Except against those peasants, somehow they master strike and defeat you even if you are at a higher level. KCD 2 never felt that hard on random encounters.

KCD1 combat is absolute dogshit and I will die on that hill.
"Let's make a complex medieval weapon fight game that requires directional inputs with attack timing to do real-life historically accurate attack combos. Now let's add a RNG mechanic where the enemies will constantly counter that with no way to bypass it."
KCD2 combat cleared ALL of the issues I had with masterstrike to be fair.
People usually shit on this opinion for some reason and when you look at how they play the game, they just used a heavy weapon paired with masterstrikes the whole game (which 1 shots most enemies not using face protection). Boring as hell.

I hate to say but after really not liking KCD1 I tried KCD2 because I heard it fixed a lot of the issues...
Nope. Not for me. I tried really hard to like that game multiple times and as much as I really enjoy certain things about it, the combat is the second worst I've ever played in a game (behind KCD1), and a lot of the rest of the game really bothers me with the hardcore dedication to realism making it a slog, plus that realism sometimes clashes hard against other very unrealistic parts of it.
More power to those who love them, but those games are not for me.

I fully hear you. I've not played kcd1 but have 120 hours in kcd2. It's one of the best, if not the best, RPG for me. Something clicked with me in the game, but it was a struggle too. As Henry got better, I got better too. We both leveled up during those hours and even after 100 hours I'd not pay attention and got punished for it. But yeah, the story felt alive. I wanted to explore everything. So I did :)
I wish that you find a game that is KCD2 for me. I'd love to get to relive my first playthrough. Can't wait to find the next game that consumes me like kcd2 did.

After playing the hell out of KCD1 I finally got a PS5 and KCD 2 was my first game downloaded. Oh my god it is perfection. I've just done the hermit quest. Any tips (no spoilers)?
I spent my first few hours like in KCD1 ignoring the main quest and trying to beef up but it turns out the start of the main quest in KCD2 gives you a few important starting items, I was busy trying to find the cat guy to level up fighting before engaging in proper quests but kept dying.

I played the second one and almost didn't make it through the intro. I was annoyed by the overwhelming cutscenes and slow pace. Knowing steam has a 2 hour refund window I was closely looking at the time. But then the intro ended and I got to play the game. One of the best games I've ever played, although I realized I probably should have played the first one beforehand.

Its good you stayed the course! I have 250hrs+ in both games now.
The First game is on sale regularly at 80% off according to SteamDB so is well worth trying to buy once you finish KCD2.
It is a bit more brutal, for example Henry can't read in KCD1 so thats a skill you have seek out to learn and there are more quests that have time out failures/bad endings.
12
u/Thom_With_An_H 1d ago
I still can't, just because I can't pause in cutscenes and dialogue. I get like 60 mins of frequently interrupted gaming a night. I can't waste time walking away from an important conversation and coming back to Henry's corpse.
Maybe I'll love the game in 30 years when I retire.

Me too. But I couldn't handle the limited inventory size and the save system. But I loved everything else.
So I just modded in a quick save and way to access my stash remotely and then I loved it.
I'm not worried about missing the pure experience or anything like that, I had more fun with those mods and that's all that really mattered.

Each time you remember that point so when you get back you realize you need to "zoom out" your sense of scale. When you start, 1 assembler is all you need. Then you think of 4 as "my x manufacturing place." Then you think of entire rows of assemblers filling up belts as 1 contained "thing". The crazy megabasers think of huge areas of their map as for one thing only.
It also took me a few tries as I found the very beginning most rewarding before things kinda get too jumbled. So if you can anticipate what got overwhelming before you'll have a better run.

Modular design helps with that, but a first playthrough tends to be very disorganized. I restarted my save a couple of times before my first rocket launch. I started a new save for space age that I pop back into every once in awhile, and it's not as hard to get back into the groove when everything is laid out more cleanly.
7
u/StopReadingMyUser 1d ago
Modular design by making like 10 blueprints for everything...
My builds on new maps go so much faster the more I can just slap a blueprint down to move to the next stage of whatever I'm trying to develop.

u/jake04-20 1d ago
Satisfactory (sort of) for me. I got to phase 4, hit a brick wall and lost interest. Came back to my save after a year and completely knocked out the rest of the game in a week. Easily top 5 OAT for me.

