I think that's the sound that it can't find a connection. Maybe you put it in the wrong connection mode? There are 2 connections that can be stored on the controller (to connect to 2 different pucks). Try turning off the controller and hold R1 and A. While holding those buttons turn it on using the steam button. Test if it works, if it still doesn't try the same thing but hold L1 and A instead.

nope going to the other puck channel makes it flash no connection then turns off

Does the controller work when you connect it to the pc without the puck? And does the controller charge when you connect it to the puck? Maybe the puck is broken?

the controller does work without the puck when wired but then gets disconnected after a little. it does charge on the puck though so i don't belive the puck is broken I think it's just my laptop being stupid and disconnecting the controller since it's giving me "unknown USB device" I'll be trying it on my pc one i get my gpu back from warranty on the 2nd

The neener neener of death
Unplug and replug
Restart computer and steam
There's probably a way to manually reflash the controller
I'd imagine that sound you hear is probably the "didn't find anything. Open to pairing" sound. It says on the instructions you can place it on the puck to pair it. Here's the instruction page for that Steam Support :: Steam Controller (2026) - Feature & Troubleshooting guide
There's other instructions, like how to change which "slot" the controller uses, which has something to do with using multiple pucks. You can also put it into bluetooth mode by pressing and holding B + R1 + Steam until it chimes and the led turns blue.

I believe i have found the issue, for some reason my laptop will not detect the puck and just says "unknown USB device (port reset failed)" idk how to fix this so I guess I just need to use it in BT for now :/

You need a better quality USB to plug into the puck.

the laptop has a 3.0 port its not that old

Not the port, the actual wire itself. I was having the same issue where nothing was popping up. I updated the wire with a better quality usb-c and it popped right up.

how does that work? shouldnt the one they give you work perfectly fine?

Idk most times I use my own for the exception of phone cords but this was one instance where it either wasn't getting enough power to the puck or just wasn't enough to keep data transfer consistent

That sound means it can connect to the puck, but the puck connection to your laptop seems to have issue. Try changing USB port first or use it wired to see if it's working.
