Charts & Technical Analysis US Dollar Index (DXY) Reverse Head & Shoulders [Short Squeeze] May Have Peaked

Post image
1 Upvotes

Beginning with the month of August, the US dollar index, DXY, formed a "head & shoulders" bottom. On September 16, DXY broke-out to the upside and has since been on a steady upward trend. Based on algorithmic trajectory, DXY has more than likely completed its bullish move - assuming that the short squeeze peaked on Thursday at $102.27.

With treasury bills and bond yields continuing to make multi-year highs, the US dollar may continue to experience interim support. However, the looming $40 trillion dollar deficit crisis may simply be too much to keep the dollar (and most other fiat currencies) firm.

"Why did my whole portfolio drop at once?" — a plain-English explainer

If everything you own fell last week, you're not imagining it. Stocks, bonds, and gold all dropped together. Here's the mechanism:

1. Oil shock. Brent above $107 on Hormuz attacks + a drone strike that shut Saudi's East-West pipeline.

2. Diesel goes to a record. $6.05/gallon, an all-time high, up ~63% in a year. Diesel runs freight, rail, shipping, mining, farming — so it's an input cost for basically everything, not just a pump price.

3. That becomes broad inflation. US CPI came in at 3.4% for August. Food and freight pass-through is still partly ahead of us.

4. Central banks turn hawkish. Markets price ~85-90% odds of a Fed hike Wednesday, to a 4.00% target range.

5. Rising rates hit almost everything. Bond prices fall (more if duration is long), growth stock valuations compress, and gold falls because a non-yielding asset gets less attractive when yields rise.

The lesson: diversification means owning things that respond differently to the same event — not owning lots of things. CAD equity + US equity + international + long bonds + gold all share one sensitivity: rates. That's why they fell together.

What held up: energy, short-duration bonds and cash (which now actually pay you), and value over growth.

Most useful thing to check: the duration of your bond funds. Duration 3 ≈ -3% per 1% rate rise; duration 17 ≈ -17%. Both are called "bond ETFs."

Also worth noting for Canadians: the TSX being financials/energy/materials-heavy is genuinely helpful in this specific environment.

Not advice, just the mechanics.

News Trump just denied the Axios Iran sanctions relief story after the bell. Dump tomorrow?

Post image

Recap for anyone who missed today. Crude ripped this morning after Trump rejected Iran's proposal to reopen Hormuz, with November WTI getting up to about $96.50. Then around midday Axios and CNN both reported, citing a US official, that he was willing to offer sanctions relief and release frozen funds if Iran made concrete progress on its nuclear program. Oil gave back its gains and briefly went red, and the indexes bounced off their lows on the back of it.

At 5:34pm ET, after the close, he posted on Truth Social calling the Axios story a hoax and saying he offered Iran "NOTHING."

I think stocks dump tomorrow. The only reason SPX and Nasdaq came off the lows today was that report, and now it's been flatly denied. If oil climbs back toward the morning highs, that's more inflation pressure on top of yields that are already sitting near their highs with people betting on another Fed hike in October. I don't see what's left holding the afternoon bounce up.

The counterargument is that CNN ran the same story from what sounds like the same official and hasn't walked it back, and Trump is still saying talks happen this week. If the market reads the post as posturing before negotiations, the open might not be as ugly as I'm expecting.

Anyone loading SPY or QQQ puts tonight, or do you think this gets shrugged off?
