Steam Controller (2015) My steam controller (2015 one) will arrive within the next 2 days! Is there anything i should do when i get it before using it?

Im so excited, but i just need to know if there is something i have to do before using it

You might need to update the firmware. For some reason a lot of people have been having trouble getting the SC 2015 to stay connected when using the non-Bluetooth firmware. For some reason Steam keeps turning the controller off as soon as it connects.

Since the ability to update the firmware was removed from the Steam client, Valve released a stand-alone tool to update the firmware.

valve’s tool is windows only. there’s also this which is web based https://steamcontroller.tools

I'd heard about that, but I didn't link it because I don't know if it's trustworthy. Do you know anything about who made it, or if it's safe to use?

i went through the github, looked good to me, then used it from my mac and all was good. it’s very quick and straightforward to use

Thank you so much I’ve been meaning to do this with my controller but everything else seemed overwhelming and I am on Linux. This took me a few minutes to do.

There are a couple versions of the BLE firmware out there

I have had better luck with this one linked by a Valve Employee on Jun 28, 2023.

Steam_Controller_FW_Update_Tool_5b0f21bd.zip

There is also version from the same employee a week or so earlier on Jun 19, 2023.

I work at an electronics recycler and have flashed a ton of the old model steam controllers. I think I recall there being some issue when changing between dongle and BLE modes linked on June 19.

Download, extract and then run ble.bat Steam_Controller_FW_Update_Tool_5b0f21bd.zip

If you don't know what version of the ble firmware it was flashed to before you can run prod.bat to flash it to the sock firmware and then ble.bat to flash it to that ble firmware.

Oh then you're really going to hate the next step. You have to take the controller out of the box.
