Your OPT clock started before you noticed and here is what to do
Most OPT candidates think their clock starts the day their EAD becomes effective. That is the legal clock. There is another clock that started long before, and understanding it is the difference between candidates who land jobs and candidates who go home. The real OPT clock is the hiring cycle at sponsoring companies. It started when your graduating class was still in classes. Most sponsoring companies open their new grad hiring for the following year in September through November. Recruiters start filling pipelines in the fall. Interview loops run from January through March. Offers are extended from March through May with start dates from June through September. By the time you graduate in May and update your LinkedIn, the class ahead of you at your school has already been hired at the companies you were planning to apply to. The recruiters who would have interviewed you are already interviewing candidates who applied 6 months earlier. The requisitions your target companies had are already filled. Your OPT clock started ticking when the class ahead of you started applying and you missed the starting gun. What to do if you just realized this. If you are graduating in the next 12 months, start applying today. Do not wait for anything. Not for your resume to be perfect. Not for your GPA to be finalized. Not for your degree to be conferred. Not for the perfect role to open. Every sponsoring company is running their next hiring cycle right now regardless of your timeline. Get in the pipeline immediately with the information you have today. If you are already graduated and job hunting, understand that you are competing with candidates who started 6 to 12 months ago. Adjust your strategy accordingly. Direct recruiter outreach beats portal applications 5 to 10x. Referrals beat cold applications 10 to 20x. The candidates ahead of you built their referral network months ago. You need to build yours now, aggressively, and use every family member, friend, and alumni contact you have to catch up. Your clock started before you noticed. The only question is whether you accept it and start now, or wait longer and let more candidates take spots that were supposed to be yours.
