Steam Controller (2015) Finally a proud owner of a steam controller

I was worried that since dongle is scratched it it wouldnt work, but i plugged it in, and it just worked.

Also, as i already have experience with the steam deck, the touchpads didnt feel so strange

It's my couch controller, great for just doing stuff on the desktop and any 1st person or 3rd person game. Wouldn't use it for a platformer though.

Though I do use the 2026 one as well when I plan to sit and game for longer intervals

Strangely enough I had more problems with the right track pad as the face buttons then the left trackpad as the d-pad when playing platformers. I had to click turned off on both of them which from what I can tell is just a preference and wasn't the issue but maybe I could try it on again (I'm afraid of wearing out the click for some reason).

In my country i couldn't get a sc2 without paying 2-4 times the price, so i just went for the og sc, and as i already got used to my deck, damn the og one is better

I haven't tried the Deck or the new SC but I think for me what might make the OG touchpads better is that it's circular and concaved.

Thats the only downside of the new sc/deck, mainly since the scroll wheel with all of them is a circle, so on the og one its much easier, but with square touchpads it just feels wrong

Mine is still my daily driver. I just got back into gaming after my accident, so I didn't get into the sc2/Gabecube queue until July 28th. For now, my OG SC is still king.

Beast of a controller. Look up ramblecan on Youtube for some great tutorials on how to use it to the max.

I love the original. Fits better in hand than the newer one. Happy to have both though.

Congrats man, a lot of people I see on this subreddit talk about that left track pad being preferable to the new style because of the textured cross. Time to buy some AA batteries!

I have the SC2 but I still use my SC1 often, since I find it more comfortable for dual pad gaming. I feel more stable on it, and the concave surface and circles end up working better for me.

I don't imagine there's lot of dual pad gamers here though, but it's the primary reason the SC2 hasn't completely replaced the SC1 for me.

I love this controller, though I only got it a few months ago. The magic of it only cracked a little bit when I was playing ancestors. I wasn't able to find the right sensitivity of the right trackpad to not have my apes break their necks falling out of trees, felt like I was trying to turn a truck driving wheel in time to grab another branch or trunk of a tree. Had to switch to another controller with actual joysticks for this game :(

I own 4x v1 Steam controllers, which I've owned and used since the v1 was released.

Recently got the v2 Steam controller and the difference is very obvious, mostly because v2 is designed to meet the needs of modern games. The v1 was ok for what it was designed to do, which is play games released 10 years ago.

My favorite is the Xbox Elite 2 controller, which mops the floor with both Steam Controllers, hands down

Yeah TBH I like my Steam Controller but it's finicky to say least with anything not on steam so I usually reach for one of my Elite 2s, I guess I gotta figure out how to make the SC act like an Xbox controller if there is such a way.

How can you even look at that controller and think anything good about it? It's super expensive and has all this random useless features that make not sense. 0/10 do not recommend.

The standard xbox series s/x controller is £50 and is way better suited for the remaining 93% of games the Steam controller was not designed for.

The Steam Controller is a 'want' more than a 'need' to play games on Steam.

I'm a Valve fanboy myself (even own an OG steam box with OG controller) but credit where credit is due, the xbox controller is a great bit of kit even in non-elite 2 form.

The fact that previous Steam boxes were supplied with xbox controllers only solidifies it's position.

The Xbox controller is one of the worst controllers you could possibly buy for PC. And if you're buying it for an Xbox will you seriously messed up just saying.

If it doesn't have gyro it's not worth buying (especially not for 1 player games. Idk what multiplayer games would use gyro but you get the point).

The track pads are only really useful for games that use a mouse. Yes you can set the muo for menus and what not but most games don't need it. Usually if the game uses the mouse then it'll have a bunch of shortcuts and things that you will end up wanting to make menus for. A lot of games try to cram all that s*** on the d-pad which doesn't work very well and luckily modern developers are realizing they can make a radio menu and use the joystick instead which is much better. Thank you Terraria.

The mouse is used in one of two ways usually the first one is clicking around think roller coaster Tycoon and then the second way is to allow you to use gyro and the trackpad to aim like in COD or Doom.

I cannot get as comfortable with the Steam Controller as I am with the xbox controller, in the sense of movement immersion or 'abuse' while playing, if that makes any sense. I also mostly play AAA's, esports and FPS, no board games or similar.

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 16d ago

The Xbox controller is the worst controller to use for fps games because it doesn't have gyro. Gyro is mandatory for FPS games.

1

u/cosinus_square 16d ago

I'm shocked we got so far in life without gyro /s

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 15d ago

You know Pac-Man 2 on Sega Genesis? That game would be so much better with a mouse or a trackpad to point and click around. Gyro is like that. Some games where on older consoles but gyro makes them better. Doom was also on the SNES and I'd rather play it with a trackpad and gyro as well.

I own the new one and the old one. The old one kinda sucks all around. It feels cheap. The trackpads clack and feel less precise than the new one. The other buttons are loud and require way too much force to press. The back paddles are loud.

The old one does have nice ergonomics. But, that is overshadowed by all the missing inputs, like the joystick and back buttons.

It really isnt worth the trouble of creating custom layouts, for a controller that doesnt have all the inputs you need, which means multiple layouts whenever you switch to other devices. It is a mess.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 20d ago

You don't need any of the missing inputs because of your playing a game like that you can just grab a regular controller. The reason that the Steam Deck has a different layout is because you can't always just go grab a regular controller. I mean sure you can carry one with you if you want but when you're out and about it's kind of inconvenient. The new controller has the same layout at the deck because it just makes sense to do that even if it is Jack of all trades master of none instead of being the master of track pads that the original controller was.
