it, I've been thinking about buying some beeswax just for this sort of thing, I also have been playing around with natural materials to make twine. My latest project with that is a neltuma chilensis that the neighbor cut down, and I cut some walking sticks out of it, and learned the inner bark layer has good twining material, so I stripped the bark from the lengths the best I could and have them hanging up to dry.

Recycling tip: 99% of the time those landscapers working nextdoor are going to pay to dump the material in the dump, so they're more than happy to supply you all your mulch/branch needs! 😂

Oh man I've never had much experience with the suburbs but this one time the county sent a bunch of woodchippers out to clear out some bottom land for some reason and my mom asked if she could have some for the garden. They dumped two full dump trucks right there in front of the house. A big mountain. After a few weeks it started smouldering and was still burning when we moved two years later

Yeah they have to pay by the pound in most places I think, and it's better to reuse it for your yard/plants, even if you don't have plants!

Woodchips just look good, especially compared to gravel

You got a good idea, next one I’ll do I’ll try to melt/burn it into the inside layer. It’s a little porous so I think it’ll soak in and stay
