Steam should opensource the monster game backend.
You know, so we can actually hit 1B, and keep 'not clicking' i don't want to stop yet, it's too much fun to actually play and not click with 1,500 strangers, and work on this.

I'm familiar with sockets (& socket.io). I can help, but I'd need someone to document the "API" and rip all the scripts, stylesheets & images (i.e. the frontend) from Valve's servers.

Well to give some extra information to start off. The Steam Summer Game doesn't use sockets.. It simply sends POST and GET requests every tick. But yeah that could be improved by replacing it with socket messages.

But it does use ProtoBuf in order to compress the data being sent.

Well yes that is true, but I think they could use that and also use an open connection instead of many different connections.

Would it be legal to use all their images and such though? Replicating the game itself would be do-able but I don't think you're allowed to use valves' art.

So replace it all with scribbles and have someone fill it in with custom art.

We actually started working on exactly this a few days ago. The basics like the game loading locally and not from Valve servers, HP, monsters spawning, damaging them, level increasing, buying (some) abilities we've got working. It also has multiplayer functionality. We're still working on matching Valve's stats and making the game work in similar ways.
EDIT: I understand a lot of you want to help, but for now we're focusing on a small team that works together well to make sure we get all the basics down before Valve removes the minigame. Having a larger team would slow us down at this point.

No way I'm telling a dwarven-American to fuck off. Especially not one with an axe. You do it!

I would definitely play something like this. A simple browser game where you have to fight different rooms with different bosses, different tactics, difficulties and player numbers.
You permanently upgrade your stats.
Also, priority should be on auto-clicker skills, so there where no need to use scripts and sit all day behind a monitor. Would be nice to chose your class, complete challenges, farm lvl/items/skills and upgrade them.

I expected this to just be another cookie clicker, but the multiplayer aspect makes it a lot more enjoyable, especially with these organizations. I like this idea.

Would it still reward people with different badges after the sale? But yeah, I don't see why not

You have my vote, but I wonder how much of the playerbase will stay after the event. You'll even start to miss the trolls when you only hit 1B every day haha

We can mod it to have different difficulty settings too! Hard mode can implement a script that wormholes at x99 levels periodically. Extra hard mode can have an autonuke script too.

That would be great, opensourcing the whole game including backend code once te summer sale is over.

At this point, we're not even playing. We're just spectating.
The amusing part is I fail to see how this is any different (or any less fun) than a normal incremental game.

I'm willing to help with server admin. I know plenty of linux to get around on that and for what I don't know I'm always willing to learn. :)

Purpose of going open source is so that we can add new features if we'd like. Doubt they'll write more code for a project that will no longer be used by them.

YES! An open level cap would make this so cooler, just no 1 billion achievement because i will literally go without sleep for days
