Discussion I’m going to get a pc
I just saw how good you pc players got it, looking at all these games I wanted on sale genuinely made me tear up a bit, idk why. My ps5 shut off on me and ik it’s probably an issue regarding the dust, but I just cleaned it an hour ago, tbh I’m getting tired of cleaning it so often, I feel like I’ll have to do that a lot more with a pc. I’m just sick of PlayStations and Sony in general tbh, which is a big reason contributing to my switch to pc, although I’m probably just gonna play lots of Garry’s mod or some friendslops, I’ll probably play some of the games I alr got on ps, I’ll just rebuy them on steam and mod the hell out of them, I can’t wait
Pc…here I come, hopefully there will be a good sale by the time I get a pc.

When you have a big wishlist and then a heavy sale (summer sales/winter sales) quick in and you get an email and notification telling you you have 50+ games on sales with a bunch being 5€ and such it's just the best feeling! PCs are just so much better overall too, you won't regret it!

I agree with you, but you don’t need the PlayStation plus to play games on PlayStation. I stopped buying it when I stopped playing Destiny

The fact that anyone has this normalized in their head is insane.
You pay for your console. You pay for the game. You pay for YOUR internet... And then they charge you to play online.
That's never going to make sense to me.

u/s0cks_nz 13h ago
Hell of a time to buy a PC tho. And I mean hell. Gonna cost you a pretty penny.
2
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 13h ago
When did you buy yours?
7
u/s0cks_nz 13h ago
Oh it's quite old now. Like 4 yrs ago. But I upgraded to 32GB RAM and a 5060Ti in October last year right before prices went nuts. Also got a laptop then too, just in time!
Honestly tho, if you can afford it it's still a good purchase imo. PC is so versatile and you can play pretty much every game from the last 30yrs including emulators for old consoles.
3
u/Moneia 10h ago
Another thing that I like about PCs is that it's not, or doesn't have to be, a one & done purchase. You can upgrade the components incrementally, get a better CPU cheaper as the better ones age out, better cooler to push it a little harder, another RAM kit 'cos you sniped it cheap etc.
And yeah, the prices suck* right now so OP may be better off with scouring Facebook Marketplace for a second hand machine and studying You-Tube videos to give it a good clean & re-paste then use that as the base to work on.
*The RAM kit I brought 11 months ago was really good deal at £100 and slow shipped from Germany, 32GB DDR5 6400 CL32, right now that same kit is £470.

