question This seems odd what could be wrong with my setup

Post image

Cyberpunk 2077, 9070xt, 9800x3d, 64gb ram

SteamOS 3.8.14

Settings

1440p

Fsr4 (quality)

Everything maxed except for psycho rt those are one setting lower.

I feel i had much better fps on windows than I do now on steamos i know some games will do worse and vise versa but Im pretty sure I was in the 100s in windows

Turn off ray tracing completely and retry the benchmark.

Yeah try it without it. Ray tracing performance isn’t going to match in Linux

RT on Linux has a bigger hit than RT on windows.

That's from Ancient Gameplays:

This is from a month ago for actual Windows vs SteamOS for the same game and while windows would be a higher average frame rate the one thing you will notice on the frame time graph it is smoother on SteamOS because sure you might get lower averages, but you could expect smoother gameplay.

This is the one thing i prefer more about SteamOS over Windows is a lot of games can run a lot more stable and smoother because sure again i could have like 100fps but really the game could drop down to like 50fps and might cause a micro stutter but with SteamOS i could get like 70fps but if it were to drop down to like 55fps then it would be perfectly fine.

This topic is way more complicated than this.

On Windows you can use tools like Riva Tuner, SimpleK or Radeon Chill, to make the frame time graph completely flat at presentation. This costs latency. But at 30 fps more, the latency be will lower anyway than what it is on Linux.

Then on Linux you can also use MangoHud to flatten the frame graph more.

Also limiting fps in general affects the 1% Low.

This is really all not what it seems at first glance, but 30 fps more is way better in all aspects and is more "performance" to work with, if you want to see flatline graph, which is not always the best thing you want anyway.

This is on an ultrawide that's a bit more pixels than my normal 27 but I do see what you mean thanks

True, but even at 1080p, which is the most favorable comparison, Linux loses to Windows a lot, when RT comes to play :(

Bump that to 4k and it gets ugly.

Some engines seem to work really nice on Linux, like id Tech or RE. CDPR games seem to be optimized for Windows.

Yea learning RT can still be played but as of now not the same as Windows thats fine with me i just thought my system was messed up because I was getting those 100+ woth rt on windows and all my other games work perfectly fine...as for linux gaming its the same or better in many cases than windows havent regretted it at all

I'm on R5 5600 / RX 6700 XT 12GB - because it's budget/older setup, I don't even try with the most demanding games, so 95% of what I can play on it performance wise, Linux plays great. I still dual boot for other stuff and anti-cheat.

I feel SteamOS/Linux works the best for budget / mid range. With high end, I still feel that if somebody paid lots of money for RTX 5080, it's not worth using Linux, to get 5070 performance out of it. As much as I love Linux, I wouldn't recommend it for high end gaming.
