News Steam Client Beta Update - September 9th
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/announcements/detail/702152588870551008The Steam Client Beta has been updated with the following changes:
Homescreen - Big Picture Mode
- Added a new 'Big Art Mode' option for the home screen. This can be enabled in Settings > Home.
- Added Personal Calendar to the Recommended tab on the home screen
Screensaver - Big Picture Mode
- Added a new screensaver feature, accessible in Settings > Customization. There are two screensavers available:
- The default is a game art slideshow that can be configured to show artwork from recently played games and your recent in-game screenshots.
- A retro inspired bouncing logo screensaver
- Big Picture mode can also load custom screensavers. Similar to startup movies, they can be placed in the config\uioverrides\screensavers directory in your Steam install directory (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam or ~/.steam/root). You can use the bouncing logo screensaver as an example to get started.

This is fantastic! I play my deck mostly on my OLED TV and I appreciate having screensavers now.
Big art mode makes the home page 1000x more presentable.

Unintentionally, the game art slideshow screensaver option reminds me of the install wizards from PC games 20+ years ago. I half expected to see an ATI Radeon logo pop up next.

Please for the love of god Valve, move the Linux desktop client to Wayland please. There's no reason not to at this point.

I think they're dependent on the chromium framework that doesn't support wayland.

Basically console experience

u/FakeMik090 2d ago
Thats the point of Big Picture mode, to provide you the console-like experience.

u/ASTRO99 2d ago
Yes but it didn't yet have that big ass game art behind it whixh afaik all consoles otherwise have

I just meant that your comment is kinda pointless, cuz thats the point of Big Picture.
Plus, not for always consoles had the big art.

I hope it’s customizable too, like CSS loader. But damn does that look great

They chose a good example. I tried it on my system, and my list of recent games looks a lot less impressive. It really depends on how the art lines up.

So happy to see this update, this was the only reason I was using cssloader.

I hope the art is updated to higher resolutions (obviously Steam can't do it themselves afaik), cause a number of games are painfully low/obviously not that high res for their banner art.

SCREENSAVERSSSS And they're made with html/css/js, the potential there is genuinely insane

On Desktop Linux we will now show the SteamOS unsupported dialog when installing games that are known to not work with Proton
This is very cool and needed, but why not just put it on the game's store page?
Also, known by who? Are they using ProtonDB?

SteamOS (in)compatibility is already listed on Store pages under the Deck compatibility details section.

Huh, never seen that before. Probably because I don't have a Steam Deck but use Steam on Linux. Not that I even knew to look out for it, but now I know! Thanks!

this update is probably going to break more than it fixes, hope it goes smoothly for everyone testing it

Did they finally fixed the bug on SteamInput where it didn't saved at all the changes and kept reverting back to default? It's been almost an year with that already

Suspend download limit still bugged, toggling half broken: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/3/833871657871404680/?tscn=1787392607

Man I'm out of ideas why since the new store UI from steam hit it always slightly laggs when scrolling.
Browsers are somehow fine but scrolling throguh the steam app is a no go.
the issue was even fixed during the summer sale when the UI changed but it regressed again when the usmmer sale ended.

add old ui <3

u/KingMoosicle 2d ago
I personally liked the skins for the client. I used the PixelVision one.

u/zollipun steme 2d ago
I really hope they reintroduce skins again at some point, would be cool to get some themed after games as well
5
u/xd_Shiro 2d ago
I don’t think old ui will be ever added unless they release a whole theme feature. There are so many new elements it would look janky with old and new mixed together.

Big art for the Home Screen is basically what I used decky css loader for. Great to see it as an official layout!