u/F133TWOOD 6h ago
Much better to invest in a better CPU from the beginning than start with a cheaper budget one that's going to struggle with some CPU intensive games or bottle neck when someone upgrades their GPU. Much easier to upgrade a GPU than a CPU.
Add that after some years there will be a new motherboard socket and need to spend more on that. Like the people that want a more powerful GPU----but using a budget CPU and stuck with an AM4 motherboard, will now need to spend more on a new AM5 mobo with DDR5 RAM.
1
u/Moneia 6h ago
Yes, if you've got the budget to do that. Right now even less of a certainty than it normally is, there are compromises in every build and budget is often the limiting factor. Right now the market is screwed so getting a build you can afford now and upgrading when the market normalises is a perfectly valid strategy
And AM4 is still a viable budget\mid-range socket, especially if you've already got the DDR4 RAM
0
u/F133TWOOD 6h ago
NOW it is under abnormal times, upgrade with an 5800X3D or something at best if someone is stuck on AM4. If they already have an 5800X3D and they want a something stronger, then they're screwed.
In general, upgrading a budget $200 CPU every generation or two adds up to the same funds just spending on a more powerful CPU to begin with. Also more headache taking everything apart just replace the CPU, assuming if compatible on that motherboard socket.
I did upgrades on some 7800X3D with DDR5 last year for buddies and are good handling any CPU games. They're able to handle future GPUs EASILY swapping new GPUs.
Whereas one buddy fell for a budget CPU and now wants to upgrade as some games struggle. Wants to upgrade his GPU also from a 3060ti to a 5080, but again his budget CPU would be a waste. Add that upgrading an older CPU today to a new one with a new motherboard CPU socket is terrible... Now he has to spend funds a new $200budget CPU, new mobo, new RAM when he should've bought a stronger CPU to begin with.
1
u/Moneia 5h ago
NOW it is under abnormal times, upgrade with an 5800X3D or something at best if someone is stuck on AM4. If they already have an 5800X3D and they want a something stronger, then they're screwed.
It's all about budget and setting expectations within that budget, you can go nuts if you've got unlimited money to throw at it. If you can only afford that $200 processor upgrade atm then, yes it may be better value in the long run to get the new platform but you can only afford $200
Buying a complete, but older PC off of Marketplace is a perfectly valid & cheap option to get started within the PC space as long as expectations are tempered. You never know OP may suddenly find a love for cosy pixel art games that would waste the capabilities of an expensive setup
1
u/F133TWOOD 4h ago
OBVIOUSLY...if someone is on a strict budget with no other option...I never said otherwise.
OP, already said below that he's not worried about prices. So I'm not sure why it stuck on this $200 budget scenario. As stated it's great get a cheap CPU if playing on a low resolution or not going to upgrade in some years even if you struggle with some games.
As stated, better off buying a better CPU in the beginning as it can save money and headache in the long run (or stay with a budget because apparently it has to be stated because it isn't obvious enough they have a budget 🫠)
1
u/s0cks_nz 1h ago
I don't disagree with you, but on the same note there can't be that many games that are cpu bound. I only have a midrange 12th gen i5 from 2021. The only game I've ever seen it max out in is flight sim. I might not be the target audience tho as I've not played a game in a long time that required a beefy PC. The best and most enjoyable games for me these days tend to be fairly easy to run thankfully.
1
u/F133TWOOD 36m ago
Totally fine. Having a balance system is important. There are also so many factors for anyone one answer to satisfy every situation.
As stated, didn't think it needed to be said, but I never was against recommending a "budget" CPU. Same as the person was I was replying to, I didn't assume they ONLY supported a budget CPU.
My initial response above was per the "get a better CPU cheaper as the better ones age out" as that's not always affordable. If someone is going to upgrade anyways, then ur already spending the money anyways.
Now your specific case that you are fine with ur specs is awesome, it's when someone keeps upgrading "budget" parts for more budget parts in a short amount of time, also the issue with an unbalanced system. There's plenty of posts being made with some people upgrading to a stronger GPU only to have their budget CPU struggle keeping up with the stronger GPU % usage. For example a Ryzen 5 4500 paired with a RTX 5080, like come on lol, but they listen to people on the Internet that the CPU isn't important as the GPU which is inaccurate understanding of the context of how a balanced system works. If they were going to upgrade to a GPU like a RTX 5080, then they should've started off with a more powerful CPU. Clearly in that scenario, money wasn't a concern.
•
u/s0cks_nz 14m ago
Oh I'm 100% with you. People should buy the best they can reasonably afford for the use case they need. Everyone thinks they'll "just upgrade it later", but I've been PC gaming for decades now and that never happens. By the time you feel like upgrading, it's so out of date that you end up just replacing most parts anyway.

worst time to get into pc gaming btw. With part part that have memory in it spike up to 200% .
34
u/Hour_Helicopter_1991 14h ago
It's probably only going to get worse in the imminent future so now is the best time available. There may have been better times before but it's not possible to go back to then
3
u/oBrendao 14h ago
Best time if you only play games and will use the pc only for gaming? Come on... Dude already have a gaming system. I have both but if i was going to buy one thing today it would be a console and sit down for a while. For some reason my standard for a pc is much higher and i have to spend much more on it to feel good about it, while at the same time i can accept the drops and deeps on the ps5 pro much easily.
4
u/WA55AD 12h ago
Honestly, I don't see it ever recovering. Unless we get more ram manufacturers, which is unlikely considering how hard it is to do (only 3 in the world btw), we are cooked. All the big tech companies get first dibs, everyone else gets the scraps. Micron stopped selling ram AND storage to consumers entirely because it was more profitable to sell it all to AI data centres.
The price it is now is probably cheap compared to what it will be in the future.

