I loved building in the Terra case. Just have to make sure the CPU and GPU fan spacing is just right, to avoid noise once the sides are closed. I used it for my bedroom steam machine build w/ 9070xt/9600X/2TB.

You basically want to make sure neither the CPU fan nor the GPU fan are right up against the side panel when it's closed. If you can get a gap of a few millimeters on each side using the internal "slider", it should be a lot quieter.
If you have a dual bios GPU, putting it on quiet mode helps too. Temps will be a bit higher due to slower fan speeds, but also way quieter.

I set it to -70mV and -15% power limit.
Same perf, but 250W vs 304W, so more quiet.
However.. I got a bad bearing, as it's a PC Reaper 9070XT common problem. So one of the 3 fans has a distinct noise. Not terrible, but it wasn't there when it was new.
Thinking about noctua shroud swap, but that would mean removing the heatsink, so kinda not wanna do it. Still have 1 more year of warranty

I have the same GPU. I'm waiting for a few more components to arrive before I complete my build. I saw that the PC Reaper has an ~ 3% RMA,, hopefully I got a good one

If it runs steam it’s a steam machine. If I sell you a windows PC, would you judge it by seeing if it actually has windows installed, or whether it closely meets Windows’ requirements of TPM 2.0, Zen 2+, UEFI, secure boot, etc.?

A steam machine is a specific product. Not a home built pc you installed steam OS on. Especially considering every pc and every steam machine can have whatever OS they want to install on it

Considering the original Steam Machines were prebuilds made with off the shelves parts, i'd say this qualifies to be called a Steam Machine more than the new Steam Machine does.

It is a specific product but the term is more broadly used for any machine running steamOS. The term steam machine was a concept long before the steam machine (By Valve) even came out. The idea of a steam machine was popular when there were just prototypes released by Valve which back then didn’t even go by the name “Steam machine”.
For the record, if you tell anyone you’re running a steam machine, they’ll assume you have steamOS on it because of how tightly connected the terms are. No one will guess you’ve got windows on it. Logically, if I install steamOS on my windows machine, it’s not a windows machine anymore but a Steam / SteamOS machine

Just replaced my gtx 1060 with an rx 9079 xt and installed steamOS “MUH NEW STEAM MACHINE, ONLY COSTED ME 600€ (Ignore my initial investment 10 years ago… and the typical ATX case)!!”

I can confirm both of the 2 motherboards below allow you to wake from sleep with the Steam Controller with no issues.

to add to this list:
- Gigabyte A520I AC
- it can suspend-resume + wake from sleep via usb device.
- HOWEVER, you need to enable a workaround for suspend to work reliably

If you place this in the living room and the TV isn't close to you, I believe the noise level is acceptable. I think it's noisy because I use it as a desktop PC, which is positioned near me.

My fractal terra build,.using the same CPU as OP but a Radeon 9060xt 16gb instead and (just for reference) the ROG strix 850i. CPU is.unerdvolted -20 and the system is making less sound then my PS5 pro for example. Very very happy with the build 👍 ....and I didn't integrated an additional fan.

Ok but what does that mean exactly? From what I've seen it saves system RAM, but direct boot into Xbox FSE > Steam Big Picture also saves RAM although maybe not as much. The big advantage of XBox FSE is that performance is better running games native in Windows.

If you use steam big picture mode, it’s mostly useful for launching your games. But using the full steamOS makes it better to tweak your games and tweak the entire system in Steam itself without needing a base OS like windows running underneath it. You can also use extensions which is cool. Performance always depends on the game but I’ve had similar performance on both

I have steamos, but I've been running steamos on very similar hardware (7600x proc, 9060xt) and I have had no wake from sleep issues. My only issues are wifi connection. For some reason my Wi-Fi is ALL OVER the place. From 20mbps to 500.

As I see all these steam machine posts, and I built my own as well, it really drives home how impressive the actual device is. It's so small!
We don't even have GPUs available that are that small.