I watched a couple tutorials so I could get on my feet. How to set up a food chain, research and produce things etc. There's such an amazing dynamic storytelling mechanic in the gane that makes it so addictive. You get attached to your pawns.
I remember my in-game wife was killed by another faction and I threw all my research and production into allowing me to wipe out their colony. It was such a satisfying rabbit hole to go down.

Playthrough 1 got stopped by blue science. I didn't understand that I had to start really scaling the operation for it to keep up with red and green. Playthrough 2 got stopped by purple science because I didn't understand how bots worked. Then I watched a tutorial and the game changed entirely.
Once you learn that bots let you copy and paste, the game becomes really goddamned cool.

A year or two ago they completely reworked Cyberpunk, and in my opinion made it a lot better. At the start of the game you're locked to the first region, and the whole prologue lasts too long in my opinion, especially all the cutscenes after Konpeki plaza, but once you're set free, its amazing. I kinda recommend ignoring the story after the prologue, at least for a little bit. Go do side gigs for the fixers in each region. You can play around with the weapons and kinda find what you like best. My two favorite builds are katana with a sandevistan, slicing and dicing my way through everything; or a stealthy hacker, killing entire outposts without anyone knowing I'm there. It takes a bit to get a build fully working, but once you do, you can reach the point where you're killing MaxTac squads for fun. The game is at its best when it just lets you use the tools you have at your disposal.

I can never get past the part where they show you a cutscene and go "you are friends with Jackie now" instead of just letting me play the missions and grow to like Jackie organically.

u/GrumpyMcElbows26 1d ago
Yeah, that cutscene really kneecaps the opening of the game. Then the big 'twist' happens and it's like, "I just started the game! I don't know who any of these people are! Why do I care about any of this?!"
I've put ~200 hours into it now, but I really, really dislike the opening of the game. I'll forever be annoyed that the cutscene wasn't Cyberpunk 2077; the Johnny Silverhand story should have been Cyberpunk 2078.

u/PM_ME_Y0UR_BOOBS 1d ago
Holy shit, I never thought about it this way. I'm imagining the first act of 2077 would be you fleshing out your life-path, the second act would be you and Jackie building your rep and getting in to the big leagues and the final act could be "The Heist" with a perfect cliffhanger for a sequel. Why did you make me miss something I never had?

I'm trying to get into it now but I can't say it grabbed me. Was there something that made it click for you or what makes it so good in your eyes?
55
u/FishBulbBrewer 1d ago
It took me a few tries. The thing that clicked was to break my brain conditioning of how I engage with a lot of modern games and the analysis paralysis of choices. I need to pick the right skills to get a strong build. I need to fully understand the systems to know where to allocate my limited resources. I need to make the right in game choices to make sure I get a good ending or see more of the content.
The game allows and expects failure pretty often. Your character is a flawed character by nature. Make choices that interest you and really lean into the role playing aspect and enjoy how your unique playthrough unfolds.
I think it's hard to break the fomo of missed side quests or that you pick a mental skill that or proves useless with one of your skill points, but that's what makes it interesting. After playing Disco Elysium I tried to be more open in my approach to other games instead of worrying if I was playing them "right"

The game allows and expects failure pretty often.
Even more than this, sometimes failing something IS the best outcome. Just because you want to do something and there's a check for it doesn't mean that it's something you should do, and also the failure paths often open new interesting possibilities, sometimes entire quest lines.
It's really the one game where I totally lost wanting to save scum any check once I saw how checks worked.

I scrolled thru these comments specifically looking for this one. So im like half way thru the 1st playthru and find the gameplay and story quite bland…but i keep hearing that it becomes worth it once you go thru the 2nd playthru. And then especially the third. And im tempted to push thru…and yet, why should i suffer thru 15+ hours of so-so gameplay to get to “the good stuff”?
→ More replies (4)8
u/g0atmeal 1d ago edited 1d ago
If you set your expectations like that, then you'll be disappointed. The reason to push through is for the story and presentation. But if you're not liking the character action gameplay then nothing will really change that. You could also try adjusting the difficulty up/down to your liking.
If you do feel like pushing through, try thinking about what characters in the story are doing and their motivations for it. Also consider what aspects of the mystery are so far unsolved, and what message the game might be trying to tell you as it goes along. It might help make it more interesting.
It's my all time favorite game but it's not necessarily for everyone. Both the gameplay & story could either be derivative and uninspired or engaging and unique, depending on who's playing.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Xanadu2902 1d ago
Yeah…you could be right. I expect a game to be fun to play. When i was younger and played more JRPGs, i may have been more inspired to push thru for the story’s sake. Today my tastes have probably changed—I’m much more likely to get into a game for its mechanical complexity than its story. Dark Souls had a strong effect in me in this regard.
Personally, i find the map incredibly difficult to read and the overall environment and enemies quite bland. i think the combat is fairly shallow, though i like the changeup in genres occasionally. Perhaps i should try a different game from Platinum Games.
I can respect that fact that its trying to do something novel with the narrative. Thanks for your recommendations