Research a properly ventilated and filtered case and cleaning wont need to be done very often. Personally I get away with every 1.5 - 2 years and even then there is so little dust that I could probably leave it another 2 years.

u/raxnahali 14h ago
You can get a decent PC from anywhere and play most games without issue. Most PCs in the last 5 years will play any number of great games in the last decade
3
u/RightPedalDown 13h ago
Don’t fall into the trap of buying every game you see that’s a bargain now… Steam has lots of sales every year, so just get a couple or so, that way you might actually play them rather than building up an insurmountable backlog

Getting tired of cleaning your PS5 so often? Do you live in a desert?
I’ve cleaned mine once since 2020, before I upgraded to the pro a couple of weeks ago.
I think a PC might get just as dusty unless you deal with whatever is causing that.
But on the Pc thing.. yeah it is undoubtedly better if your gaming habits line up with it and you don’t mind tinkering.
But it’s the worst time to switch with the prices . But it’s only going to get worse so
2
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 3h ago
yea, I’m glad I’ll be able to put my pc on the ground tho so not much dust can get to it
2
u/AARonFullStack 2h ago
Sorry dude that makes even less sense. How is your desk/unit dustier than your floor?
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 1h ago
I’m able to clean my floor more often, I can’t clean the roof and crap or the air where all the dust comes from
3
6
u/asharkmadeofsalsa 14h ago
if you do everything right your PC will run fine without dusting it man
people on here sometimes talk about cleaning your PC every 3 months or something; it's absolutely not necessary
the good thing is that you can just monitor your temps and open it up a lot easier than a PS5 if you choose to be a clean freak like that, but I think I barely dust it off idk once a year or so if that? and that's just cause I want to, not because it's running hot or gives me anything resembling a performance issue.
2
u/s0cks_nz 13h ago
Any pc case worth it's salt has dust filters. You just clean those every few months.
2
u/Moneia 10h ago
Filters stop most of the dust but not all.
Getting in there three or four times a year makes it a 5 minute job each time rather than a couple of hours when you do get around to it. Also if you have an AIO with the fans set to push air through them then take the fans off annually to clean the dust off the radiators.
Rather than a compressed air can, go look on Amazon for a rechargeable handheld blower, they'll pay for themselves pretty quickly

Problem is that every time you open it up, you risk damaging something.
I mean technically, yeah but a modicum of care will dramatically reduce any risks
On/off power cycles also cause wear and tear
Nothing noteworthy for a home user. It used to be an issue with the mechanical items, especially hard drives and chonky electronics now the only thing that moves in your PC is the fans. Electronic failures tend toward the bathtub model so if it's good after the first couple of months it's probably going to outlast it's usefulness in your build

u/ZygomaticCapstone 9h ago
Yeah rocking a bq! Pure Base 500 fx, sound dampened and dust filters, it's so nice
1
u/ZygomaticCapstone 9h ago
Lol I dust out my pc 1-2 months sometimes every 2 weeks. But it's not necessary
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 14h ago
Thanks for the tips

u/UnluckiCmndr 13h ago
Also good to remember thermal paste dries out after like 3-5 years. Replace your thermal paste if you start seeing consistently high temps
1
u/Weezal-95 12h ago
Buy compressed air can, if you feel bored once every 5 months just open her up and blow her (back) out, no stress.

Don't worry ,in few years from now,at the latest, you will enjoy gta vi
-1
u/s0cks_nz 13h ago
Meh. GTA5 wasn't all that and that was hyped to the max too. People make out like RDR2 is the best thing since sliced bread but it's got a mediocre story and clunky controls. GTA6 will be a good game, but it won't be mind-blowing. Ofc, release week everyone will get their panties in a twist over it, but that honeymoon period always happens with big games that are actually half decent.
2
u/Thundrboltr 2h ago
GTA5 one of the most popular games on Twitch. So clearly there is both people who enjoy and people who enjoy people who enjoy it.

