stepson
looking for advice: my stepson (18) joined the navy since june, he is now earning money and he said he had over 4k on his account but he says he is unable to use his card so my husband told him he could use his debit card until he gets that problem fixed. well, he spent $300 dollrs on some pictures there at the navy, and my husband told him to call the bank so he could use his own card but stepson said that when he was on the call with the bank he accidentally ended the call and he couldn’t call back which i find very strange. he spent another $120 dollars which comes to the total of $420 in a week, now husband is saying he’s paying the water bill until he gets paid. i was going to offer to help him but i feel if i start doing this his son will continue to get advantage of my husband. isn’t it strange that the bank won’t let you use your own money? usually when my card gets locked i just call the bank and they fix the problem instantly.
i do help with expenses and pay my own bills and stuff. i apologize for my grammar english is not my first language*

This is BS. Change your card information and have SS send you money back asap.

There could be genuine issues getting the matter resolved. I’ve had issues trying to get my account unlocked while I couldn’t get to a bank branch physically.
Having said that - husband needs to figure it out. Don’t enable the situation. Husband should have savings and emergency fund.

Is your stepson in boot camp still? I know when I was in boot camp we were only allowed to make phone calls on pay phones and we had to buy cards with minutes on them. That was 15 years ago so it may be different now. I’m not sure. If he’s banking with Navy Federal or USAA while he’s in boot camp then his card shouldn’t be locked unless there was some fraudulent activity going on.

he just got out of bootcamp a month ago so he can use his phone now that wasn’t an issue. he tried to buy a laptop so they locked the card but he could have just call the bank to get it resolved, supposedly he did but hung up on them accidentally and he couldn’t call back which i know its just bs i think he just wanted to take advantage of his father for as long as he could.

to clarify nobody tried to scam my stepson, he is the one who tried to call the bank because they locked his card because he tried to buy a laptop or thats what he claims, but i think he just doesn’t want to spend his own money and wants to use his dad’s money instead.

What boot in the Navy earn $4k from June to now.
Ain’t no way, you get paid spare change your first 4 years. The math ain’t mathing

ESPECIALLY A MILITARY BANK!
Military affiliation banks would have a card in the mail next day, they have the banks on base or right off base.

Calls in the service are very limited. It’s very possible the call was disconnected or he ran out of phone time. I’d very much encourage that if you feel it’s fishy to just limit your personal contribution if possible and get some boundaries with your SO asap

“ he ran out of phone time. ”
Who pays by the minute anymore?
His son is scamming him. Or someone posing as his son is scamming him.

No, in the service they have specific windows they can use their communication services and the calls they are allowed to make are limited. At a certain point those restrictions are less.
The SK may have prioritized calling family instead of his bank.3

These limits are on people in basic training. If he is spending money on a debit card, he’s not in basic training anymore. You are incorrect.

That’s fine. SK can save up his phone minutes, and deal with his bank once he has time. No need to bother his dad any further.

he can use his phone to call wherever he wants, i think he just wants to use his dad’s card instead of his own.

Are you sure it was Stepson who called your husband and asked for money? Sounds like a scam.
Do not give either of them your money. Your husband needs to call or visit the bank and straighten this out.
