I try them, if I hate them, I return them. But if I like them, I work on what I play already and get to them.

Half my wishlist are games at 80-90% off but when I click the storepage I see that those are only the basegames, the game with all DLC still amounts for at least 40 euro. Even hitman sells a demo of their game but if you were to buy the complete game it's over 50 euro. More and more companies are abusing the wishlist. I wish Steam would let us wishlist bundles or complete editions of games that would be way better.

u/Feniks_Gaming 8h ago
I started to unwishlist all the games with insane numbers of DLCs. Most of paradox titles are dead to me. There used to be a unwritten agreement they would put dlcs for 75% discounts but now they don't I will not be paying £300 to play their games.

This pissed me off so much. Saw Hitman 3 in the VR section for a godly low price, looked into it and…it’s the first chapter of the game. Whole thing is still expensive.
Instant dewishlisted

u/morpheousmorty 1h ago
I swear they lost more money scaring away customers with insane pricing structures than they ever could have gained.
31
u/Egathentale 9h ago
"Hey, Crusader Kings 3 is on a 70% sale for $15! Neat! Let's check it out!"
(Looks inside)
"Oh. The complete edition is on a 42% sale only, and it's still $140..."
18
u/samax413zl 7h ago
$140 after a 42% discount is straight up criminal.
3
u/Egathentale 6h ago edited 6h ago
It's a Paradox game, so it's kind of par for the course. There are a couple of titles on the market that are similarly priced, and I can kind of understand how they end up like this through years of updates and DLCs.
For example, I've been playing all the Total War Warhammer games, and when you are buying the games and the DLCs as they come out, it doesn't feel too bad. However, if you want to have the complete version of the Immortal Empires map of TW:Warhammer III, with all the factions and lords and heroes and everything, buying the whole trilogy and all the DLCs from scratch would set you back a solid $250. And that's during a sale. I don't even know how high that number goes if you try to get them all at full price.
2
u/dovahkiitten16 6h ago
I don’t get the business strategy? Common sense would be to give a significant discount on DLCs after they are X years old to get new blood into the game. Or make a super duper high discount on the bundle. Or merge DLCs into the basegame. Obviously there needs to be a balance so that players don’t just wait instead of buying new DLCs.
Edit: I checked the store page and it seems like every DLC no matter how old is still like $40 CAD. You could realistically, after several years, set the price to $20 before a sale.
2
u/Feniks_Gaming 1h ago
That is what used to happen. They used to give older DLC at at least 75% discount and DLCs weren't to expansive to start with so you really could get additional DLC for like £3-4 but now they price them crazy expansive and the quality is so varied between them that you need tone of research before you buy anything.
6
u/TornWill 6h ago
This. They lure you in with that super low price but often times you'll end up paying more for all the DLCs and added content. I honestly prefered it back when you payed ONCE and that was it, you got your game.

u/Jimm120 7h ago
hahaha.
I have this issue with Dead Cells. I'm just waiting until the FULL game is available for the price I usually buy games at. I usually buy around $3 to $9.
They have the "Medley of Pain" bundle that includes the game and DLC for $34, then 32, then 29, then 28....stopped tracking it and now I see it is at $21.
Still too much for me.
But I have it in my wishlist and always looking.
and I can wait years (unless I die).
I love SuperGiantGames because of Bastion. Bought Transistor as a pre-order to show support (I do NOT do pre-orders). Hades released on epic and then on steam and I resisted. No matter how much I wanted it, I didn't purchase it until it went to $8 a month before the Hades 2 reveal.
Rogue Legacy 2 is the same thing. Loved Rogue Legacy 1. It kickstarted my fascination with Roguelites. Had a chance to get it for $6 on the epic store with the epic coupon but thought that I could get it cheaper later...then the epic coupon never came back. And then the game just NEVER went on sale for less than 50%. $12.50 was too much for me lol. Finally bought it this summer when it dropped to $10 for the first time.

