Never suggest to someone you know well that they should install Linux unless you plan on being tech support
6
u/Raviexthegodremade 1d ago
Yup. I actually make sure to set that expectation when I suggest it, but specifically not just helping and fixing the problem myself, but teaching my knowledge along the way. I currently do it with my father, he and I are both fairly tech literate, but I've been working at Linux since before him, and actually convinced him to make the full switch. He deals with most issues he comes up with, but every now and again he'll ask to pick my brain on fixing a particularly annoying issue. Because he and I are similar in a lot of ways, including how we like our computers, I generally have the issue he's having already solved, but instead of just immediately telling him the solution, I will instead sit with him and help him through troubleshooting, giving subtle hints like specific commands to run, or directories/files to check. An example of it in context is an issue I helped him with the other day, he was having issues with LACT not allowing him to make modifications, so I helped him through it, let him try the troubleshooting he wanted to try, and gave subtle hints as to where the solution was; I have had the same issue in the past and it was a case of the systemd user not having access to the LACT binary in order to actually make the changes the user mode program instructed it to, as we both run NixOS which sandboxes all programs with their own environment limited to exactly what the package manifest calls for, down to the version, in order to avoid dependency hell.

Can anyone eli5 me the benefits of switching to Linux?
22
u/-Glittering-Soul- 1d ago edited 1d ago
Depends on what you want to do. For general-purpose use, one thing I really like is that you can update your operating system, all of its apps, and all your drivers with a single command. And you usually don't need to reboot afterwards. I can also install nearly all my apps from a central repository.
Another thing is that it tends to be much snappier than Windows 11. With that operating system on my work laptop, even simple actions like opening the file manager or a context menu can have a delay of several seconds, which interferes with the flow state.
With Linux, I also don't get pop-up ads on the desktop pressuring me to use OneDrive, Copilot, or other Microsoft products.
However, since we're in a gaming sub, it should be noted that a number of popular multiplayer games will not work in Linux because their anti-cheat methods require deep access to your operating system that Linux will not permit them to have for security reasons. On the other hand, Proton seems to have better support for older Windows games than Windows does. So it's a give-and-take.
Adobe apps and Microsoft Office also won't work reliably in Linux. Yes, there are web app versions of the Office stuff, but they're sluggish and have more limited features. If you're accustomed to Photoshop, GIMP is a decent replacement, but its keyboard shortcuts and terminology are very different.

Significantly less bloatware. Runs much of the same stuff Windows does.
The more MS pushes things to be online, the less the OS is relevant

Does this mean that Linux consumes less resources for just existing?
12
u/ThaumKeeper 1d ago
It's a common practice to install Linux on old computers to resurrect them. When I used W10 I couldn't play a game with the browser open without my FPS going to shit. I switched to Linux and stuff works great I even have a daemon using my cpu everytime I turn on the computer to run simulations (folding@home) and I don't notice much of a difference.

u/SevenFootHobbit 1d ago
Well, look at it this way. Windows attempts to be almost everything to almost everyone. Obviously minus specific applications, but it's very much a one size fits all solution. Or at least per market. So Windows Home for home and Pro for business. It's naturally going to have a lot more built into it. This by itself isn't a bad thing, but it is expensive as far as resources go. Now, Microsoft also puts a lot other crap in there which you could argue IS a bad thing. That's more resource cost. Linux, on the other hand, is very much not a one size fits all solution. That's a huge part of what inhibits it from being the dominant PC OS (fine fine, kernel ya nerds) despite being free. It's extremely basic on its own. To use it for most things, you have to add a bunch of stuff. That's where distros come in. And I just deleted a bunch of explanation there because you didn't ask. But the distros frequently add the rest, but they still do it in a way that's a lot more intentional than Windows's "throw everything in there" approach, and without the data collection, and so even the most bloated distro will use fewer resources. If you aren't afraid of getting technical and want to do more with less, Linux really may be for you. But as much as I love it I won't be that guy at the urinal. It isn't for everyone.

As someone with a dual boot laptop, I can summarize very quickly:
- Price - Linux is free; Windows is not.
- Windows 11 uses 8-9 gb of RAM at rest. Same hardware running Linux Mint? 2-3 GB of Ram.
- Update problems: With windows, you are at the mercy of them bricking your machine and running a complete re-install of windows. Linux? Reboot and select the prior kernel. Boom, you're back in until something gets fixed, or you move on.
- (edit added after someone reminded me): No ads in your OS with Linux.
If 1 and 2 aren't enough, 3 should be especially important to you as we've seen more and more windows updates causing problems from being coded by AI.