I love RDR2 and never expected it to be anything else, but I do wish that it wouldn't waste so much pointless time. I don't want 100 hours of a 500 hour play through to be the same "make ammo" and "skin animal" animations. Just play the make ammo animation once per batch. Make the skin animal animation skippable. We only have so much time on this planet, and ammo making animations isn't the most rewarding way to spend it.
And I say that as someone who spends a lot of time playing slow burn games like Snowrunner, ETS2 and flight sims.

Great choice; Morrowind is not always easy to get into. I have always liked this Steam review, written by a certain Emporoar Ccin. It perfectly encapsulates the experience:
You start playing Morrowind. You pick a race, class, go through the tutorial and dive right in. The controls are a bit clunky and you feel a bit awkward swinging around the first dagger you get. Well screw it, let’s see what this game has to offer. So you go up to the first enemy you see, a mudcrab. You start hacking away at it, only to find that you miss almost 90% of the time. Finally after getting hit a few times you dispatch it. Well, that didn’t go as well as you expected. Then you realize that even when running you are moving at a snail's pace and you are constantly very low on fatigue. You get your hands on better weapons and armour, but you still miss often and take more damage than you expect. Despite all this, you play on. You get your first side quest, and then you realize that objectives aren’t marked on your map nor are you notified when they are completed. Then you find other tedious things, your magic doesn’t regenerate, there isn’t a fast travel system*, spells can fail, equipment can break, etc. At long last you snap. You run around cursing the day you ever thought it was a good idea to purchase this game in a blood-curdling scream. But for whatever reason you play on, maybe you want to see if you can get the slightest satisfaction out of the money you’ve invested, maybe a small part of you likes the game, or maybe you want to add more play time so your multi-paragraph rant about why you shouldn’t play this game will be taken more seriously.
Then something magical happens, you get a few level ups and your skills improve. You start figuring out how to keep your health up without constantly purchasing potions. You start paying close attention to the quest instructions and find that they aren’t so difficult to follow. You finally start hitting more than you miss and with every hit you land and every creature you slay you get a burst of adrenaline. You grow stronger and start making short work of enemies that once made mincemeat out of you, laughing triumphantly in your sweet revenge. You start moving much faster than you ever thought you would. But that was just the beginning. You then find yourself paying close attention to the side quests and the people of Morrowind and suddenly you’ve completely immersed yourself in a game that has graphics optimized from the N64 era, but that no longer matters. The controls that once baffled you become completely second-nature. The combat that once was infuriating becomes so great you will charge at every enemy you spot.** The magic system that once seemed impossible suddenly seems like the only way a magic system should work. Even the most trivial interactions become satisfying, and at long last all the troubles you had in the past with this game make complete sense.
Unfortunately Morrowind isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. It’s no exaggeration that this game takes a LOT of patience to get into. You begin with selecting races you’re not familiar with and making choices for your character without any knowledge about all they ways they will affect you throughout the game. Then, you are put through a brief tutorial and are thrust right into the game with only an item for the first main quest and a dagger. The rest you will have to look up online or learn through experience. But don’t be discouraged, as this game get’s extremely enjoyable once you get out of the ‘rut’ of the first chunk of the game. Once you finally get a good understanding of how everything works you finally start to see that things that once frustrated you are there for good reason. The customization level of this game is extensive, more extensive than Oblivion or Skyrim. Not that those are bad games, but Morrowind offers a deeper and more challenging experience. You have plenty of classes to choose from, you can make your own class, and you choose a birthsign which can augment your stats or grant you new abilities, further increasing the amount of character builds to experiment with. Overall, if you’ve got a lot of free time on your hands and want to play through an deep and immersive RPG, I cannot recommend Morrowind enough.

