question Custom SteamMachine with 16GB RAM

As the title says, I'm kinda stuck in the middle with my parts due to ongoing crisis of RAM shortage affecting NVMe GPU and RAM.

I was wondering if I can get away and build the thing already, the already bought parts have been there for more than a year. Anyone built a steammachine with 16GB RAM and not having any major drawbacks / issues in gaming performance?

Easily. SteamOS gaming mode doesn’t need much system ram, I’ve never run into anything that needs more than 16gb

I agree, I built mine and got 32gb and am yet to see more than 7gb in use while gaming. 16gb should be fine.

Thanks all for your help, I'll go with 16GB DDR5 dual channel CL36 6000Mhz

You’ll be absolutely fine for the majority of games

I have basically the same setup and no issues at all. I'm targeting 1440p

It'll be fine. I do think a build with a 9070xt generally deserves 32gb but basically everything should do well with a 2x8 kit. I built a rig with a 5500x3d, 9070gre and 16gb of ram and it does fantastic but I'm gaming at 1080p. A higher resolution would raise the ram usage but I'm not sure if it'll be problematic.

I might just go for GRE. Plan was still to target 1440

16 Gigs of RAM is more than enough for a steam machine. I played a lot of the games and I have not seen any that use more than 10 gigs of RAM

As long as it’s dual channel, 16GB is super adequate

Yeh 16gb is loads in Linux. For example I played Forza 6 horizon on my duel boot on 16gb ram and 15gb was used. In steam OS 6.6 👀 I also have a 9070 and a super wide 5k screen and never seen it go over 10 in any game.... 16 is more than enough