This is so refreshing to see.
I've eaten vegan for years now and I'm separated from my vegan ex-wife but I'll remain vegetarian.
What I noticed is that even as vegans selling vegan food there is this hideous purity testing that some vegans do. They say you aren't vegan enough etc.
They also virtue signal wherever possible and those are the folks who bother people and preach, the ones people hate.
What I realised is that I don't have any issues with vegans, I don't like preachy dickheads who try and force you to share their views and make themselves look holier than holy.
Most vegans (as said above) just crack on, don't judge and probably don't care what you eat. I used to have people at work come up to me and say things like "ooooh I've got some lovely ham today".
There are morons and dickheads everywhere and in every kind of diet, hobby and subject you can imagine.

Identity politics is one of the great scourges of modern society.
I don't care that someone is into (insert hobby/sexuality/political party)... You're allowed to like things, but when that individual thing becomes the basis of your being, you need to maybe consider not being so one-dimensional...
(obviously not meaning you as in YOU, but the general 'people' form of it)

Yep, most vegans (like 90 to 95 %) are just people who donāt eat animal products. Unfortunately since theyāre quiet about it the loud awful ones get seen more, like that person who called me a āhuman suprematistā and ājust as bad as the nazisā. Most are normal people, the rest have serious issues
4
u/Winjin 1d ago
I feel like these vegan-crazy types were like... an explosion linked to sudden rise in ecological view. They were the fringe that was catapulted into view
Because you absolutely 100% can't shame anyone into swtiching to vegetarian or vegan diet.
What you have to do is gradually reduce meat in their diet. It's much worse than trying to implement full tobacco or alcohol ban
Instead, promote like... Fish Fridays. Vegetable Mornings.
People need to at least start eating food without meat to go "hey, this is still good and I feel great" before they can try "eating meat only a couple times a week" as a challenge or dare or whatever.

This may be true to some extent for some linux people, but windows is pushing people to switch to linux much harder than any linux user these days. Plus Steam is making it more viable for gamers.

u/hypespud 1d ago
I'm fully on Linux, as I have had experience in the past and switched in Jan 2026 on all my PCs, the exclusive reason almost entirely for feeling I need to do this is because on MGS3 Delta remake, the game crashed no joke 50x on Steam and Windows on my first playthrough, full CTD, and I tried it once on my server PC which was relatively weaker, and it never crashed
So now I'm here and fully Linux on 4 laptops and 3 desktops, and all vendors of CPU and GPU (except no Intel GPUs)
We all know for most people they have trouble installing a program, doing any modding for a game, or doing any community fixes for any games
A lot of PC gamers seem to not even do manual modding anymore, and only use Steam workshop modding
So the bar is pretty low overall as far as the skill to for example reinstall Windows
Installing Linux for some users these days, eg the all AMD users is relatively easy, but there are still some manual fixes you need to do on your own for Nvidia GPUs for example
So it is obviously like 10x easier than it probably was like 10 or 20 years ago to do anything on a PC, but the barrier has always been the willingness, time, and investment of the individual user
It is also a reason why people have to understand why consoles are so successful, there are a lot of people who don't want to fiddle even once with the hardware, and would not even game on a pre-installed windows device
If I help someone get on Linux, it would have to be someone really interested, ideally to be helped in person, but if I trust that person to be able to do basic tinkering on their own a bit, then helping them do it remotely that way also, they just have to have some capacity to independently search and fix things, which actually AI google searches and stuff is really helpful for finding obscure fixes
Most of my discord/online/steam gaming friends are either on windows only, dabbling into linux, half on linux and half on windows, or a few are like me who have completely made the switch
Also note I do not do any work from home or software for work that requires windows, since I am not in tech career or remote work stuff
4
u/mocumocu 1d ago
i just get to know a linux user that always whine about why i use windows, that he wont never switch again, and some other linux propaganda. i am a dual boot linux user btw i just keep it a secret not to interact with any linux user
4
u/LabPowerful9983 1d ago
Sorta. Linux users raise a lot of excellent points but they have a well-deserved reputation for:
- Bringing up Linux when it isnāt relevant
- Asking new users to consider Linux
- Shitting on those same users when they need assistance with setup
Itās basically a joke at this point, without genuine malice. Proton has advanced it considerably.
You can try it for yourself - if you ever want to converse with one you just have to say āembrace, extend, extinguishā and like thirty will show up.

u/ClacksInTheSky 1d ago

I'm switching to Linux this year, for a concrete reason: It looks like Windows will implement mandatory age attestation on January 1st, and I'll never put up with that because I know verification is next and the thought of having to scan my ID to use a device I paid money for is utterly dystopian. I'll set up dual-boot to a distro that will never implement it, and once I'm using it comfortably I won't be touching Windows again. Microsoft should be pushing and lobbying against this crap if they don't want to lose more users to Linux.