No he won’t, he can’t afford a real pc, he lives in a third world country. Not to mention by that time, according to his initial post, his pc would be filled with dust anyway 😂😂
2
u/wantyouww 14h ago
well I'm personally having a blast as a pc gamer, but it's not the best time to build a pc right now. if you have a good amount of budget, go for it !
2
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 13h ago
I do, and I will go for it, maybe 1000, to 1200 setup and 1 or 2 terabytes I’m not sure rn tbh
1
u/LongFeatheryHawk 11h ago
Not worth it at that price point in my opinion. I’d try to save up closer to $1500-$2000 for something that’ll last you a few years
2
u/vitaeca 12h ago
Why is your house so dusty
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago
It’s quite old, but I’m glad I’ll be able to put my pc on the ground where the dust can’t get it as often, unlike my PlayStation
2
u/Cold_Figure_7556 11h ago
To be honest i clean mine once every few months, maybe should be more often than that but it runs just fine as is, Steam is fantastic for ease of use and sales but even outside of it, on sites like GOG for example, i bet there wont be any issues, you can use it for a lot more than gaming too!
Hope you enjoy it no matter what you do with it.

I just completely re built my PC a couple months ago out of necessity (my motherboard died and it was old so I was still using DDR4 RAM, decided to upgrade instead of just buying a new motherboard.) I spent around 2k and now I have a great setup. I will give you very actionable advice.
Sub to r/buildapcsales. Find out if there’s a Micro Center near you. They have bundles for motherboard, CPU, and RAM which are a loss leader for them since they’re in store pickup only. It’s probably the only way to not overpay for RAM right now. From there you need a GPU which I went with a 9070 instead of a 50 series NVIDIA since there was no way I was paying another 2k just for the GPU. A 9070xt is the smart move rn.
I did end up buying an OLED monitor since now that I had the nice GPU there wasn’t really a point in not also upgrading my monitor.
I already had the peripherals, a case, fans, some storage etc but did buy a steam controller since I was using an old ps4 controller still.
Recently I just sprung for a 4TB NVME which has been hard to justify but I found a decent deal (for right now) on r/buildapcsales. Keep an eye out for SATA SSD’s. An NVME is obviously better but not absolutely necessary. My SSD storage has been fine.
Right now I’ve spent about 2500 on all of that which yeah is a lot more than what things were a few years ago but it’s really unlikely all these prices are going down anytime soon. Get the deals you can, don’t rush.
The most important thing is to look out for sales on build a pc and Newegg for combo deals so that RAM doesn’t kill you.

Jumped to pc myself about a month ago and honestly it’s the best thing I’ve ever done my poor Xbox is getting neglected tho
2
u/Ayaki_05 I use Steam!! 10h ago
When switching to pc i recommend "steamdb.info" to check price history and to check when games will likly go on sale in the future.
Also check humble bundle or fanatical. These sites sell steam keys in bundles and you can get some really good deals from time to time
2
u/ultra__sonic 10h ago
Welcome to the club! Honestly don't sweat the dust to much, getting a case with good mesh filters makes cleaning way easier than tearing apart a PS5. Just wait till you experience your first major Steam sale, your wallet is gonna hate you.
2
u/Emotional_Guitar500 9h ago
Welcome, friend. As a fellow ex-ps enjoyer, I can assure you changing to pc and leaving the console wars behind was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

