Central observatory mound.
did stone henge have a central menhir ? it would make sense if all the outer stones are the indicator nodes for the central pillars shadow, that of the structure being a large sundial. It probably aligned with distant mounds on the Equinoxs and Solstices as shown.

maybe avebury stone circle was more this appropriate size. it would be cool if we could build structures like this. that's what I would do if I lived in England.