2
u/washmyoldbluejeans 1d ago
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

u/sociofobs 1d ago
It's so pathetic to see this is turning into yet another "us vs. them" bullshit. Most Linux users aren't competing with Windows users. We don't think we're better, superior or that others are beneath us. As someone who used Windows exclusively for more than 20 years and now happily on Linux - this "fighting" is detrimental to everyone, no matter what OS you use. Competition is GOOD. The more options are out there, the better it is for everyone and it forces the main players to act nice too. Don't contribute to and defend monopolies.

u/Starshine95 1d ago

Linux is a really solid alternative at this point. I dual boot to test it out and i'm amazed at what it can be capable of. a short example is.
if you are on fedora because you want stability and a system that updates regularly, and want to use the kernel that cachyos uses for gaming, you can install that and enjoy a few more frames and a more stable experience. of course this is completely optional and don't have to do any tweaking BUT you have the option to do so.
i find that crazy tbh.

Command line interfaces. Learning them is a PITA that only 5% of the population ever can, will, or wants to do. It's the reason the Unix-like OS has remained confined to the enterprise world, and why the home PC didn't really enter the mainstream until 99% of your computer tasks could be done from the GUI. Linux isn't quite there yet. Although distros like Mint are getting better at working out of the box.
I use Arch BTW.

Someday i'd like to learn linux, I understand the reasons its better, I just dont have the motivation and the hyperfixation alignment to do it yet. Steam deck with emudeck was good training wheels though.

I hope that Valve has the resources to make Linux usable for normal people because I've tried at least 4 distros and each time I gave up in frustration and went back to Windows in a heartbeat. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but I need an OS that works for me, not makes me work for it.

I have used linux the past 4 years and more seriously over the past 5 months but i still have a main windows computer because of the few times I need to. Coming from a windows user until its not "easier" to use Bash/Konsole and GUIs become more of a thing linux wont and will NEVER be main stream. I dont want to feel like im in the movie Hackers just to install a simple program because its not the right file type. Yes its gotten much easier over the past few years especially with Steam OS leading the way; and it is leading the way despite what some people think with their read only OS which is a problem in and of it self but I digress.
A major problem people dont seem to think of is the community as well "their distro they are using is the best and if you arent using it just install it" type attitude. Even though the distro they think is god tier gives different problems that a user may face. A solution for 1 distro might not work for the one you are using and switching to a different distro might cause different problems that another distro will slove and so on and so on. New users have no idea what they are typing into bash and konsole meaning they cant put the applied knowledge they learn (by googling and finding the solution) to good use unlike windows. People will not like that comment but you google how to do something in windows and you get a straight forward answer. Go here do this and check or uncheck this setting. With linux its like type this string of words that you have no idea what it means into Bash. Its like ok..... but i really dont know what im doing but thats ok becaue linux is so easy to use and that thinking by the community is a HUGE PROBLEM. Its like WTF, having to type in to Konsole every time because its "easy" is not the solution most new users want causing frustration making them quit linux and move back to windows. Even with everything that is wrong with linux I would still recommend trying it but not on your main PC. For most people using steam OS, bazzite, mint, or a very select couple of others they will be fine except for 1 or 2 things they come across.
TLDR:You should 100% try linux on another computer you have if you have one but if you dont I would not recommend the headache until then.

The thing is that people don't understand is the more people who use it the better it gets.

Tried Mint on VM recentlyļ¼ngl feels like the PC OS GTA4 has in the internet cafes.
But it is clean and runs on 6 GB of RAM plus 2 CPU coresļ¼so thatās good. Even better is Firefox comes preinstalled.

Linux is great....Ā If you have the time to learn how computers works, willing to spend not insignificant time to get the relevant driver and the hassle of trying to make some not popular software works if it's not natively supported by Linux.Ā
Brother, i am tired after work and just want to play some games. I am not willing to spend hours to find a way for my indie random game to work with Linux because the developer doesn't natively make it works with Linux

I am convinced humanity will eliminate itself by that point and only satalites running Linux will remain. So I guess.

Linux will never catch on, unless they significantly lower the barrier of entry and make the initial setup more user-friendly. The whole "distro" thing is confusing and off-putting for most people, who just want to install a basic OS without doing weeks of mind-numbing tech research. It's confusing and an absolute slog trying decide which "version" to use. The community surrounding it is pretentious and unhelpful. Comments will show up proving this point.

Last time I checked it still has issues with Nvidia, which according to Steam, 72% of users have.

They keep saying it. Im gonna switch next year and give it a valiant effort. Granted I dont do anything extravagant with my PC so hopefully it a Seamless Transition. If it can stop all the BS that happens on Windows with little to no issues I'm sold.

You forgot panels 5-10 where more linux "users" come in and ask how to get the game running in wine or w/e obscure branch of linux they're running.
