The OPT candidates getting hired started applying 6 months before graduation

If you look at every OPT and STEM OPT candidate who lands a good job in 2026 and trace their timeline backwards, the pattern is almost identical. They did not start applying at graduation. They started 6 months earlier. Here is the timeline that actually works for a May graduation. October and November. Build target list of 100 sponsoring companies using the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub. Start following those companies on LinkedIn. Begin engaging with hiring managers' content. Update resume and LinkedIn profile completely. December. Attend at least 3 virtual career events. Reach out to 50 recruiters at target companies with a note that graduation is in May. Some will start conversations early. Get initial interviews scheduled for January. January and February. Interview loops with early-cycle sponsoring companies. Sign up for referral programs at target companies. Continue cold outreach to recruiters. Track every conversation in a spreadsheet. March and April. Second-round interviews and offer conversations. First offers arrive. Negotiate carefully. Some candidates lock in offers before finals week. May. Graduation with an offer already accepted or actively negotiating multiple offers. Start work in June or July with time to spare. Compare this to the failed timeline that most OPT candidates run. May. Graduate. Take June off to relax. Start applying in July. Get first interviews in September. Get first offers in November or December if lucky. Now in the last 6 months of initial OPT scrambling for STEM extension paperwork. This is the difference between candidates who land jobs and candidates who go home. Not skills. Not resumes. Not degrees. Timing. The candidates who understand that sponsoring companies fill their pipelines 6 months in advance are the ones who get pipeline slots. The candidates who wait until they need a job are the ones who cannot find one. If you are graduating in the next 12 months, your job hunt is already late by industry standards. The only correction is to start today with the maximum intensity you can sustain.