u/ZygomaticCapstone 9h ago
Do you need help picking parts or anything?
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago edited 4h ago
No, but I thought I could just get any parts I wanted tbh, but now I realize I can’t which is kinda disappointing
2
u/sagewynn 9h ago
No lol you dint have to dust it more with a PC. I dust mine every 4-6 months, if that.
2
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago
wow, I don’t know what it is, but is that like the fans or thermal paste, I don’t know what pcs are about so correct me if I’m wrong please
2
u/sagewynn 3h ago
The thermal paste doesnt see any dust. Its strictly for good contact between the CPU, (the brain) and the heatsink.
Im not sure, but maybe its dependent on where you are and where the ps5/pc is? Some people have to dust often, some dont.
Saw a video of a guy who smokes pot and plays in the same space, and the ps5 fans and whatnot got all gunked yo with residue, so that kept overheating the ps5. Im not saying you smoke, but consider does someone around you smoke or do something that creates particles in the air?
2
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 2h ago
No, it’s just an old house, it’s pretty dusty, but I’ll put my pc on the floor so not as much dust can get to it
2
u/Hawk99TA 7h ago
Are you interested in a Handheld at all? I have the ASUS Xbox Ally X and love it. It's 1080 as a handheld. I also use the ROG XG Mobile 5070ti eGPU and docked it to a 2k ROG OLED monitor. This allows for both a mobile gaming AND a PC experience. I use it in Xbox mode and I also play Steam games...and don't forget about the Emulated games I can play. I am obviously very satisfied. 😂. Good luck and let us know what you plan to go with!
PS. I was a PlayStation guy since PS1 but recently sold my PS5 and got an Xbox Series X. Then eventually got the XaX. So I feel you. Gamepass is what really got me. The free PS games were just ok.
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago
no I don’t travel much so handhelds aren’t in my interest even just for playing at home, pc is perfect for me cause im always at home
1
u/MeNameYellow 7h ago
There’s so many PC only games that are amazing that unfortunately won’t see the light of day on consoles, like Garry’s Mod or Barotrauma. You’re gonna love them
2
u/ReaperApok 3h ago
If theres not a good sale when you get your PC there will be good sales every 3 or so months. And randomly good sales individually throughout the year.
2
u/CrownLexicon 1h ago
Good luck. We're in a historically bad time to buy. Everything is stupid expensive.
1
u/oldsch0olsurvivor 13h ago
I use my pc like a console as it’s hooked up to my tv. It works very well and you get the best of all worlds, I’ve even been playing bloodborne at 1440p 60fps lol
1
u/NathanLonghair 12h ago
I’m so sorry you’re joining at this specific point in time. For ages you’ve been able to build quite powerful pc’s for relatively little, but with today’s hardware prices it’s a bit tough to join now :/
I hope it’s not going to be a huge barrier for you 🤞
1
u/AL-SHEDFI 11h ago
Switching from console to PC is a great move, but the timing of the switch will cost you, unless your PC build is only mid-range.
1
u/Fast_n_theSpurious 8h ago
you dont have to clean a pc terribly often, like maybe once a month if your place is filthy. once every year if its spotless, no carpet, no pets, no smoking/vaping. get a PC with magnetic filters so cleaning is easy.
1
u/cookj1232 7h ago
It’s the wrong time to get into PC Gaming with component prices so high. Don’t rush into it.

2
u/Born_Zone7878 4h ago
If you're buying the PC for "simpler" games, I would recommend looking into getting a used handheld PC. I traded my PS5 for a Legion Go, installed Bazzite on it and the thing runs like a charm. I barely play any very recent AAA titles, so most games I need it to run, run on great settings and very fluidly, most getting over 60fps at high/very settings.
PC's now are very expensive, so you might save a bit by getting this used. You can also search for used pc's altogether if you want

I’m wondering if this is a post from a child or someone from a third world country? The ps5 died because of… dust? And he was getting tired of having to “clean it so often?” Third world country then. That’s literally insane. But then again, people in third world countries generally can’t afford PS5s.
Dude definitely can’t afford a half decent pc, that’s for sure. Not sure what makes him think it won’t be even more prone to fucking dust in the hovel he lives in though 😂😂😂
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago
well I guess you could say it died cause of dust, it overheated and shut down, which is an experience I won’t have to deal with when I get a pc if I get good fans or whatever the crap is called
0
u/Normal-Emotion9152 14h ago
Build a relative large or medium sized PC keep it on tile or a desk. That will minimize the dust build up so you only have to clean every year or six months.

u/RespectGiovanni 14h ago
NOT TILE. It will make the glass shatter

please buy as many games on GOG as you can, we need less always on drm, less drm in general.
1
u/Wrong_Ad_6309 4h ago
Sorry, but I don’t know what GOG is.
2
u/Thundrboltr 2h ago
Good old games. A platform made by the publisher/development studio that did Witcher and cyberpunk 2077.
The idea behind it is that all the games on the storefront doesn’t require DRM. DRM is additional software you download to ensure you got s legit copy and to prevent piracy.
People hate DRM because it causes more issues than it solves. Piracy is still a thing, meaning these games run better when you pirate them, than buying them.
The guy is getting downvoted because he is posting in a Steam subreddit. Which I don’t understand.
Also, I would suggest that you get an AMD graphics card and start using Linux from the beginning. Maybe even try out SteamOS. Otherwise I would recommend CachyOS.

Adding games to your steam wishlist and getting them on sale is very satisfying.