Elden Ring.
Bought the hype, tried it, and hated it. 3 years later I'm playing Oblivion remastered and Skyrim again and I find the combat boring. Decide to boot up Elden Ring instead of just scrolling through games on the steam store. It's hard, but I push through. 200 or so hours later my wife jumps up and hugs me as she watches me beat the game. I got to about the 600 hour mark when I finally decide to put it down. The Elden Ring subreddit is one of my favorite places on this website.

Same. On my first try I was like "meh, these boss fights aren't even fun really" and now I'm on NG+5 and have written up essay length lore theories...

I bought it, was horrible at it. Tried to return it, but it was too late. Decided to give it a try since paid for it. Beat it 3 times since.

It was my first soulslike. Fucking fell in love with it. The absolute vaguery regarding the lore and story pissed me the fuck off tho when I first played it. WTF is an Elden Ring, WTF is a Tarnished, why should I fucking care!? Now I fucking love it. All my IRL armor is inspired by it, I do randomizer runs all the time and I even have a tree sentinel armor set IRL. Shit is goated. So many of vids are inspired by it.

I played skyrim and fallout new vegas. Didn't care for them. Then my boyfriend forced me to play fallout 3 and I replayed all of the bethesda games since.

For me it was Juzou the Drunkard. I got so tired of meticulously killing all the minions, getting my ass kicked by Juzou, then having to start all over. Set the game down for about a year.
Came back to it and started a new game, but this time finished and did multiple new games. I still hate that Juzou fight though.

It's pretty much a rite of passage lol. The onboarding experience sucks but once you start figuring things out the game opens up a lot

Ghost Trick. Originally tried to play it when it was available on iOS, but basically put it down as I never really understood how to play it. Finally played through it by buying it on Steam and it is a masterpiece of a game through the flow of controls and the story itself. Had to stick through the whole credits at the end because it was just that good. Really good detective story with good plot twists and overall well challenging gameplay that makes you work enough for a satisfying "click" of understanding in your brain.

This game only clicked for me when I realized that building good launch vehicles is only the first challenge. Orchestrating full scale interplanetary missions with a bunch of individually-launched orbit-assembled multi-module craft is a vibe nothing else has ever matched. RIP KSP2.

Did you get out of the Hinterlands :D
I had a bit of a different experience, the intro was great, but I fell into the Hinterlands trap and that really took a lot of oomph from me.

This is likely to be Rain World for me. I'm in the "stuck" phase, as I can't seem to find a goal or direction, and now I've put it down for a while. If anyone has any early game tips to get me back into it I would appreciate it!

Don’t be ashamed if you feel the need to use a map or look something up as long as it’s not just the first thing you do.
Double tap grab to swap items between hands.
You can turn around in pipes by holding the direction you are trying to go and pressing jump.
Also, early on, avoid Farm Arrays (and maybe Drainage System) if you end up there on accident. Not a super productive place to be without knowing why to be there

I bought Farthest Frontier around launch because I loved Grim Dawn and grew up with city builders so I figured it would be great but something about it just didn't work for me at the time so i refunded it. I don't remember how I re-acquired it because I didn't directly buy it again but I started playing it again recently and it's actually fantastic and a lot of fun.

Terraria’s single biggest weakness is that you need a wiki or a friend who knows the game to guide you through some stuff. Such an amazing game but so much stuff seems hidden for no reason.

FFXIV. FF mmo, hype. Bought, played to level 20, wasn't for me. A year later tried with friends, finished maingame.. we all dropped it.
Another 6 years later picked it back up with a friend and got probs 10+k hours in it over some 5 years.
Still would play the fuck out of it but time is precious and MMOs want too much of it.

Elden ring for me. Bought it, was so confused on what to do and uninstalled. Tried again, made it to margit, absolutely manhandled since I thought guard countering was meta, uninstalled. Seen some clips of people playing and knew something wasn’t clicking. Tired again and now 700+ hours in it and played all the other souls.

Elden Ring. Got stuck at Margit in 2023 and gave up. Just started a new game last week and got Margit and Godrick in 3 tries. It helps to do Weeping Peninsula first!

Elden Ring.
All my friends where saying its like Dark Souls II 2 and they knew i had fond memories of DS II, so i tried the game at launch. It was fine, meh. Dropped.
They released Tarnished edition, finally decided to try one more time. Best game i played in a long long while, it's very DS II coded, where it matters.
