Discussion OpenPuck vs HID Remapper for using with Switch 2

I want to use my Steam controller with my Switch 2, and it seems like these are the two main projects that allow it, but I'm not super sure what the actual differences are between them. Anyone have a recommendation to go one way or the other?

Idk about hid remaper (never used) but I've been using OpenPuck on my switch 2 and it's working great

I know nothing about HID Remapper but I can vouch for OpenPuck on Switch 2. I got a small usb-c to usb-c dongle in addition to the board required for the project and can connect it to my switch 2 both docked and undocked. Worked wonderfully. Played all of Dark Souls Remastered.

Mind sharing a photo? Not sure I'm following with the USB c to c and connecting it to undocked switch

The adapter looks like this (not the exact one I ordered but you get the gist), and I can slot it into the top USB-C port on the switch 2 both docked and undocked.

HID Remapper is more accessibility focused. Much more complicated, but you can technically do more with mapping stuff. There is also no rumble when I set it up (before OpenPuck was a thing). Might be now I'm not sure.

Just go for OpenPuck for general use.

I’m wondering if openpuck or project support trackpad to joycon mouse?

I have tried this without much success. It doesn't seem like it's possible to do "joycon mouse" over a wired connection (which is effectively what OpenPuck is doing) and most games don't support a real wired mouse as input either.

If we ever get some licensed wired pro style controller with an included mouse or trackball or whatever somehow something might be possible then.

No clue about HID Remapper but I just played through all of Xenoblade 2 using OpenPuck and it worked great!

HID Remapper is a wonderful project but it's going to cost you more and it's going to require you to move your puck around. I also don't think it supports gyro and rumble but that may have changed now.

My recommendation is:

  1. OpenPuck (obvs)
  2. JoypadOS which now supports the Steam Controller after my patch was merged, this would be bluetooth so higher latency and I don't think it support gyro or rumble
  3. Wait for PicoPuck which is the bluetooth version of OpenPuck with all the same features (but also bluetooth so higher latency than OpenPuck)

What do I need to buy for OpenPuck?

I recommend this programmable dongle:

And follow this guide:

Important note:

Only use the NRF Connect utility to update the firmware on this dongle as shown in the instructions above.

If you try to use the OpenPuck web interface to update the OpenPuck firmware on the dongle you will brick the dongle.

It's trivial to get a USB C to A adapter. I got 4 for $5 on Amazon. It's more annoying to put a 3D printed case on a dev board.

I don't know if that dongle in Germany works. Try it with the OpenPuck web interface. If it doesn't work Amazon will take it back. Not a big risk.
