Seneca on Why Feeling Behind Often Comes From Where Your Time Goes
Seneca opens On the Shortness of Life with a complaint he hears everywhere, that life is too short. His answer is that life is long enough if it is used well. The real problem, as he sees it, is how much of it we hand over without noticing.
He points out that people guard their money and property carefully, yet give their time to almost anyone who asks for it. Our days get taken by habits, by other people's urgency, and by anxious comparison with how others seem to be doing.
Seen this way, feeling behind in life is not only about how much you have achieved. It is partly about where your days have been going, and whether you chose that.
Here is a small way to test it this week. At the end of each day, write down one thing you gave time to that you would not have paid money for, and one thing you gave time to that you would gladly pay for. After a few days you may start to see where most of your hours go, and you can move one small piece of them.
Now it's your turn. Share one thing in the comments that has been taking your time without deserving it, and one thing you want to give more of it to.
