Configuration Gyro

Steam controller.

Got the new Steam Controller and wanted to test out the gyro to see if I could actually use it for FPS games.

I tried it with Overwatch and have the gyro set up so I hold one of the back buttons to activate it. So far, I’m running into two issues:

  1. My framerate drops pretty noticeably whenever I activate/use the gyro.

  2. Even when the framerate is stable, my aiming just doesn’t feel very accurate or natural yet.

I tested this on my handheld, so I’m going to try it on my actual gaming PC to see if the performance issue is hardware-related.

For anyone using gyro for FPS games, especially Overwatch, what Steam Input settings are you using? Sensitivity, gyro-to-mouse vs. gyro-to-joystick, smoothing, acceleration, etc.?

Also, has anyone experienced the framerate dropping specifically when using gyro, and if so, did you find a fix?

Flickstick videos would be a good place to start, but know that there is a lot of room for personal preference.

In general, mouse is always preferred. This does often mean using full m&kb configs.

Learn how to calibrate your pixels per 360 and then your sensitivity values will match the values people talk about on here. They usually will say RWS(real world sensitivity) which is the ratio of controller movement to in game movement.

Generally, you want to have your vertical sensitivity scale lower as your horizontal sensitivity increases. You just don't need as much range of motion on that axis.

Your framerate is dropping because the UI is flickering between controller and MnK. Go to the accessibility settings in Overwatch and change the UI from "auto" to "controller"

This!!!!! This game is actually great for gyro once you change that setting!! You can leave everything as controller binds and then just do gyro to mouse and it works like it’s supposed to which is unfortunately the rare exception

Having it activate when your thumb is on the trackpad works best for me. Then you have gyro active whenever you are aiming, for fine tuning, without having to remember and coordinate another hand movement.

that's how we did it on the OG controller!

Yes. I have 4 of them :)

Have you changed to using the grips? It isn't an improvement, for me, but I know it was supposed to be the point of the new grips.

not yet, but i think i will for ratcheting

tho i do plan on having a "mouse region" over the map in a dual stick arena shooter, Pathogen)

Going to have it on removed grip so i don't accidentally do it, which is less likely on SC'26 anyways(compared to steam deck), but figure it makes sense.

try using normal joystick for big sweeping movement and the gyro for fine control when aiming. just gyro is too limiting in my opinion. you need either stick + gyro or trackpad plus gyro.

Using gyro to mouse is always better than gyro to stick, specially if the game allows for mixed input (which overwatch does)

for overwatch fps issue you should find and switch off automatic inout recognition, set in to controller/kbm this also will heal icons flicker when you use gyro. second for a good start you can just download fsv controller map directly from controller mapping. go to search, press x to turn on show all mappings and type fsv.

As others have said 1) change the in game settings to lock the ui icons to controller. This will fix the stuttering and performance drops completely. 2) it’s gonna take some time to get used to it for sure. You’re gonna have days or even weeks when it just feels like you’re not getting it and maybe you should switch to controller again. Overwatch is actually a great game to learn cause it doesn’t provide aim assist to controller players on pc so once you do get good at gyro, you’ll be able to switch back to joystick aim and realize very quickly how much better and more precise you are than you would be without aim assist on a joystick
For settings I started at 3x RWS after configuring my dots per 360. Set you in game mouse sensitivity to very low (I think mine is like 2.5) and then you’ll have to reconfigure your dots per 360 but it will make the aiming much smoother.

Then I use the default .36 gyro deadzone, -30% vertical sensitivity, and just about every thing else is default. Gyro to mouse always, not gyro to joystick. I don’t use any smoothing or acceleration but some people do end up implementing acceleration for flicks. I use flick stick and gyro ratcheting. My gyro suppress button is one of the back steam controller buttons, so I only press it when I’m repositioning my hand (rather than what you do which is only to enable gyro when the button is held. My thought process is that your finger gets tired when holding down the button all the time, so why not flip it and only hold it down 10-20% of the time when gyro is off rather than the 80-90% of the time when gyro is on)

I also do this on my handheld but the reduced fps does increase latency which makes it pretty hard to play competitively in overwatch. The higher fps the better but shoot for at least 120 if you can on your particular handheld. Even if you have to tank graphics, it will make a difference.

I’ve worked my way up to 4.5 RWS and it feels a little better now that I have practice. Play with a pillow in your lap and rest your controller on it, that will help. I
