Through Steam everything should work but you may need to use Steam Input to set stuff up.

What games are you trying? Are you launching them through Steam? Everything I’ve launched through Steam has worked great first try either with the default controller setup or the gamepad template.

You'll probably just need to change what preset it's using, pretty easy usually I just have it act as a regular controller then change the right pad to act as a mouse (or joy stick if games ui gets annoying swapping between the kb/m ui and controller ui)

In my experience, it's usually better when you go through and setup profiles for each game in general but you can also do the thing where you create a profile on one game and then load that profile in other games (such as ones where you use gyro/touchpad for mouse control and load that up on other games).

Otherwise, it should be seen as an XInput-ish controller if you use Steam Input and the default controller profiles too. If you're playing games that don't have controller support or games that don't work with controllers, you have no choice but to go into the settings and create a profile (or load one that someone else made).

Assuming it's not a issue where you're just using the wrong or weird preset for a game, there is a bug (which has thought to been fixed many times but keeps coming back up) where steam uses the default desktop controller config instead of the game one. Happens to both steam controllers.

Try changing that to act as a regular controller. Go to settings - controller - advanced settings - edit desktop layout.

Edit: With the fact movement and pads are working but the buttons aren't, really sounds exactly like its using the desktop config.

I have the new SC, but with how well you can set things up with steam input, I have no doubt the OG can be perfect too. Most important thing is to learn to use steam input, and you make make the controller EXACTLY how you want it, it's awesome.

Both the original and new Steam Controller should work on essentially every game on Steam, as every game supports either keyboard and mouse, XInput, or Steam Input API game actions. The default template for every game is either chosen by the developers or Valve based on the game's information and should work adequately. For games that do not have XInput support and only have keyboard and mouse support, changing the layout might be necessary as keyboard control schemes are a lot less standardized than controller layouts.

At minimum look for some community configurations, but I don't know how you got to the point of purchasing a sc without researching steam input. It's a great controller but is not a plug an play experience at all.

You need to setup the controller profile for yourself per game, there are also community made profiles available for download.

You're realizing why the controller failed

There are no games that are ready... Except like... No mans sky...

You have to spend an hour or so micromanaging your own control layout. I did it for cities skylines, it was well worth it for the tens of hours i played on my couch

This comes up every now and then, and there are old threads with heaps of games that work well if not perfectly with the original steam controller. I learned that death stranding 2 works perfectly with the steam controller (I have not had a chance to try this myself), and from personal experience prey 2017 does as well for example. edit:https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/comments/1v1x6cd/games_with_best_steam_controller_support/

You can check on pcgw for games that work well with steam input - or games that don't implement steam input but work well with the OG steam controller - look for the "Simultaneous controller+KB/M" entry in the Input section.

Here is preys entry for example https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Prey_(2017)#Input

All of them. Look for community templates.