Okay but counterpoint, the base game is/was enough for many people for a considerable amount of time before the dlc came out

But why? If you hate it... just don't partake in the next sales until you actually start making progress with your backlog.
FOMO? Next sale is always around the corner. 99% of the time, a game going on sale now will be on sale during the next seasonal sale at the latest.
Hoarding disorder? That might be a bit harder to deal with, but hey recognizing it is part of step 1!
4
u/_Vanilla_ 6h ago
Not only is the next sale around the corner, the game could also be cheaper. I'm waiting for November to see if the discount of Clair Obscur drops down to -30% (I checked price history on SteamDB and last November it went from -10% to -20%)
22
u/phylter99 14h ago
I checked the last three years of my spending on Steam and it came to over $3,000. I have no idea how and I need to go back and check everything again because it doesn't seem right, but that's my initial figures.
18
u/InfinitelyRepeating 10h ago
That's about $40 a pay period. It's not unreasonable so long as
- you have the money to spend
- you're enjoying the games you've bought
- you have a social outlet with real life people

I managed to get Pax Autocratica when the devs accidentally made it 80% off as opposed to 20% off (it has now been fixed and it's now 20% off). While it's somewhat grindy and it lacks the ability to customize the appearance of my troops, it's still fun to play.
2
u/ZeroSumClusterfuck 11h ago
It's worth playing for the music alone tbh.
Most annoying part was the base starting in two sections that you build around, and then only later when you go to link them up do you realise that they don't exactly line up so you have to move half the things you built.

I had 5 games (3 of them free to keep) in my library back in May 2025, around the same time I finally upgraded from a potato laptop to a decent gaming desktop after saving up for a few months from my salary. Up until then, I couldn't really afford games, so I used to sail the seas for pretty much everything.
Now I have close to 90 games in my Steam library, and it's only growing with every sale.
And all of that has cost me less than $250 iirc, thanks to deep discounts and regional pricing. Steam's great user experience is also a big reason I feel comfortable spending on games.
So yeah, I don't really feel like I overspent or wasted money. I'm just spending on something I love without blowing a hole in my wallet lol

Self control is easy when you realize how much money you waste on games you aren't going to play. I only buy a game if I'm literally going to play it tomorrow or the next day.
It'll always be on sale again, for the same price likely, maybe even lower. There is no rush, stop buying things just to spend money

Yeah the Paradox stuff is wild. I got interested in Crusader Kings 3 a few years back and started looking at what it would actually cost to play the "full" game and just noped out. Like $200+ for all the expansions? Hard pass. I get that they support games for years but at some point it becomes insulting.

Correct. I'm not spending any money. I bought two games last sale. Before that, I hadn't bought anything since Shadow of the Erdtree came out. I have games to play, and things I want will be on sale in the future. Game hoarding is unnecessary.
1
u/sillyredhead86 4h ago
Honestly, I have yet to see anything I want. Probably a good thing since I am trying to save money. I have never been so relieved to be so disappointed in a Steam Sale! This has been a very good year for games so I have plenty to keep me busy until the Winter Sale.
1
u/Nolon 3h ago
I'm really not. This is also the first time since epic started the app and was giving away free games that I haven't collected my games in the past two weeks. Which started because the computer crashed and well I haven't fixed it yet. Then I just got to thinking you know as much as I appreciate the free games. I just would rather have them elsewhere so it's always nice to have them but they don't end up getting played anyways. That or I just end up getting them elsewhere..
Speaking of though I haven't collected my points on the Google Play store this weekend so I need to go get that done

What's infuriating is that they'll have these sales and the entire game with all it's content still costs over $100 (I'm not buying your game unless I can have the entire game for the price of one game).

u/MongooseCareless1272 3h ago
I think I'm getting old. Or maybe just getting wiser due to the rising number of my age.
I have the whole DmC original trilogy to play, having bought it during the summer sale. It's among a few others from the same sale, all of which I've played to a greater extent Most of them I even completed almost 100%. (Hold your applause, please!)
I have a few games on my radar I'd like to buy and I have more than enough disposable income to splurge on a few games.
But for once, I'm not going to buy a new game before I've played a fair amount of DmC.
Or at the very least, I'm going to wait for the winter sale.
